Comparing Earth technology with alien civilizations | The Kardashev Scale

THE KARDASHEV SCALE. We have no idea what an alien civilization would look like. Humans are evolved primates. What if an alien species is reptilian? Or more like an insect? Or a hybrid of these? Or maybe something completely unique that we couldn't even imagine.
There is only one set of universal laws that every species must follow. Physics. Specifically energy.
One way to measure a civilization is by its energy consumption. This is done with the Kardashev Scale.
By using the Kardashev Scale, we can address some big questions about alien civilizations. Like: Fermi's Paradox. It's estimated that there are 40 billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way that could support life. Certainly a few of these should have given rise to intelligent life. And if so, where is everyone?
A recent study done by researchers at JPL and CalTech states that when a civilization finally reaches a certain point on the Kardashev Scale, it destroys itself. Which is why we haven't discovered any evidence. They're gone.
And the Kardashev Scale addresses the most worrisome theory of all. If there are advanced civilizations in our universe, it's probably best if we don't make contact with them.
Let's find out why.

Two hunters are walking through the woods. They come from different tribes and speak different languages. The first hunter spots the second hunter first and remains unseen. The first hunter knows the second hunter is dangerous because it is armed with deadly weapons. The first hunter has three choices. 1. Kill the other hunter while it has the strategic advantage. (no risk) 2. Contact the other hunter and see what happens. (some risk) 3. Remain unseen and allow the hunter to pass (risk temporarily delayed) This is the decision an advanced civilisation would have with regards to human life on earth. They've seen us, but theoretically we haven't seen them yet. This is why it's not a good idea for us to broadcast our location because the least risky decision is to simply destroy us. The only difference is that in the scenario above the two hunters have an equal chance to win against each other. However we have no chance to win against a civilization that is higher on the scale than us. It's my opinion that if they made it through type 1 they're likely at a state of enlightenment where violence is no longer considered an option and maybe just studying us to gain better understanding of their own early existence or to prove hypotheticals in their own theories.
@mikesnowsell922
@mikesnowsell922 2 года назад
I agree about the enlightenment part. Any civilization greater than type one will probably only exist by overcoming basic biological flaws such as violence, greed etc. This reason alone is why I do not fear intergalactic entities. I fear humans.

Yes, if a society is advanced enough to internally get along and explore space, they’ll likely have the good sense to not be huge dicks to other intelligent beings. If you can both form matter from energy and pull energy out of the expansion of the universe, it would never be necessary to be so grandiose with building projects. The more our technology advances, the more discreet it becomes as we push it into the background. Humans particularly crave the aesthetic of simplicity even if that simplicity takes a lot of work behind the scenes to seem so effortless. When we truly advance, this world could resemble an untouched paradise again and not wrapped in steel and glass and plastic.

While I agree that I love nature, the woods, and places that are untouched by man or Technology, not everyone thinks like us. I know this because I have spent the better part of my life constantly trying to convince my family to relocate to Alaska. I consider "living off of the grid" in the woods far from any town, city, or neighborhood "almost like Heaven on Earth", but many in my family consider this lifestyle Insane and Scary. Many City Dwellers would compare a week in the woods without Electricity, indoor plumbing, and Supermarkets to Hell on Earth. There are probably more people who hate being in nature or away from technology, than those who would love living that way. There are so many human beings that would die the first two weeks without cars, take out food, smart phones, apartment complexes, and Government oversight.

Another scary thought is from The Three Body Problem book series, where the reason theres no evidence of other civilizations is because nobody wants to be found out of fear that they'll be destroyed by a far more advanced civilization. Even if you make contact with a weaker civilization theres, because of the distances between worlds theres no way to know if that civilization will eventually overtake your own technologically and then destroy you before you even realize it. So like a sniper that gives away his position, as soon as a civilization is discovered it is immediately destroyed without question. The risk is just too great.
@Puttagirlon

One of my favorite/strongest contenders for the Fermi Paradox solution (at least in part) is basically that we are very early to the game of life arising. Since there is so much we don't know about the necessary conditions for life (or even how to exactly define "life"), it could be that life was only ever able to begin in the universe around 5 billion years ago. I think there could be variables which we cannot take into account that might hinder life from being able to arise and that ours is one of the first civilizations. In the cosmic timescale, the universe is only around 0.00000000000000000001>% (or some other sarcastically small number) through it's "life expectancy." Even though a tremendous portion of that time is spent without any activity/light/interactions within the endless blank void, there are still trillions of years down the line that would be suitable for life to evolve. Also, if life could only begin ~5 billion years ago (coincidentally, around the beginning of our solar system), there could be a million other civilizations that could be in our exact position evolutionarily & technologically that we can't observe yet. If another society had our same exact level of tech but was 2000 light-years away, they would only see the Earth as it existed in 23 AD. If they sent a message at exactly THIS moment (to a planet that shows no signs of technology or intelligent life), they could only expect a reply after more than 4000 years at a minimum. The other solution I like is that these alien civilizations operate on much longer time scales that humans. If a single message takes 500 earth years for them to transmit (which they experience the same way that we experience our temporal perception), we could spend centuries listening only to the pause between message and assume nothing is being emitted.

Exactly. Look at hard scifi books like the Three Body Problem (spoilers ahead), the Trisolarian race could barely survive a Chaotic Period on their homeworld until late in their development. That species ended up learning how to unfold protons into multiple dimensions without having to harness the power of one of their three suns. Yea, it's fiction, but still. Then you look at the Bobiverse (We are Legion, etc) and the Bobs end up defeating a technical Type II civilization with just Type I technologies. The scale is incredibly subjective. While energy use is important, I don't think our species knows enough to determine that FTL drives or other far-off inventions would necessarily require massive amounts of power beyond what we can conceive. It's just a big unknown. Additionally, the "order" of inventions isn't known. If some race develops efficient nanomachines before space travel, that race might never ever need overwhelming amounts of power. Good comment!

A civilization can't be measured - or at least shouldn't - based solely on their technology and energy used etc but instead on their attitudes, philosophy about themselves and life and how their culture is structured. What type of music, literature do they produce? What kind of art do they make, paintings, sculptures? I would be curious to know: Do they make movies? Holographic arts and stories told through advanced means? Do they have religions and if so how do they get along with one another? What ideology or ideologies do they have? What kinds of foods do they eat and drink do they consume? What values do they have? What are their fashion like? Do their children have toys like ours do? Is there any crime and if so how do they manage it? Are there drug addictions or addictions to other things like sex, gambling etc? How do they treat their elderly? Is there slavery? Other questions we should wonder about and if we ever encounter any alien civilizations should include: What is their history and how did they develop? What challenges did they face that they overcame and how? What challenges do they face now? How was/is their healthcare? Do they use currency? What are their economics like? How do they communicate? Is their one single language or many? What is their government like or do they also have many separate countries and governments like we do? Alien civilizations and their capabilities would be important to know but without knowing their background and culture knowing what type civilization would not tell you if they are friendly or hostile or what they are likely to do with their technology.

I don't think Kardashev would have come up with this if he'd worked on this formula today. In the 1960s, computers took up entire buildings, TVs used valves and CRTs, producing so much heat (and consuming huge amounts of power) that they got to be called "curtain burners". No-one foresaw that computers could be tiny and battery powered, and TVs run at room temperature. That's just two examples of how we in fact use less energy with technological advancement. The current thinking is that exponential energies are required for rapid interstellar travel. This is only In an Einsteinian universe but the ETs don't get around like that. They use the Principle of Non-locality, as everyone now knows (don't they?). Advancements in technology bring improvements in efficiency. I think John Barrow got it about right. And all these telescopes being pointed at the sky to look for radio signals: that's not what the Little Green Men are using - they prefer muons. Radio waves are bad for our health, and theirs.

Fermi wasn't as bright as we give him credit for. His error was to assume that higher evolved life forms would subscribe to our own relatively primitive ethics and morays. The reality is, that higher evolved civilizations generally do not impose themselves upon the lesser evolved. It is inappropriate to do so. Basically, it is considered an affront to common decency. We are a barbaric species, even killing off our own, cheating our own people, financially intentionally destroying other families, driving other people into starvation. So why would anyone want to contact us? No reason at all; if they have mastered space travel, they would likely do their best to stay away from us, or even find ways to suppress our capability to contact THEM. ever wonder if Hawking was a “Shakespeare” type of situation? As in was Hawking just a group of people behind the curtain?

I do think it's funny that humans assume an advanced civilization would want to enslave or harm us, because that's what humans have done for resources. My pov: If they're advanced, they've already surpassed our history & learned the value of life. I believe they would be here to help us. Love your content & so glad I found your channel!

I agree with you and was thinking the same. But after realizing there must be/there are different advanced civilizations out there, we don't know for sure how many, but you would have to think that at least one of the species does not like other existence and would go the route to destroy or hurt others to cut down competition (little crazy talk, lol).

I disagree. It would be like you are walking through a field and stop to observe an ant hill. Are you going to bend down - and start helping the ants to build their colony ? Help them gather food and raise their young ? Influence the way they build their nests in the ground ? Or - - are you going to make a passing mental note - of - "oh, an ant hill" and kick it over (the bad aliens that want to destroy) or are you going to just keep walking and not give another thought to them ? Why would a far superior civilization want to even stop and give us the time of day ?? Likely, they would have more important things to do.

@@TheWhyFiles it would be really cool if all the countries unite and instead put all of the money for military for something cool like space exploration

And it's quite possible that we could hold an alien device in our hand and not know the difference.
