What do you think about the differences in copperplate and Engrosser's Script?

That was a good breakdown of the differences- I enjoyed seeing the nuances demonstrated in real time. I like these “long form” videos that teach different scripts and a little bit of history as well. Keep up the great work! 😊

Please someone explain it to me. What is what? There is "Zanerian manual Engrosser's script or round hand" by Lupfer it looks like "copperplate". And there is Jones;s "Lessons in Engraver's script"(inside they use also term Engrosser;s script) and it looks like engrosser;s script in this video.. What are the correct sources to get the differences? I have done some reasearch and I am now more confused than before.

The construction of Engrosser's Script and Copperplate are fundamentally different, as shown in this video. Engrosser's Script, no matter where you find it, if properly written, involves many, many more pen lifts than the more speedy, fewer pen lifts used to write Copperplate. That said, if you are looking to study Engrosser's Script, what you're looking for is the frequent pen lifts between shades and hairlines. I am not familiar with Jones, but the Zanerian Manual is a great place to start.

!! Clearly, after carefully watching you use your Pen, I am holding mine incorrectly! This seems the only factor that RU-vid Demo's can't describe and why one needs an Instructor in person. But based on watching you, I am able to detect the angle of your Nib. I am making slight adjustments and seems to have helped me achieve better shades and contrast of line. I would LOVE a Demonstration about the correct way to hold both Oblique & Straight Pens. ! (I know its a challenge to Video but I"m sure any points you make will be helpful!) Thank you.

It wasn't until I started "studying" Copperplate did I realize that it was Engrosser's Script I was so attracted to aesthetically. Then I couldn't distinguish the nuances & differences between the two. I also had NO idea how many specific "rules" there are. Now knowing just the stroke "count" due to "pen lift" has made all the difference and feel that I am now progressing. My results are finally beginning to reflect Engrosser's Style. FINALLY! It seems such an important, yet overlooked in explanation detail ! Thank you for demonstrating this difference in the two styles so clearly. Kindly, JBC in NYC

This was great! I honestly didn’t know that these were two different scripts. I’m very new to this and I have no professional aspirations to do this for profit. I do however, respect tradition and the art of calligraphy in general. With that in mind, can you tell me if it is greatly frowned upon to learn the basics and then just develop my own style, again, just for personal letter writing? Kind of a weird question, like why should I give a crap what people think, but after seeing the attention to fine detail that you brought to the paper it somehow seems important to me. Thanks!
