I was terrified the whole time I watched. But the whole journey was oddly fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

I used this walk in front of my treadmill. I loved it so much I ended up walking longer than planned. Thank you for the beautiful tour of Houston....

Agree on the work that needs to be done to create a more commuter conducive America, but it can be done. Look at the impact you have made in regards to people taking a more comprehensible (and responsible) approach regarding pharmaceuticals. We are seeing progress in San Antonio with each new road development, and/or reconstructed road project - but it will be years in the making for safe commuting. Thanks for reminding us all that it takes a village! KR

The other thing to learn from Holland is that the bikes allow you to sit upright. Much more comfortable and that's how I have my bike set up.

My husband used to ride his bike to work. I’d tell him to always be mindful that the cars are trying to kill him. You can’t trust drivers to do the right thing. Riding a bike on roads is about the most dangerous thing you could do. I’d ride on the sidewalk, but I don’t go very fast.

Watching this as someone who cycles multiple times a week in Denmark is a bit scary. 😅

Biking on roads with powered vehicles can be extremely dangerous. If you really want to bike, it is best to do so on bike paths. This may mean you can't commute to work though.

I think a hardtail (or even downhill bike) with tire liners and big slicks is perfect for a mixed commute over concrete, curbs, sidewalks, and mud/grass, especially if the commute is not too long. I have such a bike and I can go and get out of the way of anything but still have the efficiency of big slicks (29 x 2.5") at 55 psi, wheel puncture protection (Tannus Armour liner plus kevlar liner) and all the comfort of front suspension and a high-end articulated seat suspension. Because we do not have a real bike infrastructure in Houston, we must compensate with both the bike and the bike safety features. Might consider a big mirror also. More is better when it comes to lights, just not too bright at night.

Nadir, if I were you I would drive my car past the dangerous areas to a convenient spot to park and then bike the rest of the way. Or take your bike on a bus part of the way.

Jeez.... what a bleak, flat place but a great insight into American urban/suburban infrastructure which was post war all for the motor vehicle. The commute couldn't be more different to my one here in the Scottish Highlands, I can get to work in 1.5 miles on the road- still I wear hi-viz and Exposure Trace/Trace R "day-bright" lights on the bike(lots of American tourists driving on the wrong side of the road lol), or I can go through the forests and over a river up a beautiful glen surrounded by mountains and make it 12 miles and see no traffic...Often go the short way to work and the long way home.... BTW-That's a noisy freehub there, is it a "Hope"?!! Anyway, soon enough petrol/gas will be so expensive the roads will quieten down😂

Yes, it is a noisy freehub sound, - but spins good as it is a ceramic hub - indulgences I do to make my ride easier. Thanks for the comments.

Actually the fact that there is now a painted bike lane with rumble strip and some separation is a great improvement over the decades of nothing at all except cars or a dirty shoulder. Still one of our longtime fellow riders was killed in the last year on this very road by a hit-and-run drunk driver, even after these improvements. I cannot think of any roads in Houston with physical barriers between riders and cars.

Systematic problem requires systematic solutions. The problem runs deeper. I believe the culprit is the US constitution itself.

You are right, what were the founding fathers thinking not including a bicycle clause in the constitution? Methinks you jest.
