Sustainability and combating climate change are only now starting to be taken seriously. Because these are emerging fields, there aren't many opportunities in the job market, yet. That means if you're looking into this field, you're probably worried about who is going to hire you and where you can work.
In this video, I will go over basically who will hire us. The most popular ones are:
1) The government
This could mean working in a military base, working as a local/state inspector, or in one of those large government entities like the EPA.
2) Chemical manufacturers
Any chemical plant that makes a product will use and produce some sort of hazardous material/waste. We are definitely needed here.
3) Tech companies
Believe it or not, they need environmental engineers here too, not just software engineers. Imagine Tesla, who's sole purpose is to be the pioneer of sustainability.
There may be some other sectors I didn't mention or didn't think of on the top of my head while filming this, so feel free to comment and leave suggestions.

Taking the Fundamentals Exam or GRE? Below are some of the materials I used to help me pass my first time.
1) Environmental Engineering FE/EIT Preparation Sample Questions and Solutions: (The CHEAP book I used)► amzn.to/2YxCZss
2) Environmental Engineering: FE Review Manual (Some more expensive practice books, but NOT REQUIRED)► amzn.to/3hqw8Ki
3) FE Review Manual: Rapid Preparation for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, 3rd Ed (Some more expensive practice books, but NOT REQUIRED)►amzn.to/2Au6Fif
4) GRE booklet practice questions (NOT REQUIRED but definitely helpful) ►amzn.to/363iqrL

------------------------------------About Me------------------------------------
I'm an Environmental Engineer currently working for the Air Force. I oversee their Hazardous Waste, Hazardous Materials, Integrated Solid Waste, and Qualified Recycling Programs. I have a Bachelors in Chemistry and a Masters in Environmental Engineering. My professional work experiences range from cancer R&D, teaching at a college level, and environmental compliance.
On this channel, I'll be sharing my story on what it's like being an Environmental Engineer, detailing the good and bad of the position. Some other relatable topics may include personal growth, job hunting, and minimalism all through the perspective of a millennial.

Great video! A lot of environmental engineers also work in environmental remediation. You mentioned dumping trash for many years... there was also a lot of unregulated dumping of toxic chemicals for many years. Lots of env engineers working on superfund (or other contaminated sites) to clean up that historic contamination as well.
@RandyLy

I don't have experience in remediation but I've always wanted to learn more about that aspect. Unfortunately, I don't have any connections, classmates, or coworkers in that field.

@@RandyLy no worries, I happen to be in the field, which is how I know lol I thought you might find the comment on remediation interesting given your background in chemistry!

Im interested in knowing how a chemistry background is applicable to remediation. Do you work in labs as part of the job?
@Paloma4461
@Paloma4461 3 года назад
@@RandyLy a lot actually. We work with a lot of toxic chemicals and there has to be a good amount of understanding of the behavior of these compounds in the environment (their fate and transport, degradation, etc). There’s a lot of env chemistry for sure. The engineers typically know enough about the chemistry and consult the chemists and scientists for more info and support but in my opinion it’s always good when the engineer has a good background so that they be a better liaison between the engineers and scientists working on a project. I do happen to work in more specialized geochemistry lab within my company which is a consulting company ... I go in about 1-2 times a week but that’s not the norm at my company. The emphasis is really on field work - collecting samples to be run for various chemical analyses at contaminated sites. But ofc we deal with haz waste disposal and typical stuff like that too

This sounds more fun than my current work LOL. I'd love to connect with you and see different aspects of environmental engineering. Honestly, this is the type of work I expected when I entered this field.

I'm a new subscriber, I love your videos, I have a question: Can I apply for a engineer in training if a have a bachelor's in water resources Science & Technology? Thanks in advance.

I didn't have any problem when I applied to take the exam. I did hear from others that they may reject you if you aren't majoring in some field of engineering. To answer your question, I don't know.

Hey, love your videos. I have a question about majoring. My school does not offer an environmental engineering degree but does offer civil/sustainable along with many classes related to environmental science. Do you think I could still get a job as an environmental engineer if i majored in civil or sustainable engineering and took a lot of ES classes or would you say I’m better off transferring to a school that does offer environmental engineering.
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 3 года назад
The exact major shouldn't matter so long as it is relatable to the field.

Was your master's a coursework or thesis master's? Could you touch upon your experience with your masters?
@RandyLy

Coursework. Thesis would have taken 2 full years, while coursework was like 1.5 years or less if you could cram everything. Maybe in a future video

what would be some of the best universities to do masters in environmental sciences/engineering?
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 2 года назад
I do not give out advice on specific courses or universities because that research is very specific to the individual. There is no one “best” school out there because many schools may offer the program, and the experience will largely depend on how you make it. The course requirements all depend on the program. Everyone needs to do their own due diligence in their school of interest. Any university that offers the program is good but just be sure to take in the financial costs and your personal situation when considering schools.

Hi I'm graduate in environmental engineering please guide me how to grow in this field? & what should I have to do?
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 2 года назад
First is just to get relevant experience by interning or working for a company. If you can't do that, work with your professor or university to see where you can get your foot in the door. Ask if they have research projects or internships for students.

The job will vary greatly depending on your location. Some countries and states are more serious about the environment than others. You will have to look up the state of Texas and how in demand environmental engineering is for that specific state.
