I used to think this whole "flat earth" thing is just one of those Internet jokes where trolls are pretending that earth is flat, you would think this joke is only staying on Internet. Until I came to know that there are people out there who actually believe that earth is flat and conduct conferences for it from time to time. What's worse is these people even bring their children into these places and brainwashing their mind since childhood.

@@ninaanderson8046 yes, essentially. What’s hilarious is that the island isn’t visible the vast majority of the time, but she uses it as an example. I’m originally from Michigan and we can see Chicago from the west shores during periods of very specific atmospheric conditions. Either she’s being disingenuous (definitely), lying (almost certainly), has never actually witnessed it at multiple times (highly likely), or a combination of the three.

First, it wasn't a question. It was a statement. Second, there are different ways to interpret that statement. It also made me think, "what position should I take?" Sure, it's possible, but does that mean it's actually also true? Nope. Science is supposed to be always open for improvement, which sadly they often aren't and they pretend to have consensus. It can be used as name calling to ridicule others.

The position of believing the earth is flat isn't a logical one, it's born from a lack of distrust and feelings of betrayal. It's not based on a logical conclusion from a body of evidence. Trying to debate someone with this idea with logic will never work. The only thing you can hope for is to understand why the person feels so betrayed and feels this lack of trust. There's hints of the woman's reasons in her story about her husband dying. I suspect there's trauma in the past of everyone that believes in a flat earth. Of course it's very frustrating to come up against such an idea as flat earth, but debating it will get nowhere. It's most definitely not a logical issue.

My Christian in laws believe the earth is flat. They live in Hawaii on the island of Kauai. One of their arguments is you can still see Niihau (a small island to the west) from the western shores of Kauai. They say if the Earth was round you shouldn’t be able to see it. When I was visiting I went to investigate. In reality, you can only see the upper portion of Niihau, which satisfies the round earth prediction. What they had failed to realize was that Niihau is roughly 1100’ tall. If the earth was flat, you would not only be able to see Niihau’s shore, but the island would appear taller from that vantage. Not only was the shore NOT visible, but my back of the napkin estimate was that only roughly the top 40% of the island was visible based on how it appears from the west up close. This was very consistent with mainstream calculations based on the curvature of the earth. In the end, there are people who decide what is true, and there are people who discover what’s true.

Neither side presented unequivocal proof that supports their beliefs that the earth is round or flat--I was hoping the scientist would have provided such proof. One of the scientists 29:55 flashes his credentials, mentioning how he's a theoretical physicist who combines string theory with cosmology. The issue I have is string theory is a joke and so is the current understanding of quantum physics/mechanics, as no one on the face of the earth truly understands string theory or quantum mechanics. No matter how intelligent a scientist may seem, he or she can't answer the difficult cosmological, least to say, ontological questions, which are prerequisite to our understanding of the earth and the universe.

No one starts as flat earther. 🤷🏾‍♂️ The notion only becomes fathomable when a piece of your world doesn't make sense. You then seek answers for yourself. Not the internet, and not in books as such because now you're questioning everything you ever believed in, so the next step is to ask more questions find ways to prove it and seek your own answers. I'm not rich enough to to book a rocket ship. But I love to sail. I can say that after finding out that apparently for every square mile there is roughly (just less than) an 8 inch curvature of the the surface ... water is the best place to test this. So I did. So all I can say is move from your computer and stop being naive and ignorant and just rest for yourself. It doesn't make much sense and you'll not even ask your questions out loud coz they sound crazy...but you'll see if you bother

As for the sun, it is never explicitly stated, nor is it originally called a firmament at all, but raki'a, which just means "expansion". It denotes the space or expanse like an arch appearing immediately above us. They who rendered raki'a by firmamentum regarded it as a solid body or concept. The term itself merely refers to the sky, and not a direct firmament.

The contrast between the two groups is staggering. The scientists consistently come from a place of curiosity, sincere exploration of facts, and willingness to hear others out. In contrast, the other three individuals constantly framed themselves as victims of some (unclearly defined) persecution; repeatedly going on about how they are being silenced, and lied to, and attacked for their "knowledge". If I knew absolutely nothing about the Earth's shape, and I saw this video, I would absolutely side with the scientists based on this interaction alone. The conspiracy theorists have such an intense air of smug arrogance to them, that I wouldn't be inclined to believe anything they have to say. Anyone who claims to know everything on a subject, but refuses to listen to what others have to say about it, has instantly revealed themselves to be an unreliable source of information.

Vulpea Sireata a lot of times scientists speak about what they don’t know about. The amount of fields that you would have to study to no all topics is crazy.Neil Tyson is a great example. Being educated by an institution where the government ultimately controls text books can teach any story they want. The difference between the scientists in this video and the flat Earth researchers are the flat Earth group is doing hands on experiments with results that don't follow the scientist definitions. You can see things in the distance that you shouldn't while the scientists keep steadfast to the "facts" they believe to be true without the open mind to truly consider anything different. Science changes all the time with new proofs that replace old truths so why is it so beyond the realm of possibility that the truth of a globe can't be replaced by the proof of a flat one?
