Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva compares the qualities of different types of roofing materials.

Steps:
1. Asphalt shingles come in three-tab or architectural style. They’re reasonably durable, but the reason most people opt for these shingles is because they’re cost effective.
2. Wood shingles can cost nearly double what asphalt shingles do, but when installed correctly, they can last as long as 50 years.
3. Metal roofs are really good at protecting the sheathing underneath from wind and water and can last up to 100 years, but they can cost sometimes four times the amount of asphalt shingles.
4. Tile roofs can also last up to 100 years, but it will require additional structure to accommodate the heavy weight of the material.
Resources:
Tom compared a variety of roofing materials, including asphalt shingles, cedar shingles, metal, and clay tiles. These can all be found at a variety of home centers or from a roofing contractor and are more available in some regions of the country depending on the housing styles.

I found myself here today, at thirty -years-old, taking extensive notes. Currently looking at purchasing first home. I found moss growing on one of homes’ roofs I was checking out. Never seen it before, nor would of thought of it. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge!

Here in the California Sierra wood shake roofs aren't allowed because of the fire hazard. We LOVE our metal roof that handles our heavy snow loads, and when it rains its heavenly to listen to.

I'd always admired all the tile roofs around here, then we had a 100 year storm go through with golfball to baseball sized hail which demolished every tile roof along with every car in town. Not that the metal or shingle roofs faired much better but was pretty shocking to see not a single tile survive on any house that had them.

I just found out about "PermaLock Shingles" (which are interlocking metal pieces) after seeing a guy who came up with (essentially) the same idea & made them out of aluminum drink cans. They've been around at least 10 years & I was hoping TOH would have something to say about how they hold up.

The rain in Spain falls gently on the roof
@fadetounforgiven
@fadetounforgiven 4 года назад
@@RegulareoldNorseBoy well, truth is we don't usually get any hurricanes as the US East coast, and tornados are really, really rare (and when any shows up, it's usually on the sea near the coast). But that being said, we have some really heavy rains as well. The Northwest area is well known for its rains (they say it always rains there, though it's obvioulsy not true) and all those hurricanes that visit the US, tend to end their days in Europe. Depending on the actual position of the so called "The Azores' Anticyclone" and its strength, those hurricanes (now mostly storms) may end up anywhere between Portugal and Ireland most of the times. And although, again, they're not hurricanes when they get here, they certainly can be anything but gentle. On February 2017, storms "Kurt" and "Leiv" had sustained winds well over 60 mph with gusts of wind even beyond that. The roof in my house got some 30 tiles or so missing, and a neighbor had it's roof completely gone. On January 2009 we suffered "Klaus", with winds up to 129 mph. It was crazy for our standards. And on the Mediterranean coast they have the so called "gota fría" (literally: "cold drop") in which when some conditions are met, they may have really heavy rains. This year was particularly serious, as in some places they got something along the lines of 200 litres per square meter (almost 8 inches of rain) in only 6 hours. That's not gentle. So, yes, we may have "gentle" rain most of the times, but even without those extreme examples, things can get "complicated" every now and then. And in the end, if those "not so gentle" rains start falling, it doesn't matter if you have this or that kind of roof, it's going to be hard.

I'm in the southwest and I have a flat tar and gravel roof. I wish more information was out there on how these are repaired and installed. Shingle and metal roofs have a lot of info out there and are pretty easy to work on with basic tools. From what I understand with tar and gravel roofs is that you need to melt the tar onto your roof and put the gravel on top. They sell sheets that you can roll out and melt on but I don't know what is supposed to go directly under them.

tcmhs look into tpo roofing. That seems to be the direction the flat roof industry is going to. I used it on a flat roof that was on an addition of a house I used to own, they can also add a slight pitch for drainage. On my old house they made it drop 1/4” every foot. Kept mosquitoes from turning my roof into a breeding pool.

Some of that could be sampling bias too. If they have the money to invest in a metal roof, they likely invested in stronger and more upgrades building materials as well like CMU or poured concrete walls. But agree with your point, I live in Florida and the metal roofs are always fine, but shingle roofs are hit or miss with damage depending on age and install

Years ago when I saw Mr Silva and Norm talk about a cooper roof, it was the first time I ever heard of these things. I fell in love with it-and cedar! Now the time has come for me to plan for a dwelling. I'd love a cooper roof or maybe zinc. There's just one small problem. The structure in question is within vicinity of saltwater. I know from some people that have been in the Navy, this might not work. I don't mind the oxidation; that's part of the point. My fear is any metal that's non coated will corrode. Am I wrong on that? I'm thinking slate for an alternative. Otherwise, can you use some acid or chemical treatment to oxidize the material and clear coat it to prevent the corrosion? That cupric green or pending the color scheme, +3 oxidation gives a purple hue if I'm not mistaken? I fear with zinc, I'm still looking at corrosion. That brownish look could work. My main concerns here? Aesthetics, and longevity. I'm going for a château in the purest sense of the word. Any advice?

Metal roofs are amazing. I've had a standing seam metal roof for almost 10 years now and it still looks new, and has never leaked. Snow slides off easy, so no ice damns in winter, and its held up to a couple really bad wind storms just fine. For me it only cost about 25% more then shingles would have, as metal roofs are very popular here. Well worth the investment.

The roof can be repainted. Had on our barn growing up and it had to be painted every 10 or so years. May want to clean off rust with a wire wheel and do a primer before the paint if it has gotten bad. Do ASAP before the rust causes holes in the roof.

When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and damaged my property. They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW -the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pickup the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. They never even went up on the roof! Save your money use someone else!

This is what the Director at the Canadian Roofing Association has to say about Hy-Grade (CRCA): "I will say that I have researched this company - Hy-Grade Roofing - and did not take me long to find several complaints and bad reviews with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). These types of complaints would have been enough for me to pass on this contractor. I see many issues and complaints related to the many ‘Metal Roofing Companies’ who promise the world to the customer, then don’t follow through when it’s time to enforce the warranty or get issues rectified..." Not even the CRCA would use you as a contractor. I invite all potential customer to contact the CRCA before signing with Hy-grade!

As someone who makes vinyl siding for a living, I can tell you that you definitely wouldn’t want it as a roofing product. It expands and contracts way too much when it heats and cools. No way to stop it. You’d have the fasteners pop, you’d get horrible oil canning. It’s the reason vinyl siding has to be attached loosely. You can’t drive the fastener tight. Further, the sun does degrade pvc a ton more than any manufacturer will tell you. Once it degrades it gets brittle. Anything falls on it it will break. Can’t walk on it. It will break.
@Michael-jm5ix

Why doesn't someone just make a single sheet roofing material? Build a measuring diagram and lay it on the roof. Use a drone and fly above, Capture the roofs dimensions and slope. Then fabricate a single sheet based off those measurements.
@Michael-jm5ix
@Michael-jm5ix 4 года назад
@Flatus Antiquitous Why can't you pre cut the roof materials? Roll it up to transport then unroll it on the roof. Of course the material will need to be lighter and just as durable.
@Luckingsworth
@Luckingsworth 4 года назад
Unrolling sounds nice until you have to figure out sliding it over the chimney or other similar fixtures that protrude. It also sounds nice until something damages your roof or is damaged under the roof that you need access to and rather than replacing a few shingles or panels, you have to redo the entire roof. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just that it has major drawbacks that must be considered.
