Recently ive been using the ultra cheap hockey tape from Walmart (like $2.50 a roll) and love it. The cheap tape seems to be less tightly woven, meaning a little more grip but less durable. You can't beat granular/skateboard tape for grip but they suck for ccw. Hockey tape doesn't irritate the skin all. A tip for the Hockey tape though is to not tear the tape but cut it, and round the corners. This helps prevent the peeling up of the tape.
Another argument to goon tape, fighters in hockey are sometimes known as “goons”. It’s a great concept! Now I know I can just use my extra hockey tape on my grip! Thanks for a great video.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video. Talon Grips are a great product that do pretty much exactly what they say they do. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Would like to have Talon Grip "rubber" tape on the grip on my Sprinfield Ronin EMP. Aesthetically, black or moss would not work for me. I would only use a clear or a silver that closely matches the frame coating. Does Talon Grips have any plans to offer the "rubber" tape in clear or silver? Thanks. Great video.
@@MADBAMtv Haha, thanks for the compliment. Be sure to browse through the comments as others have suggested alternatives not shown in the video. Thanks for watching and again for your comment.
Thanks for doing the leg work! I use Talon grips on Glocks/new polymer SIGs, and goon tape on wood shotguns/AKs. I’d rather support a firearms specific company.
Of course! It was fun to get into this one. I totally get supporting those companies... they're good companies. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Great testing. Thank you for your hard work. Helped me make a decision and lean towards the goon tape or hockey tape for my uses simply for the residue left behind.
Smooth surfaces like PVC are going to provide much better adhesion than say a pistol with texture and sculpting. I have used the rubber grip tape from Talon on some smooth surfaces and it has held fast for years, and even with daily use I only wore through one spot, and another spot is just now starting to really feel like it could use a refresh. This being said, if you want to have something like Talon Grips really stick for the long term, it might be worth knocking down whatever factory texture came on your pistol. I'm interested in trying some extra grippy hocky tape as well, but right now I'm going to let these Handlitgrips I'm trying do their thing until they start to peal off.
Yes! Very valid point and thanks for commenting that for others to see. Mileage will vary based on what the grip is adhering to. Thanks for watching and again for your comment.
Great test. There is new stuff out and I wonder how it'd rank. Handle it tape is pushed atm. If there are any others you find interesting, a follow up would be cool. There is for example tape used mostly for hunting bows.
I have the granulated talon grips, and im loving it, but $20 does not justify what you get. Im not sure how long it will last, im hoping at least 5 yrs. I still have the sticker pad, and i will use that to trace the shape onto the mob skate tape.
Thanks for the video. I have Talon granulate on my pistol but am considering buying skateboard tape in the future. I usually use sandpaper to remove a lot of the coarseness so that it doesn't eat my skin or clothes. I had the pro and felt like it got soft and squishy after using for a little while which I didn't really like
Of course, glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and I really appreciate your comment. That's some good info that might help some people out in deciding which grip they want to go with.
@@zedSixZero No problem. Pro is pretty good but not worth the price. Also, the granules on the pro fall off quite often and its annoying. Nowadays I'm just running goon tape
Impulsively ordered some goon tape. I think I'll like it. Good hockey tape isn't really cheap from what I remember as a kid. I had no issue paying for a cool product. Cheaper than talons still and way easier
Nice! I hope it works well for you. Maybe report back with your thoughts on it. It may help out prospective buyers. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I am a bit OCD. But anyone put off, by the rainbow flakes in the Pro version. ? That assteyic is bothering me, from the first video I saw of them. I know.....Small thing to gripe about, but sadly, that's what I'm like. 😅🥺
all of the ones that feel like sand paper will be rough on the stomach if carrying appendix without some sort of barrier between the grip and your flesh...I have applied hockey tape to my p365 macro grips for this very reason.
@@georgepatterson5885 Definitely rough on bare skin. I'm sure a person doesn't last long in that trial period. Glad you've found something that works for you. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
I wonder how electrical tape would do, to be honest. Seems like it would be pretty damn grippy to me but i dont know. But I've got a question. The Talon rubber grips, do you think they would be good for appendix carry, or would they be too much for the skin to handel?
@@Jeremy-by6pg In my experience on other things, electrical tape gets really gummy and gross. The rubber would probably be the easiest on the skin in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I haven't tried them. From what I've seen they look pretty sweet. Maybe if I ever do a part 2 to this test, they'll be on the list. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I placed my order the talon grips pro on August 6 and it has not arrived yet and it’s August 25 today. Payment was taken out of my account. They said it’s a 🇺🇸 company but I think they locate in 🇨🇳 🤫
FYI. You are using isopropyl alcohol, the right thing for precleaning before applying the tapes. You keep mentioning rubbing alcohol which contains lanolin. No oily chemicals should be used to preclean before applying anything with adhesives. The gummy residue could have been cleaned with lighter fluid or a product called GooGone.
@@CEclips You nudged me down an interesting isopropyl alcohol vs rubbing alcohol rabbit hole for the last little bit haha. It was a welcome nudge though because I had never heard that about the lanolin and wanted to learn more. But, I can't seem to find anything that says rubbing alcohol has lanolin in it. All I'm finding is the different ratios that exist of isopropyl alcohol to water; many of which are commonly or alternatively referred to as "rubbing alcohol". I'll wander a little further down this hole, but in the meantime, I appreciate you watching and commenting. Also, thanks for the tip about the lighter fluid.
If you're REALLY paying attention it may feel thicker but for the majority of my testing running my hand over it and gripping it hard, I felt no difference. I know that's not very conclusive but hope that helps. Those test strips are available for purchase from Talon if you need to feel for yourself. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
I am actually in the minority when it comes to the M&P series of handguns, I think it is too aggressive. I think Goon Tape would be a good choice for me for that platform of pistols, especially when appendix carrying.
That's a good point. Sometimes standard grip can be too aggressive and aftermarket grips can tone it down a bit. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Anyone know what’s the best grip tape to go with for a revolver? I have wooden grips and my hands sweat pretty bad when it’s hot and I lose all my grip making it hard to shoot and stay on target.
@@Ruby_Sterling Hmm. I never even thought of that. Maybe it will be on my pt 2 video if I ever make one. Thanks for the recommendation! Also, thanks for watching.
@@peachykeen1973 Athletic tape and hockey tape have a little different composition and therefore feel but are pretty similar but it might just be a toss up between those two. Either of those are probably going to be more grippy than Talon rubber, maybe not quite as much as Talon Pro and nowhere near as grippy as granulate. Hope this helps and good luck.
See, the problem with this statement, is that you don't actually explain why. If you actually had hard data, or even a solid anecdote, then maybe we could take your comment into consideration.
@@Osprey1994 Buy both and put dish soap and water all over them to simulate bloody hands. Then see for yourself how much grippier goon tape is than regular hockey tape.
@@BeLIEveYourMasterz If you think I’m wrong, but both for yourself. Goon tape is better under slippery conditions than any kind of hockey tape. I tested several
Talon rubber and pro grips are completely worthless. The rubber adds literally nothing. They serve no purpose. The pro does add a little grip but for the most part are also worthless. If the granulate is a score of 10 for grip enhancement, the pro is like a 3 and the rubber is a 1. Rubber is terrible. Pro is almost terrible. The pro also wears off FAST. 1,000 rounds and it’s coming off in places. 1,500 rounds and edc for a month and it’s worthless.
