Comparing Spider-Men | Video Essay 

Alright, the next video is on Black Panther's arc from CIvil War to Endgame, and I'm still refilling my post September essay list, so feel free to suggest anything :)

Finally, somebody who doesn’t trash one franchise to boost the other. I think every Spiderman brought something new and unique to the character.

Yo? Someone understanding the narrative and thematic arc of MCU Spider-man and how it's still at it's core Spider-man even tho its not trying to replicate the Raimi trilogy? That both can coexist? I must've woken up in the wrong timeline man, great video.

This comment section has made me realize one thing. The worst thing about being a Spider-Man fan is other Spider-Man fans.

I love how both the Green Goblin and the Vulture interact and challenge both Peter Parker and Spider-Man but I that Doctor Octopus and Mysterio do it even better

So interesting to see a breakdown of the similarities because folks focus more on why they're different and therefore saying one is better than the other when they're just different for the time they came from and what they're connected to, a universe of other superheroes for Tom's and the beginning of many stories to come for Tobey's.

Something that I really like about MCU Spider-man is how he investigates and works at fighting the antagonist before things can escalate. As much as I love Raimi's Spider-man, he only ever seemed to _react_ as opposed to _act._ He never interrogated people, he never went looking out on patrol for the antagonist, and he never planned ahead. He only ever retaliated towards fights, and if the antagonist got away, he would wait around for them to do something else. Even in TASM, Peter only tried to track down Conners to get the picture for the Bugle (at least he actually followed Conners into the sewers after the high-school fight as opposed to just leaving the scene in a completely different direction to wait for him to show up again). When you think about it, the MCU Spider-man would happen to the plot, while the plot would happen to the previous iterations

Poor Spiderverse, everyone ignores it despite it being the one of the best Spider-Man movie

MCU Spiderman has the intelligence and modernity of Iron Man, but with the honour and sense of duty as Captain America. If done right he could really lead the universe over the next decade.

Let's pray and hope one day Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland Will do a crossover in a future spider verse film.

i think it’s so freaking cool to see a live action spider-man not only interact with the avengers on the big screen but play a very prominent role in the series and i feel like not enough people appreciate that

I like spiderman homecoming, but man I’d don’t feel anything while watching it. The rami films always hit the emotions.

Something I feel that the MCU nailed with Spidey is incorporating his youth and his school life into the plot itself. In the Raimi and Webb movies, Peter would basically become *"THE"* Spider-man in his prime in the first movie for each. In this interpretation, he stays young, he's still figuring things out and it'll take some time until he's at the top of his game. It's also got a bit more relevance to the audience. In the MCU Peter deals with his aspirations of becoming part of something big get in the way of his real life, and he gets a reality check when he too over-extends himself as he genuinely believes he's anything but a kid who should focus on school. And then in FFH, he deals with the stress and anxiety of his responsibilities, he doubts himself and believes someone else would be better at doing his job than himself. He learns that he shouldn't try and be someone else because that's what everyone expects, he should just be the best form of himself for the sake of being himself. The previous iterations have done a great job at being relevant to the character, but unless it's relevant to the themes, plot, and character arc, it can start to get a bit stale. Especially if it's applied to a character that is part of a completely different world .

Honestly, how could you forget Czech Spiderman? That one's legendary. But also so elusive no one has ever seen it. They've only ever heard about it.

I firmly hold the belief that The Raimi Trilogy and MCU Spider-Man are the best live action versions we could be given of Spider-Man. Raimi Spidey is a near direct translation of comic Spider-Man, while MCU Spidey is a translation of all aspects of spidey from the comics, previous movies, video games and shows, bringing all the aspects that work with the character into one version. Goddamn we are so blessed to have both!!!

Spider-Man homecoming I just wish we saw the 6 months Peter dumpster diving. Making his homemade suit. Getting bit by a spider uncle Ben dying. Which was mentioned in civil war.

This is the second live-action Spider-Man adaptation comparison video I've seen that disregarded the Mark Webb films entirely, and I don't know whether to laugh or wince.

For me there is one tiny bone of contention for pre- Holland Spideys: As supposed introvert nerds they have been kissing girl like experience Casanova. I prefer Holland's awkward moments with girl. (edit: and also girl's father)

I honestly relate and love MCU Spider-Man It's definitely at my top 5. I Will admit it has problems and it's not my favorite or I would even call the definitive version of Spider-Man but I still find that as a great version of him It depicts a teenager pretty well, a man child who has people who looks up to responsibilities and things He needs to take care of, He thinks that he knows the world inside and out when really he still has so much to learn And we do still see things that happen to Spider-Man, Like the dude goes to stop a bike thief, accidentally web someone to his own car believing he was trying to steal it and spends most of his time just hanging around waiting for someone who needs help. He's one of the only heroes who would probably help an old lady cross the street And even in the end of that day of helping people out his backpack gets stolen and he can't find it anymore causing him to have to carry all his books by hand. I also love How even though Uncle Ben isn't mentioned once you still know that Uncle Ben played a big role for Peter, many many times throughout homecoming Peter is told to stay put in not to intervene, But we all know what happened The first time he didn't. The moment the shows is the most is the party scene. Peter looks an explosion from far away that has nothing to do with his neighborhood or anybody he cares about, And if he doesn't show up he's going to embarrass himself and net for saying that Spider-Man was going to come. Peter can quite literally get the fame that he wants at school but he throws it away just so you can go stop something that has absolutely nothing to do with him. He is at heart Spider-Man

Tom’s highschool experience is the most authentic and accurate representation of school today as I could ever see in a spiderman film. Maybe that is because I used to attend the highschool that inspired the school Peter attends in Homecoming. But either way, neither Tobey nor Andrew’s school experience ever spoke to me as relatable.

I have been seeing a lot of hate for MCU Spider-Man by raimi fanboys claiming its not the real Spider-Man(acting like the mcu did a luke skywalker last jedi to spidey) but me being a hardcore Spider-Man comic reader it is further from the truth. Pretty much raimi's Spider-Man is the classic lee/romita sr type vibe to the character. Where's the MCU Spider-Man they wanted to do something new but still accurate. So they took the avengers Spider-Man(Spider-Man annual 3, avengers 236-237, avengers vs thanos and new avengers peter) This peter wants to be an avenger and is more clumsy trying to prove himself, trouble with a suit tony stark made for him and a AI(iron spider in the comics) and screwing up sometimes as well as needing mentors to help him get better, not feeling he is good enough to be such a big time hero and turning down the big time to stick close to the ground. so raimis spidey maybe more accurate with the little details mcu Spider-Man is still just as accurate at the core and has more comic nods to things we have not seen before. Why they both are great adaptations. Ramis Spider-Man again shows how giant Spider-Man is to the world much like the video says. He is the greatest superhero in the world and Spider-Man 1 treats him like that. How the world views Spider-Man. MCU Spider-Man more goes in on the Spider-Man views the world. He was always the everyman, the small street level hero cleaning up the bigger heros mistakes. While the bigger heros fight earth ending threats, they forget the damage they may have caused resorts to street level threats. A lot of raimi Spider-Man fans also don't like iron man and hate how spidey views him as a mentor and father figure in the mcu(some think he is replacing uncle ben) again further from the truth. Comic wise tony did want peter to be a air to his throne and peter wanted a father figure and saw tony as that(civil war comic run) but of course they had a falling out. Instead the MCU kept them together and added the captain America comic mentor and captain Stacey mentor to tony as well. It would get annoying if every hero in the mcu was bitching at spidey and a mentor. Having iron man be the only one makes a better story. Uncle ben is still important as its the reason Spider-Man is Spider-Man. Peter has come to terms with this now and suits up for uncle ben. Iron man just became his mentor to better him in crime fighting much like the comics where peter is in need of mentorship from many hero's. Some also claim mcu peter is just miles morales(this is only in far from home with peter questioning if he can be a new iron man and this leads happy to say that's not him be Spider-Man, and of course ned is granke and he gets a lot of suits made for him till the end. ) it really is only small things they borrowed from the miles story. (again new avengers peter used tech to upgrade his suits a lot) Spider-man 1,2 and 3=classic lee/romita sr Civil war=lee/ditko, new avengers spidey Homecoming=new avengers spidey, spidey annual 3, avengers 236-237 spidey, lee/ditko(miles morales story for ned) IW and endgame=new avengers spidey, avengers 236-237 spidey far from home=Avengers vs thanos spidey, spidey annual 3, lee/ditko spidey.(miles morales for insecurity to be the new replacement for a dead hero and learning to not be that)

Raimi trilogy will always be the definitive Spider-Man. It captured what being a superhero is really like along with the consequences which come with being one. It made it more human because everyone at some points had an identity crisis and with Peter having one too made us relate to him. Spider-Man 2 captured it perfectly. I find myself watching it every year to remind me that even though I have issues in my own life, that I shouldn't give up because Spider-Man himself went through the same thing. Even with all his powers he still couldn't have everything he wanted. Tom's has a youthful vigor and energy which resonates with young people today with its more modern approach. I enjoy Tom to some degree but I personally can't relate to him as much. His Spider-Man to me stays too naive and doesn't seem to understand the consequences of wearing the suit.

Can't believe your favorite isn't Italian Spider-Man 0/10. Real talk great video, I feel like so much of the discussion between these films is so negative it was really refreshing to see a more reasonable well rounded deep dive into both of them instead of pitting them against each other. I look forward to the other parts.

I was never a fan of Tom Holland's Spider-Man because those films ignored the important aspect of tragedy and struggle in Peter Parker's life--he was simply just given everything he needed by Iron-Man and never faced any legitimate struggles of guilt over the mistakes that he made in the past that should motivate him to be better.

Great video man, this was honestly the best video comparing raimi Spider-Man with MCU Spider-Man. It makes me appreciate homecoming a little more now since I thought the film wasn’t that great when I first watched it. You can truly say that both these Spider-Man films are equally good with their own perspective if things and I think people should understand that homecoming has to be different from other Spider-Man films.

What’s so unique about both films is that the characters would actually work a lot better in each other’s universe. Holland’s Spider-Man/Peter is eager to be a hero, save people, prove himself or his mind, be responsible. That type of Spider-Man was needed in Raimi’s universe as it was directly after 9/11 and ppl needed a hero was eager to save them. Maguire’s Peter/Spider-Man was reluctant to be a hero, always doubted himself and wasn’t sure about his relationship with MJ. This character works perfectly within the MCU, as he’d be surrounded by more established characters, so it’d make sense for him to be a reluctant hero that people aren’t sure of. Also, the Raimi villain quips would so work in the MCU. Like imagine Dafoe’s Green Goblin or Molina’s Doc Ock fighting Iron Man, Cap and Black Widow and then Falcon and War Machine showing up.

I view the new trilogy from the mcu consisting of us watching a kid Peter grow up to be the adult Spider-man. the reason this can work is since Tom Holland is relatively young, he can grow and fit into the role we longtime fans expect of peter- a man with the burden of the world, simply put. They can take the current interpretation to new heights, in say 20 years or so with a dozen films featuring him.

At some point I did want to compare them and try fighting the case for which is better. Honestly? You can never compare them. Not only do I agree with what you've said, but it's also the chapters in their lives people have to take into consideration. MCU Spider-man is literally a kid who is still going through highschool. Rami Spider-man is Peter's transition from becoming a boy to a man. The film itself shows him graduating High School, moving out of Aunt May's place, and getting a job. These two Spider-men are literally in two different stages of their lives. You wouldn't compare a child to a grown adult so why do that here? You also have to think about the fact that, despite how we want to see it, MCU Spider-man movies are a piece of a puzzle while Rami's was able to do whatever they wanted. It was revealed that Tom's Spider-man would have multiple trilogies detailing different stages of his life. Eventually we could get a more grown-up Spider-man, but as it is now I am loving the slow progress.

To me MCU Spider-Man's potential for being the 'working class hero' is completely squandered by putting him front and center of an intertwined corporate movie industry. When Civil War came out I was genuinely excited to see Spidey interact with all the other big players, and I really think they nailed the poor nerdy kid from Queen's in Civil War. Homecoming tried to end on a ground-level Spider-Man, but the Mouse decided it was time for him to go into space. If Raimi's trilogy was a love-letter to the classic Spider-Man comics, I was hoping MCU would be a similar love-letter to Ultimate Spider-Man comics. In both MCU and Ultimate, Peter-Man struggles to have his own identity amongst a universe of out-classed superheroes, but Ultimate nails the internal conflict. Spidey dies taking a bullet for Captain America, who's so focused on Ultimates v. Avengers (basically Utlimate Civil War) that he leaves him bleeding out AND THEN fights the Sinister Six to save his elderly Aunt and friends. Spider-Man isn't supposed to play with the other heroes, he's supposed to be the greatest one of them all. And time will tell with the MCU, but to me the best part about the character is that no matter how hopeless the struggle seems, this broke kid from Queen's does everything he can to save someone, or anyone he can. MCU Spider-Man wants to be a hero like the greats, but 'Spider-Man' just wants to do the right thing simply because he has the power to do so. To quote Aunt May "Sometimes, to do what's right, we have to give up the things we want most. Even our dreams" Edit: To editorialize a sort-of brought up point, I don't think Spider-Man ever needs to have an indentity crisis. I'm tired of seeing Uncle Ben get shot too, but really his origin is about as perfect as it gets. Spider-Man shouldn't need to find his identity. 'Spider-Man' is the identity. 'Spider-Man' is Peter Parker's redemption for being an irresponsible kid, literally it's the story of a boy taking all of the lessons he's learned and becoming a man. Edit: TLDR: being Spidey should suck a$$ and Peter-Man's motivation should come from internal 'ghosts' and a will to act on them

I really enjoyed this video, it is nice to see someone step back for a moment and not compare the sets of films as if they oppose each other entering and point out where they are similar. It has been tiring to see people praise and degrade the same films and I think it is important that even though they seem very different they both are similar

I don't think I would characterize the Raimi Spider-Man as being driven by guilt or another man's vision. We're all shaped by our parents and molded by our past mistakes. Many people have to live with significant failures that change the direction of their lives. That doesn't rob them of personal agency. It just gives them a richer, more complex inner life. I don't hate the Holland era Spider-Man. It's just very underwhelming. He's just a generic nice kid. He isn't presented as a character with either the personal resilience or the scientific resourceful of the Raimi version. He leads a consequence free life in which everything turns out alright and Tony Stark solves all his problems.

The first (Sam Raimi's Spider-Man) was made by a fan for fans to tell the story of Spider-Man in the most sincere, honest and respectful way possible. In doing so, they created a legacy all their own. They changed film. They created immortal images like the upside down kiss. They created one of the greatest sequels and superhero films ever made. The other series of movies is all about marketing, pandering and sales.

Hot take but I actually really enjoyed Marc Webb's interpretation. Homecoming was good but it just didn't really do it for me. Far From Home is amazing though.

I could have seen a sinister six Arc where tombs was more of an amoral casual member than one with a real grudge against spider-man. And because he knows who the kid is and what he's capable of he considers them on equal terms and he could even throw centrist lines around like "a jobs a job kid, no hard feelings" and that could even play into the story later where he can no longer be amoral to the crimes of the Sinister six or watching peter put his life on the line again for the right thing and be capable of saving pete from making the sacrifice. I feel like they were open to a sinister six in universe with scorpion and vulture, and whoever else they literally had a lot of potential but hopefully we get a really good sinister six in the future

Or y'know... Just watch spectacular spider-man or the 90s animated Spider-Man, those 2 are the best Spider-Man show out there.

Great video! The way I view the different adaptations of movie Spiderman is by looking at their comic book counterparts (or let's say inspired to) Tobey as the 616 Spidey from the original comic Andrew as the Ultimate Spiderman(alternate universe) While Tom is somewhat of a Miles Morales Spiderman and I understand why the MCU used it as an inspiration for reinventing Peter as a character. If you would look closely you can see that it's also a timeline from the first up to the current version who holds the mantle of Spiderman and I love them all! I would like to explain more but that would take so much time. Btw I'm happy that this is an essay video that doesn't compare each Spiderman in a toxic manner unlike the other videos here on RU-vid.

I also think that the overall tone of homecoming makes perfect sense when you consider that this version of spider-man exists within the MCU. In Raimi's version he's pretty much the one true hero. He's the one who has to save everyone, while Tom's version of spider-man lives in the world where literal gods can drop down from the sky and save people. As good as spider-man is, he operates in the same system as the original Avengers and compared to them, he is the comic relief of sorts. He is just a kid, who has more experienced heroes to look up to, therefore, he doesn't have to be as serious and mature as Raimi's spider-man. So even the final scene being much smaller-scale and comical makes sense, when you consider his general stance within the MCU.

One of my only issues with mcu spiderman is that he doesn't feel like his own character he just feels like iron man jr because he just inherited all his stuff and is still trying to live up to him even though he's dead and I feel he relies on iron man way to much also in spiderman far from home there aren't any consequences or at least don't feel like there's any. In the spiderman comics and in spectacular spiderman whenever spiderman wins in a battle it effects Peter parker in a negative way and the characters react to it and it makes the stakes higher for the characters on a personal level which is more than I feel for the MCU version. Back in the day I would’ve compared the 3 of them to the animated, Christopher Daniel Barnes version (which is the quintessential version imo) but honestly? They’re all different versions, different iterations of him. They each have something special, they each bring something unique. I don’t think it’s fair anymore to compare them.

I think Homecoming and Far From Home are entertaining films and the new Spider-Man is a great character, but I don’t find him a great a Spider-Man character. It feels like everything has been handed to him by Tony Stark.

Mr. Pretentious, implicitly, if I may, what would you say is the reason which before Tom Holland (in the movies) the films perpetually keep peter in school either HS/college/university? It seems similar to me to how DC can't figure out how to keep a Batman and is really bad at Robin-ing. Have you any thoughts on this? Especially in light of loosely connected stories like Venom which ostensibly historically were more than Brock, but also Peter Parker stories. And finally how does this all mesh and intercrossconnect with Into The Spiderverse and the Miles Morales spidey... if there is a connection... and if not are we just remembering the parts of older films we liked and implying that nostalgia onto the next cheapening it with old expectations in a new iteration?
