And I just think it's funny because technically Clara was a different character each time she was introduced - Donna got two showcases on her own, without a stupid time travel mcguffin. I didn't mention Clara because I fully expected her to have multiple moments in the video.

Fuck. After The Angels Take Manhattan, that line hits even harder. I don't think Steven Moffat fully hit his stride in writing companions until he wrote Clara but Amy was one of his stronger characters. I wish he hadn't backtracked on the fact that she murdered Madam Kovarian though. That would have been fascinating to explore, especially since the Doctor abhors any form of violence, never mind cold blooded murder. Imagine how he would have reacted if he knew his mother-in-law was a murderer. In my book, Clara Oswald is Steven Moffat's magnum opus, especially since she made Peter Capaldi's debut season much better than it would have been if Capaldi had to carry it with a brand new companion. Sorry, Capaldi fans but without Clara, he would have crashed and burned within his first season. Unlike Matt Smith, Capaldi just wasn't a good enough actor to carry his debut season without A LOT of help from previously established characters. Actually, I would argue that Clara was carrying it FOR him because Capaldi was too busy trying to cram every previous Doctor into one character and accidentally showing what the Valeyard would be like if he was an actual regeneration in the process.

Martha was not heartbreaking, Oh wait she married mickey.

I Hate Everything Is Good Apparently it’s only new series companions. Sarah-Jane may have appeared in the modern series but she first appeared in the classic series.

River might be confusing, because they really met at the tenth Doctor with Donna in the library, but then met again many times when he was the eleventh, but the rest of them were perfectly fine characters that should have been mentioned!

Larissa SPARK In my opinion, River’s first ever meeting with the Doctor (from her point of view) is in _Let’s Kill Hitler._

Sara Lisi I loved Martha, for me she was one of the best companions. On the other hand I didn’t like Rose at all. I guess we have our own preferences. My favourites were Romana II and Sarah Jane.

If you want to have nightmares, watch Revelation of the Daleks from Colin Baker's era. It shows the horrific reality of what a Human goes through whilst being converted and it doesn't pull any punches. It's one of the most disturbing moments in Doctor Who's long history and I don't think the modern BBC would have let Steven Moffat show Oswin in that state. Dalek conversion is a horrendous process for a Human being, so the fact that Oswin managed to be so chipper and, even when she stopped deluding herself into thinking that she hadn't been turned into a mangled mess of flesh and organs trapped in a metal shell, still had enough strength to resist her programming shows that she was exceptionally strong. To quote Peter Capaldi's Doctor "Never try and control a control freak."

@@sisi7304 In The Name of the Doctor, Clara's echoes are confirmed to have vague memories of her original self in the back of their minds. They know they exist to save the Doctor but they have their own lives to live outside of that. Subconsciously, Victorian Clara must have known that she'd already done the "bigger on the inside" thing in another life, so she put her own spin on it instead. I love little details like that. They help convey that each of Clara's echoes is still an individual, even though they're extensions of the original Clara. It's also sad because all of these individuals only exist to save the Doctor from the Great Intelligence's meddling in his Time Stream. That means they all have a pre-established destiny and, as far as we know, VERY few of these millions of Clara's even got a thank you from the Doctor. You'd be lucky to find just 1 Clara out of every 100 echoes who was even acknowledged by him. Maybe that's why Victorian Clara was crying before the Ice Governess pulled her to her death. The Doctor had FINALLY, after centuries of ignoring her, acknowledged that she had his back.

I'm with you on Rory, but Wilf and Jack were occasional sidekicks, not full-on companions as such. Captain Yates, Sgt Benton and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart appeared in far more episodes than Captain Jack in the classic era, but none of them are classified as companions. As a comparison, I make it that Jack appeared in 12 episodes, but Benton features in over 70, and Lethbridge-Stewart more than 100. During Benton, Yates and Lethbridge-Stewart's appearances on the show, the true companions were: Victoria, Jamie, Zoe, Liz Shaw, Jo Grant, Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Susan and Ace (plus Romana, if we count the edited-in footage of her in The Five Doctors).

I feel like Wilf gained ‘companion’ status at the very end of Tennant’s run

@Da_ShadowWarrior Pretty much. Wilf was the companion for The End of Time in practically every sense. Traveled in the Tardis, was with The Doctor for nearly the entirety of the plot, had the actor's name in the opening titles, etc.

@@DalekCaanOfSkaro Having a spinoff doesn't make you a companion; Sarah Jane Smith did have a spinoff (with or without K9) but she was the only one. Jack Harkness is much more like Mike Yates from the classic era, who appeared in almost exactly the same number of stories, but was only a sidekick not a full-on companion. The only companions during Captain Yates' time on the show were Jo Grant and Sarah Jane, although they were called "assistants" back then.

Tell me, who’s the first person you’ll think of when you see a man with a muzzle in chains unable to express any form of emotions or sense of humanity? You’ll probably think of Hannibal Lecter. It’s not a restraint, it’s a deterrent. No one is going to assist a murderous, psychopathic sentinel with chains wrapped around it because it suggests that there is a legitimate reason why those chains were wrapped around it, because it suggests that the prisoner is dangerous. It’s to deter any other humans from treating Oswin humanely. It’s too prevent other humans from helping her escape.

Big Finish need to bring Capaldi, Mackie, Lucas and Gomez in to do a box set or 100 (lol). They already have Gomez but they need the other three. I’ve met Mackie and she’s with the idea of Big Finish but at the time she said she hadn’t been approached, as for Lucas I think he’s busy currently with a mini Little Britain reboot and Capaldi always seems to be in a job so it might be difficult. It’s possible to get them to record abroad Barrowman does it for Torchwood so who knows. But that would be a dream absolutely come true. 😁

Writing was stronger with Martha and Donna.

It just went downhill after Tennant left. Matt Smith is a great actor, but it was muddied up because the seasons with Amy and Rory are all about them... Stopped watching after Capaldi

@@rocketgirlygirl8658 personally I found with matt smith his first series was amazing, and then kinda went down in quality for next series. Capalid I thought in series ramped up in quality over Time with episodes like heaven sent, oxygen, face the raven, the doctor falls, dark waters, listen etc

Yep. The Master regenerated into Missy, somehow found Clara by chance when posing as a waitress or something, gave her The Doctor's number and gave them the location of the villain in "Deep Breath" after The Doctor regenerated again. It's...an unusual revelation because when The Master does something like that, it's usually to lay a trap for The Doctor but in this instance, I think it was to give The Doctor a new companion after Amy and Rory died just so that he could have a right-hand woman while he takes over the universe with the army of Cybermen that Missy gave him (at least that's how it was *supposed* to go in *her* eyes).

But how many know the old shows- like someone seeing a remake and then saying "the one I know is the best" and partly claiming as some such do- that supposedly the old shows "copied" from the new ones because they liked the new better than the old. [example, Star Trek. It was first on in the 1960s: it spawned one animated series, numerous books, comic books, 10 movies and 4 spin-off series. When exciting JJ Abrams Star Trek showed up, some thought that anything NOT JJ Abrams Star Trek was fake].

I get that, but Rory and Nardole were full time companions with their name in the intro for at least a full season. They deserved a scene here

I mentioned Jack, River and Wilf specfically as their names crop up often in discussions like this. Much as I love them, too, I know the difference between a recurring character and a companion.

I think the thing that got me, was that so many people are debating if Jack, River, Wilf,... should have been in this video, but only a minority is mentioning that Rory and Nardole clearly should have been there. These two are somehow always forgotten. So I was happy to see you stating who counts as a companion, which makes it worse, that even the BBC doesn't count them as companions
