About 7 years ago I had a concrete pad poured as the base for a mortared brick walkway. After allot of research I did a burlap & plastic sheet wet cure. The contractor thought I was nuts. Great to see I made the right choice. Having a patio slab poured today and this contractor never heard of wet curing...I sent him the video :)

This is literally the best video on concrete I have ever seen. It's nice to see guys with PHD's who actually know how to problem solve, and show their results from their testing. Science is pretty cool if done right. Thus, giving the best method to tackle a problem. If you are going to do something, why not do it right? The first time? And it's not expensive. Crazy. People don't know and people are lazy. Great video! If the Romans can do it 2,000 years ago why not today?

Although I'm an electrical engineer by training, I really enjoy the insight into the world of concrete you so generously share with us. I've witnessed construction workers curing the floors of highrise building during construction. It's exactly how you said. If curing is so important, why aren't machines built to facilitate the process of curing. I saw construction workers put a thick cloth and pour some water on it before the ciment was fully dried. The way curing is done today involves too much manual work. Machines would do it more consistently with less labour. What about painting the concrete to make it more water-resistent? I've see how the city makes sidewalks and they don't cure it! The same goes for overpass pilliards! Guess who is paying the bills for these mistakes? Your video makes sense!

@@mytech6779It depends on the application and climate. A city sidewalk in Phoenix, Az (where I live) has much different requirements than a bridge deck in Detroit. Its not worth sending a crew to wet cure something like a sidewalk in a mild climate where it frankly doesn’t matter, our concrete doesnt disintegrate here and a chemical compound will produce a concrete product that hold up wonderfully for years. Other climates and applications require concrete that is more impermeable and justify the cost of better curing. I will say this video was surprising as to how much of a difference there is between compounds and wet curing. I will be changing my practices for certain applications for sure.

These videos are really giving an insight that it's not easy to do it right with concrete. Unfortunately many projects are very time constrained and want to go on with the project without delay because every day costs money in salaries and rental resources too. My first job was at a cement factory, so I have some connection to this world even if I work with something different today.
@TylerLey

You are so right! However, if we can do something that is low cost that will double the lifespan of the concrete then I think we can convince people to do it. We need to get this message out to more people. We also need tools to measure this in the field. We are working on that as well. If people can see it is important then they are more likely to change it. You are so right though about time and money being so important.

@@TylerLey The business schools need to look at long term cost not just a few years. I think that today's politicians are a lost cause. Most of my profs, undergrad and grad, were WWII vets who looked at the long term. Later, as a town engineer shared by 12 small rural towns, the selectmen were part time and mostly WWII vets who wanted things done right so that their grandchildren would benefit. By 1987, most of the vets retired and a new crop of young professional full time politicians took over and things went downhill. Good Luck to you young people. Rick

So, ( I’m a concrete novice ) if you had concrete poured into a vertical mold, the top ( exposed ) surface should be cured with wet burlap for at least three days. But the vertical sides, I guess you just leave the forms on the 3+ days ? Also, when pouring into vertical forms I assume this is done in layers - how thick should each layer be and how long should you wait b/f before pouring the next layer on top of the first ?

Does moisture or relative humidity effect CTE measurement? Why does AASHTO T336/CTE test require running the test while the sample submerged in water during testing? Unless they want to exclude the effect of moisture-related shrinkage, not sure!!. In reality, concrete is not really fully saturated so measuring CTE at room temperature or dry condition may represent the actual field behavior. Sorry, it is not related to the top. Thank you for your amazing presentation.

I don't think you "double" its lifespan by curing. That 60% is relative, not absolute. Curing saved 60% of 2.5% total mass loss. Meaning, the total mass loss when curing was 1% vs 2.5% when not cured. Much much better relatively, but still just a 1% gain in absolute terms. Depending the size of the project, it may make sense to care about that, or maybe not care about that.
