Being a good running coach is both an art and a science. The most fundamental element of coaching though, is always going to be communication. In today's video we'll dive into why good communication is so important!

As a running coach myself, I value good communication. Without it, we're just computers creating training plans without the human factor. There's lots of generic plans out there and they can definitely work quite well, but nothing beats having a coach customize the training plan just for you!
Whether you're training for a 5K or a marathon - the plan needs to be optimized to fit YOU, rather than the other way around. This is where the coach comes in.
As coaches we need to listen to our athletes, and give them space to express themselves. We need to remember that we're dealing with human beings and that there's more to training than just physics!
We also need information in order to create optimal training plans and workouts. Information like how they felt during a workout, afterwards and in general. Information like if there's any aches or pains anywhere. Information like whether they are enjoying the training or not. This and much more need to be gathered regularly in order to be a good coach. Communication therefore, is key.
With the VDOT O2 platform it's easy to communicate back and forth with athletes through comments and notes inside the actual training calendar. The system is built on legendary coach Jack Daniels PhD and his VDOT formula. I find that this is the easiest and most effective way to prescribe training for myself, my clients and just about anyone who wants to become a better distance runner!

Looking forward to the videoseries! Also, how is the ebook on running coming along, Mikkel? I am also looking forward to that one ;)

Thanks! The eBook is coming along, albeit rather slowly! It'll definitely be out this fall, but hopefully I can make it by the end of the summer/beginning of fall. Thanks for asking :)

Interesting video and as a fellow running coach I enjoyed listening to your philosophy. I agree that communication is so important! Curious if your coaching certification was through V.02 also? I'm RRCA certified but have thought about layering in that certification as well.

I have done the VDOT Coaching certification yes. I also have a Lydiard Foundation Certification - along with thousands of hours of private study of exercise physiology and running training of course. Are you using the VDOT O2 Coaching platform? If not, I definitely recommend checking it out!

I liked you video! Do you have any other video talking about quitting your normal job to become a running coach?

Thanks! No I don't. But I guess the tip I would give you is to start building your coaching business on the side and then once you start getting some traction, consider going to a part time position and spending more time on the coaching, and eventually transitioning over to coaching full time? Making RU-vid videos has been a good way for me to market my coaching, but I also got myself involved in the local running scene by coaching kids and offering group training sessions for parents and other adults in the area. Get yourself out there and let it be known that you offer coaching.
