Comparing some Lav Mics || Deity V. Lav, Rode SmartLav+, Power Dewise Lav

In this video I do a presentation comparison of the Deity lav, Rode lav, and Power Dewise lav microphones. Hope it helps you better understand which of these might work best for you in your situation. As a note, I was recording in a small space with poor audio dampening qualities. However, if I forgot to mention, they all were recorded and processed the same way.

As I shop for reasonably priced good lav mics, this was helpful. Thank you. A summary of the three mics at the end would have made this video much more effective. I didn't even realize I was listening to the processed sound until the video was over and there was nothing more to 'hear.' all in all... You solidified my leaning. 👍

I have several of the Power Dewise lav mics and that is all I use. I do use them directly into the camera, into my phone, and also with the Rode Wireless Go. They are a very hot mic, so I often set the input gain on the device to the lowest. Then I still have to massage the audio a little. But, they are very inexpensive and do a pretty good job. I have had zero issues with cutouts, clips, clicks, or any other mic related noise. I would highly recommend the Power Dewise mics. And yes, they come with optional equipment to give you options in your setup. Great vid...Great comparison...Perfect topic. Keep up the great work!

what do you have to say about their durability? I plan on Micing amateurs for vlog style videos and I'd like to know how much I have to instruct them to be careful

@@colebarrett5133 I have four of these mics that I carry with me in my bag at all times. I have had zero issues with durability. Now obviously if a client rips the lead wire out of frustration, then all bets are off the table. It also depends upon how you mic your client. If you use the gaffer tape method and sandwich the mic, if they pull the wire, the tape will release and no damage to the mic. If you use the alligator clip, then there could be a chance of damaging the wiring. I did go to Amazon and bought some dead cat covers for them, and they work really well with these mics. I most often use these mics with my Lumix S5 and GH5 cameras and/or WirelessGo systems. I seldom have a line running from the client directly to the camera...just too much of a chance of tripping on a wire. I have decreased my input by -12 db on the camera, and then I turn the WirelessGo gain to the lowest level. The sound quality is very good at that setting. I will say it again, these mics are hot. Overall, after about four years of using these, I still have the original six mics, and am still using them. So, I would say they are pretty durable. Hope that helps. Good luck with your venture.

I have all of them but I personally like the Power DeWise. Great cable length and the extra wind muffs are a great thing to include. Seriouly, I lost my Lav Mic muff the day I bought it and didn't have a replacement.

I like Power Dewise as well :D That's too bad about the muff! You can buy a bunch of those on amazon I believe, I've done it in the past.

Horses for courses, the Deity sounds good, I have the Rode (came in a hard case!), sounds great, too many clicks on the Power Dewise for my liking and a bit too rough sounding but glad you are happy with it. Not all mics suit all voices.

Interesting topic, I actually got gifted the Rode SmartLav+ but never really used it. Do you use or recommend a specific app for sound recording on your phone?

Not really, just always used the one the phone comes with and record it in wav form so I have full quality control of it. There is of course the rode app for recording, I've tried it, nothing fancy tho.

Thanks for the comparison -- very helpful for three mics I'm considering. Is it just me, or does the Power deWise have a high-pitched consistent whine in the background that the other two didn't have?

I've heard some turn the mic upside down if plosives are an issue (as they were with the Deity mic in this review), tho test it to make sure it's not too muffled.

My Rode smartlav+ came with an extension cable and an adapter for a 3.5 stereo plug (from a 4 to 3 pin). Price has come down, too since this video was made.

Hi. I’m wondering how you got the Power Dewise mic to sound so loud. When I record with it via an iPad and Voice Recorder Pro with proper settings I get relatively soft audio. If I boost the gain then the ambience and noise floor becomes too much. How’d you do it?

I just did some tweaking in post, nothing too crazy. A compressor and limiter does the trick. When it's raw it still sound pretty good. I add a little EQ to flavor as well

So is the Deity V.Lav Omnidirectional a good choice? Because I have ordered mine but now you make me think if I should swap with the ride lav mic. Any suggestions?

I think Deity is pretty good for the price. I personally don't love the rode, I just simply use it cuz I bought it years ago. However, you can do a bit of processing on all of these to get them sounding really good.

Fun fact is that this microphone works with my Android better without batteries. This micro-chip inserted in cable somehow interfere with phone software. When batteries are in, recorded voice is very quiet, and noise is more likely to appear. Without batteries output level (gain) of recordings is way better. Important: I'm sure that batteries are inserted correctly. Recorded tests audios are both from Deity microphone, none is from phone microphone

Hello, I have read reviews that PowerDeWise stops working suddenly during the recording. I like the sound a lot and I feel like this would be a huge bummer. Have you experienced it anytime while recording videos?
