Show us the concrete test results for the basement and every floor etc.

They were rushing to get it finished as soon as possible. So that they can make mega bucks selling the flats to buyers. They cut corners all round. Whether it was cheap, unqualified workers, substandard materials. WELL, CHEAP DOESNT PAY IN THE END

Dr,I really respect and applaud your general input and education on the public and also the gap that exist especially on how public and private building construction are inspected and ' monitored' the latter is IF it does happen.😮All people would have been at their correct respective places,in this tragedy no one could have escaped what happened😢😢harmed.That structure collapsed like a building that is being officially destroyed😢😢😢.We need to get the route cause,we are horrified'in this day and age' you're spot on,its unfortunate and 😔

This is NOT a safety matter. It is a structural matter.

Firstly I want to extend my condolences to the families of the ones lost. It is truly a sad day for us as a people. Dr Scheepers you are completely spot on by saying the developers must be held to account. I must admit I could not stop laughing at one of the excuses you said they might use. And I quote " THE EARTH MOVED" or " ITS AN ACT OF GOD". I am in stitches the way I'm laughing. The sad part is is that they might actually see those excuses as a possible valid excuse to get away with murder.

You first need to establish root cause , and the first place I would look is the nature of the ground(Geotechnical report) followed by the engineer’s design + specifications and everything that flowed from that.

I am a ex Mine Manager and General Manager. In the case of an unfortunate fatality of which there were 2 during my career, initially I was held vicariously responsible, and had to prove I had delegated responsibilities correctly to the the relative QUALIFIED official.

The NHBRC is the national building regulation organization that governor's all new buildings in south africa. Not independent organizations.

I've never heard such a mouth of bull in a long time. What the hell has an unskilled labourer or even a skilled brick layer got to do with structural integrity? How can a construction site be a zone of unskilled workers?. God, this woman talked sht. The skilled individuals on this site were not hired off the street the site engineers and foreman are appointed to this project. It is amongst them where best practises were abandoned or the client who overruled to bypass structural specifications and testing. The collapse all comes down to a failure in structural integrity and the ignorance, incompetence and negligence to apply minimum structural specifications and testing. If it's not a poor geological or hydrological study and assessment, then it can only be a weak build. Even sub grade ready mix concrete would have emerged. And then, how did all these rules and by laws she speaks of eliminate the potential for structural failure?? Unless she can show that her organization was indeed represented on this site to monitor or at least verbally reenforce the building law in respect of construction procedure and quality control, from the outset of construction, then her organization is just as guilty of mismanagement and this is an indicted on her. What else is their purpose, because they achieved nothing?

I read comments and can not understand why people need to comment on which nationality the workers on site were. Its the contractor that has the say as to what they are supposed to do. All of the survi ors so far have said that the pillars were not enough to support the building & they were worried about it. I hear what this woman is saying, but she is making assumptions about the workers having done things wrong that might have caused this, which l feel is wrong. Have this conversation...training at another time. The workers follow what the contractor say. Him, site supervisor & people needing to have done inspections should solely be held accountable.

Circa 1984 the corner of the main entrance of the new Escom headquarters in Voortrekker Road in Bellville, Cape Town fell down due to the main contractor removing the back propping of the concrete slabs before the due date. They were warned as long as 9 weeks before the collapse but carried on regardless and then came the big boom. Amazingly nobody was killed or injured since the main body of men were working in other areas. Must be photographs from Argus and Cape Times, was also on SABC.

The title of this item and the stated comments are entirely irresponsible ! As a Profesdor Emeritus within the construction sector, i can state categorically that although there is a strong possibility of the main contractor being partially responsible, there are numerous other possibilities where they would not be responsible - wait for the enquiry findings !

I personally do not know.” Really? Van Wyk eventually revealed that the developer was a company called NT Neotrend Group and the name of the development, Ice Projects. They submitted plans to his office on 22 December 2022 which were approved on July 2023. Theuns Kruger is the director of Liatel Developments, the company behind the project.

Stop these developers in George they destroying our housing and infrastructure. We want nice size properties and houses

The comments in general show stupidity on publics side. Allegations left right and center. There are systems and controls in place and please don't accuse the contractor as if you know what really happened.

Don't ever call yourself an engineer if you don't have an engineering qualification. Engineer in South Africa means something very specific. NRA this is very lazy, get competent relevant people to interview, or atleast people who know that there is no such as SAFETY ENGINEER!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop blaiming the contractors. The government appointed them with there incompetance. Government should take blame for appointing the wrong contractor.
