I think it's a fear of being you're authentic self and then being criticized or rejected.

I also think we are too hard on ourselves. We tend to beat ourselves up way before anyone else shares an opinion. I've learned to not pay too much attention to that negative and fear filled voice in my mind, and that has done wonders to reduce my fear of public speaking

First off, thank you so much for doing these videos! Similarly, the more eyes I have on me, the higher the likelihood I "brain lock" and I hate it because I have really embarrassed myself before and felt very incompetant. To combat this issue, I focus in on one person in the audience and talk to them like we are having a conversation. Obviously, a weakness to this is you can get stuck with one person and make things awkward for them, but with practice, I have gotten myself to transition to new people in the audience to create a more organic and engaging presentation. With this method, I never feel like I am talking to a hundred people all at once, instead, I am just talking to one person at a time throughout the presentation. This is just what has worked for me though.

Very interesting and high praise for David. I am petrified of public speaking! And I know why.... Whenever I've had to do it I'd become hyper-conscious of everything going on with my body, especially my facial muscles, lips, and eyes...I would (and still do) quiver, lip tremble, and downcast eyes...a burning flushing on my cheeks and much difficulty breathing with lots of deep breaths to try to normalize...I can't control the pitch of my voice and if I'm holding something my hands shake involuntarily... Heart races and pounds hard and I get dizzy headed... It is absolutely positively brutal... I've bailed out of many college classes that required public speaking...I took very mundane, boring classes and managed to earn my English degree... But id rather do anything else in the world than speak publicly... I've lost job opportunities many times and even now in my fifties I'm just as frightened of public speaking as I ever was... It has caused me so much trouble...I just discovered your channel and seen a few vids... Your process of breaking it all down and looking at it appeals to me greatly... It makes me feel like I can get on top of the horror, study it, and control it (maybe).. Ty for your work 👍

You can do it, Peter. I know many people who have 100% overcome this. I have a couple of videos that I'd like to recommend. 1. Public Speaking Anxiety: 6 Mindset Tips, and 2. Public Speaking Anxiety: 6 Behavioral Tips. I'll get you'll find some specific strategies you can use in those two videos. Those two videos are meant to go together. If you search those titles and my name, you'll see them come up in the search results.

Such an interesting dynamic him being so talented in front of large audiences but hiding behind his skill! But then to just speak terrified him?! Humbling, and a great confidence booster to any who have similar tendencies! Thanks for the video!
@alexanderlyon

Agreed! I've heard many famous people, performers, etc. talk about how the speaking part is hard but the singing, guitar playing, magic, etc. is the easy part. It is a bit like "hiding" behind the skill.

Awesome content and breakdown as usual. I'm really digging David Blaine's predator evasion argument though, seeing it as an attempt at digging deeper into the underlying causes of our fear of exposure, the remnants of our very distant past, possibly going back even before the emergence of speech.

Thanks, Alex. Always enjoy and appreciate your analysis. Very helpful. I do agree with David Blaine and think there is a deep unconscious feeling that we are being "hunted". The fear of judgement is similar to be hunted. Fear of being taken down by that judgment. Anyway, just my two cents.

I believe the fear goes back to primitive times of possibly being rejected from the herd colony if they didn't agree with your sentiments. Rejection from the herd or tribe often meant Exile and death and difficulty surviving. That is where I believe the Stress and Anxiety comes from

Great clip and commentary here, I hadn't seen this interview and I've always loved David Blaine's speaking style! I appreciate that you discuss research on Public Speaking Anxiety and dispel what he says about the fear being related to being hunted. Although I do think public speaking anxiety must be connected to primitive fears we have about social status, rejection, access to resources, etc. Oh and there definitely is something about eye contact and being vulnerable. I've seen that if you ask someone to stand on a stage and have an audience look at them, without giving any speech - most people find that nerve-wracking.

Hey Alexander, what do you think of the theory that our fear of public speaking stems from our reliance on social systems and fear of being rejected? ie. Since we are a social animal, our very survival once depended on the acceptance of our tribe. To be rejected and kicked out of the tribe, or to be low status, could result in some very negative outcomes. Curious what your thoughts are!
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon Год назад
I think it's much simpler than that. I don't think survival is part of it or being kicked out of a tribe. I think it's just the obvious. When you ask people why they are nervous, they all say similar things. We fear failure (especially public failure). We fear negative judgement and rejection from others. We don't want be embarrassed. We fear making mistakes and looking foolish or incompetent in front of others. That's all multiplied by the number of eyes focused on us at once. Also, we have to speak through all of that anxiety. Many athletes get nervous before a big game and musicians get nervous before a big show but they don't have to talk when they are nervous. They can just run the race or play the drums. But our anxiety is audible in the sound of our voice and by the shaking of our hands.

@ericcartier2233

I 'd like to add something...; If you won the lottery , say 50 million dollars, nobody I repeat nobody would have the slightest fear of speaking in front of a public. because we would have this mindset of being totally secure and the fear of being judged negatively would disappear instantly.... but you are not secure financially , public speaking is adding another insecurity, and the "anxiety spiral" starts off automatically.
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon Год назад
Hi Eric. I'm not so sure about that. There are many extremely rich and powerful people who are still terrified about public speaking. Money provides one type of security but I'm not sure it has any relationship to the fear we feel about speaking. On the surface, I can see how people might think money would help. Perhaps it does a little bit for some people. But I think those are rooted in two different parts of what makes us tick.
