I use a pair of vise grips for the pins because sometimes the pins shoot off if you don't grip it right with regular pliers.

After you raised the ‘shanks’ to smooth out what you roughed up, did you change the top link length for a different blade angle?

I think you need to add some weight to the box to push it down
