Did you know the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone (Sorcerers Stone) had five completely unique version from different developers? This game came out on a whopping 8 platforms back in the day (PC/PS1/PS2/XBOX/NGC/GBA/CGB/Mac) and in this video, I'm going to compare every one of them.

A very minor correction. The GBA and GBC versions of the game were made by the same studio. More specifically, both were made by the same team of roughly 8 people, working on both at the same time! And they only had about 6 months. That’s right, 8 people made two completely different games with completely different art and gameplay in 6 months. Yes, there are more people listed in the credits, but most of those credits overlap with the PC version of the game, because that team and the PC team were in the same office in neighboring cubicles and the PC team helped out a bit at times. That storybook art shared by the first 4 games were done by two people on the PC team for example. How do I know this? Because I was on the PC team. I made about half the levels for it (though I’m cheating a bit with that count as I made the Quidditch level geometry and am counting that for each of the times it’s used).

Thanks so much for the input, Ben. It's fascinating. Did you have any communication with the PS1 team at Argonaut Games? Or were you lets to make the game completely independently? Also, did you do any work on Chamber of Secrets or the later HP games, or just HP1? Thanks again
@bgolus

@@Flandrew We talked to each other fairly often, and frequently sent builds of the game back and forth. But the designs were done completely independent of each other. The one exception being the Voldemort fight at the end, which I copied (with permission) from an older version of the PS1 game. They changed theirs before release otherwise they would have been completely identical. I only worked on the first title directly, though some of my work from the first game was reused in the second.

COS for PS2 was the first game I've ever played, and I love the PS2/XBOX/GC Versions of TPS, COS and POA. The castle and grounds in these games feel so authentic. Before the book came out, I had literally never heard of a sorcerer's stone. Every time I'd heard about alchemists it was called an elixir of life and how they could supposedly turn lead into gold. If they had just used philosopher's stone here I never would've known the difference.
@TheClassicWorld
@TheClassicWorld Год назад
Well, I guess, her original title was 'philosopher's stone' because she was taking the alchemical line of thinking quite literally with 'stone'. I also believe that 'philosophers' stone' is an old mythological item itself (and this is the proper spelling). I also think elixir was different to the so-called stone. In theory, both titles work -- but 'sorcerer's stone' is actually completely invented just to sell the 'magic' part of the book, I'd guess? I think the UK title is best, but I guess, 'sorcerer' does sound better than 'philosopher' for a children's fantasy story, and maybe to market it better in the US? Nonetheless, the UK title is actually the correct one.
@yarpen26
@yarpen26 Год назад
It actually reminds me how even as an eight-year old or however the hell old I was when I first read the book, I thought to myself, "wait, how does a _stone_ do all this?" I mean, I know it's magic but it's just counterintuitive, Rowling should have simply come up with some wizarding cup instead.
@anon_y_mousse
@anon_y_mousse Год назад
@@TheClassicWorld Yeah, and as I'd never heard either term in my entire life up until that point, if they had just used philosopher I never would have known the difference and people would be less confused about there being two titles because there wouldn't be.

I'm glad you mentionned the 6th Gen HP1 games being released in 2003 rather than 2001. The game originally didn't make the deadlines, and the assets were repurposed to make HP2 in 2002. Somehow they had to cut costs and put HP2 for PS2 on CDs that bear very long load times for very small level sections, and only one language at once. Despite that, HP2 PS2 still remains the best looking one and the least buggy. (GC/XBox version is full of differences, and generally looks worse for better framerate ) HP1 6th gen ultimately reused the HP2 assets, but in truth these were HP1's originally, and for some reason the quality went down once more ( compare the staircase and the park outside, the models are the same but the lighting is just way off ), with broken sound effects aswell. At least, that game's on DVD and removes all the pain and suffering of the long load times HP2 PS2 had. Also, big issue with HP1 on PS1, is that once you finish the story, there's no going back to your savefile for anything more than Quidditch matches. Else, you're greeted with a creepy laugh from Voldy... So if you want to 100% you must not miss a single secret, and, ho-boy, not miss a single coin in the gringotts sections. PAIN. HP2 PS1 would fix this issue with Creevey's Photo Album. When you finish the game you are secluded to the common room and its secret access to duels, but the Album can be used to replay any section of the game and even shows you if you collected the level's Wizerd Card or not. HP2 on GBC also improved on its predecessor by featuring what you hoped for, a party of up to 3 characters, graphics show a bit more faithfulness, and you are encouraged to replay the game multiple times to try different decks of Wizard cards that are used here as special attacks. It does suffer tho from points-of-no-return that can be annoying if you aren't leveled enough to get through the final boss. Well, I suppose you're going to tackle some of that in a future video? Best of luck if you do!
@Flandrew
@Flandrew 2 года назад
Great details! Thanks for the info. Just out of interest, where did you find out that hp1 for ps2 was originally delayed and then reused for hp2. I always thought they wanted to wait for Xbox and GameCube to launch in Europe in 2002 to release the sixth gen games
@Martyste
@Martyste 2 года назад
@@Flandrew A general rule in gaming is that speedrunning communities are some of the most knowledgeable people with the series they run, and that's precisely where I asked, as a speedrunner myself of another series. It seems HP2 6th gen contains unused stuff that would have been intended for HP1, but I can't recall what exactly. When comparing HP2 PS2 to GC/XBox, you're going to come accross way too many differences to list them in a video, but you can boil it down to this: PS2: Pros: Better lighting and ambient colors, whispers of the spells can be heard when assigned. Harry casts a real-time shadow. You can freeroam everywhere outside the castle, on foot and broom. Cons: framerate is halved to 30/25 depending on region, and skips when performing a spell ( vertex lighting calculations especially for Lumos ) Game is on CD, and as such is limited to 660MB of space. Only one language per disc, load times are very slow, at numerous places, and make the PS2 very noisy. Prefects are present in more areas and run quicker to Harry, making stealth significantly harder. GC/XBox: Pros: framerate is 60/50 fps constantly, spells don't lag at all on XBox ( but reduced particles ). Prefects guard far fewer places, and walk even when you're spotted. Load times are considerably faster on DVD/Mini-disc. Cons: Graphics are more washed out, desaturated. Outside the castle is divided into areas that Harry must fast-travel to on foot, with bushes/barriers blocking the way to open fields. You can only freeroam on broom and land on valid locations. And multiple other sound/graphic/cutscene differences are spread all across, making HP2 the most "same but different" multiplatform same-gen game I know of. If you emulate the PS2 game for recording, use Software renderer to show the superior graphics accurately. Or, if you want HD resolution with Hardware renderers, you need to have Frame Buffer Conversion on, Mipmaps on, and Blending Accuracy set on High-Very High. That gets rid of most graphical innacuracies. PCSX2 ver.1.7.2 nightly builds should perfectly support those features, whereas older stable releases are far glitchier. For the other version, Dolphin for GC is all you need with no particular settings, and it can represent XBox due to them being almost identical. That's all I have to say. Good luck in your HP2 researches!

Admittedly out of nostalgia, I love the GBC versions the most. I remember almost 20 years ago playing the Sorceror's Stone GBC version on my GBA SP, since the GBA SP can play GBC cartridges. I think I finished it but was unable to finish the Chamber of Secrets GBC version. Long story short, I had to give those games away and so I hadn't played them since then. However it wasn't until just last year where I was able to get my hands on the Sorceror's Stone again and replay it. Brought back so many fun memories. I hope to get the Chamber of Secrets again soon, and this time finish it!

It can be hard to hear criticism of media that I have a ton of nostalgia for, but I think your critiques were very fair. In the PS2 game's defense, I think it is far superior to its predecessor, the Chamber of Secrets PS2 game.

The PS2 game’s of philosopher’s stone doesn’t need any defense as it’s a great game all around and easily the best one out of all them from being fantastic but all the Harry Potter games for Philosopher’s stone are at most good games! And the Ps2 of philosopher’s stone isn’t “far superior” at all to that of Chamber of Secrets Ps2 game, their overall the same as a whole but with philosopher’s stone being a little bit better for Ps2/GameCube from the improvements that’s been made and could have been done which WAS. Their both great games of their respective source material, Entirely so!

Since my birthday is on the 28th of December my mum decided to say it was both my Xmas & b-day present. 🖥 I remember my 11 year old self enjoying both of them immensely to the point where both my mum & grandmother didn’t hear a peep out of me all day. 😄🦉🏰🪄🦁🦡🦅🐍 Cheers to you, my man! 🥃🥃

The PC version left an indelible mark on my video game tasts, I think. Adore how the Hogwarts feels, sounds, looks there, even as I know a lot of that is nostalgia. I remember whispering ghosts sometimes quietly sounding, and it creeping me out - made Hogwarts feel both creepy and beautiful and old, all at the same time. Despite the JKR situation, these games mean a lot to me- as a lonely kid who often daydreamed about being at Hogwarts, they helped a lot during my childhood.

Funny thing is that I seemingly recall the Flippendo Knockback Jinx not existing in the series up to that point, yet it’s been seemingly accepted as a canon spell to the point that you can purchase it as a “red” spell in both LEGO Harry Potter games from Wiseacres Wizarding Supplies alongside the Every Flavor Bean spell from the LEGO Creator Harry Potter PC game. I love it that Traveller’s Tales added these spells from other Harry Potter games into their LEGO games by the way. 😜

I wish I had played the 2003 version. But, my favorite from the 3 that I played (both handhelds and PS1) was the GBC version. PS1 version had no cohesion and didn't keep my attention. GBA version was frustrating. The puzzles weren't really fun to solve. GBC version may have been a little basic but it was well made.

OH MY GOSH THE MEMORIES!!! my sisters and I all shared a copy of the pc game as children and we spent the entire time goofing off at much as possible. One of our favorite pastimes was "people catching", where you would stand at a specific spot in the Great Hall to bump into students as they walked down the hall, pushing scores of them into the same corner where they would keep walking into the wall forever until we got bored or the game started to crash. It was a RIOT. We were also OBSESSED with the gnomes, we named the ones that lived around the castle and let them attack us so we could give them our beans. We also found out that there was a glitch that caused beans left on the ground for too long to "blow up" and expand and clip through the terrain, it ROCKED This was the only one of the Harry Potter pc games that we couldn't beat, we kept trying to get our dad to help us defeat Quirrel but he was just as hopeless as we were

Really fun video bringing back some great memories. The thing I found most interesting was how big the gap was between console gaming and PC gaming back in the 90s/2000s. Nowadays you get more detailed textures, higher resolution, lighting, shadows and framerates as well as a few other things on PC, but the games still look like they are from the same generation at least. The difference between a modern game running on a PS5/XSX and a high end PC is fairly small if you ignore framerates and raytracing ability.

These are all so cool though i do have to admit the ps1 is a bit cringe. I did play the GBC and i have the ps2 one for when i get a 20 GB PS3. GBC had really one annoying part the snape potion fetch quest as there were always a few items that just seemed impossible to find. But really the early harry potter games were so much better blending the books, films, and creative liberties together to make some very good games. it is a shame that went away with the fourth game when they went to them just being movie tie ins.

@@Flandrew it is really apparent when shift happened as the first 3 games had Harry Potter on the cover. While from the Goblet of Fire on they had Daniel Radcliff as Harry Potter which started to greatly show as the Fourth game was just the movie and creative liberties. With the creative liberties steadily shrinking except to lengthen the game in spots and even then many were really short.

These games are fascinating to me. They're such a time capsule. They would be drastically different if they were made any other year under any different circumstances, assuming they would be made at all. It was around the transitional period between console and handheld generations, AND the technology was still at a state where the different gaming platforms were much more noticeably different from each other than they are today, AND because WB was counting on Harry Potter becoming a massive franchise with all types of merchandise, AND movie tie-in games were still common, it wasn't just reasonable, but EXPECTED for there to be this many different versions.
