I didn't love the sound of the one at the end as much as the others and was relieved since it was quite pricey. It sounded by what Johnny said it is also harder to manage the airflow with it.

Thanks Jonny, this is exactly what I've been looking for. (not sure if you saw my email asking about this very thing.) I just added a couple Butch Hall flutes to my ever growing collection, and they really are wonderful! I honestly can't hear a $500 difference between the Butch Hall and Woodsounds flutes, which to me, are more about "ornateness" then anything else. Incidentally, I'm listening to this video using a pretty nice Klipsch sound system. That montage at the end was brilliant!

I really liked your last quick comparison at the end. Brilliantly done! I feel like I an hearing that the Butch Hall flute seems to sound the "clearest" or have the cleanest sound to my ears through my laptop speakers. I should probably try listening back with headphones to really tell. Thanks Jonny. Well done!

That was a great comparison. All these flutes sounds great. But that last flute you played was by far the best sounding. It was clear and round sound with a lot warmth with fundamental notes and the extended range high notes you hit with absolute ease and was very clear. Thanks for a great video. Will you be doing any comparisons on any flutes in Em key??

Thank you, Johnny.. I have lots of beautiful flutes now, but I've only owned a flute by one of those makers and I loved it's voice so much but sadly it kept wetting out for me, which others flutes didn't do.. I think it was just the very open-ended mouthpiece on that particular flute that caused the issue.. . My favourite in this lot was flute 3, no surprise as there is something so beautiful about the tone of J.P's flutes, but I was really impressed with flute one given the difference in cost... I've often heard people say that Butch Hall's flutes are great entry level flutes and it sounds like they are.. I loved the tone of flute 2, too.. very lovely. These aside, I'm a huge fan of Kuzin Bruce's flutes, too. This is my first watching of your review videos so hopefully Kuz will pop up, but for the combination of value and tuning, and just his lovely nature, I will always be a huge Kuz fan, which follows on from your own view that beautifully voiced flutes should be available to everyyone. Thank you for all that you do, Johnny. :)

Thank you for the comparison, Jonny. You chose four flutes, each having great voicings. So much is personal taste. I play many types of flutes (not just N.A. flutes). I like mellow, warm sounds, with a somewhat woody, grainy timbre, rather than a perfectly smooth sound with precise harmonics. (Even in Boehm concert flutes, I prefer a dark sound to a bright sound). You pointed out that these flutes each have their own signature sound. That is not true of all flute brands. I have two identical Jonah Thomson flutes -- both key of Am, both Ponderosa Pine. On is deep, mellow and smooth. The other is bright and slightly grainy in timbre. Contrary to what I just said, I prefer the brighter sound of those two flutes. So one really has to try a flute out for a while, and see what fits in their consciousness and context. I was taken with your Butch Hall flute, and I will look into one, especially with my limited budget. I like its sound far better than other N.A. style flutes that I have looked into in that price range.

Thanks so much for tuning in! You are correct in that even within a brand individual flutes can have a voice of their own too. Always a good idea to try the exact one you would consider purchasing!

Thanks for this video and channel! I fell in love with the idea after an old episode of Northern Exposure where a man makes them as a sort of dying art (as far as his specific tribe's and family's precise, methodical nuances went in the story). It made me take out my wooden gift shop flute from New Zealand in the 1970's I got as a kid on my trip there to Mom's homeland. It says Haere Mai! on it and the first four notes are wonderful then it goes awry from there.... maybe I can fix it, esp if the hole can be enlarged(?), or I could wrap it with a band and try the hole again, LOL? I liked the 200+ Mahogany Rick Spitzer(?) Rain Spirit Flute a lot. The distortion, I think, is just in the mic or recording or even my speakers; I could tell it wasn't the flute. I had an edge, to me, on the 135$-ish Butch Hall Flute, but not by much. The extra volume, if there, would be nice outside, and still without breaking the bank. I know I will try to make them now (for self or fun gift only), perhaps starting with a PVC exercise, as I have more resources and craftsmanship inclination than I do cash. I love to fin d different woods and make bows, knife handles, and carvings, so... ?

You have earned a new subscriber. I am a sculptor, and I was wondering if it would be possible to make carvings on a flute that you show in your video without losing the integrity of the sound of the flute. I am thinking of acquiring one of those that you show (Price in the middle range). I have been behind this type of flutes for many years and I never found them until I saw your video (Thank you very much for this). I would love to know if I can decorate it properly and be able to enjoy its incredible sound. I ask you because I see that the sound of the old flutes vibrates a lot with you and perhaps you can advise me. I ask you this because I do not know if the sound is produced thanks to the length or depth of the flute, or on the other hand the mass of the flute. Thank you and greetings from Spain :)
@TheWingnut58
@TheWingnut58 4 года назад
To give you a simple answer....yes, you can carve, inlay, laser engrave, etc on a NA style flute. The tuning is accomplished mainly with length and inner diameter, material choices do affect the voicing however....harder, denser woods (and other materials) tend to be "brighter" sounding whereas softer materials tend to be more "mellow" sounding. Hope this helps...

Thanks a lot for these videos. Would you recommend the F#m flutes for absolute beginners? The first one you show looks quite affordable.
@JonnyLipford
@JonnyLipford 4 месяца назад
We typically recommend that new players start with an Am or Gm flute since the hole spacing and size will both be a little smaller. Once you become a little more comfortable with the fingering an F# is very playable for most people. However, if you have fairly large hands and fingers then you are free to try an F# right out of the gate.

hi Jonny! what is the back pressure that you thank in the video? and how more or less back pressure affect the playing?
@JonnyLipford
@JonnyLipford Год назад
Hey there, thanks for watching! Back pressure is a subjective feeling for the player referring to how much effort it takes to put air through the flue to make sound. It is a personal preference regarding more or less. More back pressure conserves breath, so can help with playing longer phrases but it can also make adding embellishments to your music a little harder. Little or no back pressure allows all your breath to flow more freely through the flute, resulting in easier embellishing but perhaps running you low on length of phrasing. Perhaps a moderate amount is best and deviations to either side, more or less, is where the preferences come in.

I have been asking myself a question for a long time, but I cannot find simple answers. I do not know anything about music theory but I nevertheless have a NAF in F# minor and I would like to know with what other type of key this one could agree for a duet. Must the other flute also be of the minor scale or in the major scale, are there notes with which they sound well? Thank you !
@JonnyLipford
@JonnyLipford Год назад
For a perfect 5th, which is the same fingering on both flutes, a C#5 (high C#) will harmonize nicely playing in the same scale. You can also use low B (bass B3). There are many more possibilities.

F# and G, being the middle of the Native flute range in pitch seem to be the most popular. If F# is the most popular, it is de facto by usage only. There is no real basis for this. The pitch seems to appeal to a wide range of listeners and players.

Jonny Lipford I’ve 13 “tinwhistles” in the traditional key of “D”. One in “C”, and a Quena in the key of “G”, which I’ve yet to begin playing. What would be the main differences between a 6 hole Quena in “G” and a native flute in “G”??? Thank you!
