This interactive session sponsored by the English Language Studies Department at The New School (www.newschool.edu/continuing-e...) and Pearson Education will allow teachers to implement these techniques immediately.
English language learning is so multi-faceted that experts describe a "heterogeneous language class" as a class with more than one student. Ability, needs, background, age, and psychological make-up are just some of the variables among learners. Preparing different tasks for students at different levels is not always feasible, but learning questioning techniques and providing open-ended tasks will allow more students to become actively involved in the class. In this session the presenter will demonstrate 10 ways that teachers can include multi-level learners simultaneously in a communicative grammar class.
Irene E. Schoenberg has taught English language learners and trained teachers for more than two decades at New York's Hunter College, The New School, and Columbia University. She holds a Master's Degree in TESOL from Columbia University. She is the author of Talk about Trivia, Speaking of Values 1, Topics from A to Z, Book 1 and Book 2, and Focus on Grammar 2. Schoenberg is the co-author with Jay Maurer of the True Colors series and Focus on Grammar 1. She is also a contributing author of Future 1 and Future 3.

I've been an English tutor to non-native students in China and then Vietnam, mainly focusing on academic field from G6 to G12 which means I have taught from language arts to IB English language and literature. In Asia, there are-mostly-two types of international schools: British and American. British schools have their own teaching system such as SPAG, IGCSE and IB. However, the American ones unfortunately don't seem to have a firm, expectable and comprehensible teaching system; they depend on too much on the capability of the teacher! Non native speakers have few idea about (perfect) (academic) English. So, when the English teacher doesn't value grammar, the students ignore grammar. However, when they get G10 or G11, they are stunned and devastated by the sudden grammar check! As an English tutor and the one who holds MA in ELT, the frequent situation upsets me.

Learning the grammar of a language in a scientific manner is a theoretical exercise which gives the learner a lot of intellectual satisfaction because grammar borders on philosophy.

When I started learning English by myself the first thing I did was to study the well known Raymond Murphy's grammar book. But I soon realized that that wasn't taking me anywhere. I started to read and listen to anything written and spoken in English. To practice the writing I used to have some penfriends with excellent English. I had a native speaker as a teacher to practice the speaking skill for one year. I only went back to grammar before taking CAE exam last year.

I'm 57 and a little deaf, but even so I could listen to her perfectly! Of course I couldn't understand the questions and answers from the audience, but then I suppouse that isn't the goal of the lecture. I think grammar is necessary in some degree so that one is able to recognize the language struture and express oneself properly. Listening and Reading along is key to develop fluency in the language and for this I suggest a signature of "The Economist", but I'm just a self-educated man in Eng

My first writing task of my master of TESOL was to tell what I wanted to learn or improve from the study, I wrote I wanted to learn class activities. I imagined there would be a compendium at the end of the semester. no, of course. But it is even better, now I know the rationales of these activities which is like knowing how to catch the fish.

through the years, and discussions in our teacher meetings I've always asked myself, when I hear teachers say "the goal is fluency"...if they mean the teacher's goal. Or is it the studnents' goal? or the course goal? if it's the students' goal. Do students really know what "fluency" is? Are we focusing on what students call "fluency" or our own definition.
@teo5146
@teo5146 6 лет назад
MrRicardobotti Fluency is not a relative term. It's true though that not everyone wants to be exactly fluent, but most people want to be able to communicate at whichever level they deem appropriate. Some people are more interested in being able to read more than speak, too, for example. They are not the majority, as you would expect.

Fluency: "the ability to speak easily and smoothly" (Merriam-Webster). If this is the goal, no grammar is needed.

You have to scratch your head at so many TESOL conferences presentations following this same framework in which communicative something or other is the topic of the presentation and the presentation is delivered in a largely non-communicative way. It's the transmission style of CPD that has no place in our field anymore but shows no signs of fading anytime soon: "Direct teaching or training, the traditional perception of CPD, is often perceived as a top- down delivery model of CPD, where information on methods is passed on to teachers for them to implement. Such lecture-style teaching has proved unpopular with teachers, who tend to prefer more active and practical styles of learning (Edmonds and Lee, 2002). Dadds (1997) described how such top-down delivery could reinforce the idea of the teacher as a technician, uncritically implementing externally imposed policies. Dadds rejected the idea of a “guru culture”, with teachers being told how to teach by the experts, and instead suggests that teachers see themselves as a resource, and use their own experience and background to develop their own critical and reflective practice over the course of their professional lives. An awareness of less formal and traditional forms of CPD is slowly growing, with calls for teachers to become more creative in their approaches to their own professional development, and move away from more traditional transmission-based methods (Muijs et al, 2004)." "Some kind of focus on form is useful to some extent...." This is way too guarded to take seriously. Bailey's argument, supporting grammar instruction to "intentional" learning adults, was a much better one.

If the goal is fluency, there is no need of grammar for one to learn a second language.

Native speakers learn the language without a particular focus on grammar because they get enough exposure to it, so things fall into place. Non-native learners of English cannot achieve higher levels that way. Maybe elementary or low pre-intermediate level. Sorry about that.
