Which city do you prefer out of the two? edit: Of course I forgot to include something in this video - Red Deer also has the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, another reason it is the better sports city of the two.

Lethbridge because the people are less annoying, it has a really funny city flag, it's downtown is really nice and walkable, and it isn't the worst city over 100k for crime in English North America like Red Deer is

I’ve lived in the Red Deer area for 17 years. It’s a beautiful area and quick access to not only Edmonton and Calgary but the Rockies as well. To add to the transit- there is also BOLT which operates mainly in Blackfalds (13km north of Red Deer) but has 2 routes into Red Deer, one to the North end and the other to RDP making it more accessible to more people.

I kind of like these city comparisons. I lived in Grande Prairie for a number of years as well as Red Deer. Good people, also blue collar, but horrendous for petty crime, visual appeal, and overall city cleanliness. I'd really like to visit Lethbridge one day.

Lethbridges is like a zombie land downtown. The drug problem is out of control, and the crime is terrible. Businesses have to lock their doors during the day. You can't leave anything outside without it being locked down or consider it gone. Walking at night is no longer safe. Lethbridge has some serious issues and needs to get a handle on it before it gets even farther out of control.

Have you ever been to Grande Prairie Alberta? The wind is absolutely insane there, every year there's at least one but usually a lot more wind storm that blows over 115km/hr. Once got blown right off the highway just coming into the city when a semi passed on the double lane the sudden blast when the truck passed pushed our little sports car right off the road. Gotta be careful driving through the city when it's windy because it's common for giant signs, plywoods or traffic lights come flying out of nowhere from the strong winds. Never seen a wind storm in Lethbridge but definitely Northern AB wind storms are always on the news

Unless you like freezing cold, snow, tornadoes and hail - Lethbridge has a MUCH better climate than Red Deer. It's 5 degrees warmer in the winter, with much shorter winters than Red Deer. The wind also provides a breeze that cuts the heat in the summer months.

I mean I've experienced all of the above in both places, but fair with the tornado part. Much more warnings up there, most skirt around lethbridge more towards clarahsome. Snow sucks though, but the chinook wind takes care of it. If you're prone to migranes and headaches with pressure in your sinuses, lethbridge is a hellhole.

From Red Deer born and raised. I agree with your analysis. The province really screwed us when they cancelled the University. When I was in my 20’s Red Deer was great but now the crime, homelessness and hard drug use is out of control. I have enjoyed my time in Lethbridge every time I’ve been there. But I could recognize some of the similar issues that we have. It’s a shame because we have the money and resources to deal with these issues but the provincial government and I can say for Red Deer the municipal government has failed. But in the end these are Canadian cities and Canada is a great place to live compared with the rest of the world. Never be scared of moving to Red Deer. More the merrier.

I don't put a lot of weight on the crime index of either city. I live in Red Deer and the crime rate is a joke. Crime index only reflects reported crimes. Sure, we have the occasional murder of car theft, but most of our crimes are petty, which, when reported raises the index. Do I feel safe walking downtown? Hell yes. I can walk down there any time of the day or night and not worry about a damn thing
@strangenorth
@strangenorth 5 месяцев назад
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - that's a fair point, crime index doesn't tell the whole story. And I probably could have communicated that point in a more detailed and balanced way - Red deer is a peaceful and pleasant city overall. I just used the crime index numbers cause it's a quick way to give general comparisons. Cheers
@lornemilton8875
@lornemilton8875 5 месяцев назад
They need to rethink how to gauge crime in cities. They have Red Deer as one of the most "dangerous" cities in Canada and it simply isn't, not even close. I've never been to Lethbridge, but I would like to. I'm sure it suffers from the same false reputation. I grew up in Vancouver and I know for a fact it's far more violent than any city in Alberta. Gang violence doesn't get reported much, if at all. That affects the index

I just watched the Populations at the beginning and paused to comment, When Times are Good and Oil and Gas are Strong, Red Deer wins Hands Down, the oil and gas economy doesnt effect Lethbridge nearly as much as Red Deer, but Red Deer has more of a Mid Size City Feeling when your Downtown, and Leth just feels like a Big Town, RD also has a Mini Metro Area with BlackFalds and Lacombe adding about 25,000 people and are basically attached kinda like Redcliff is to Med Hat,. Lethbridge is Still seperated from Coaldale and Coalhurst with some industrial between them but definately no Housing in between and mostly future buildings, construction, or Lots. Also RD has Sylvan Lake (another 14,000) and Innisfail (11,000ish), both are only about a 5 minute longer drive then Leth to Coaldale. Also a much busier Highway and Gasoline Alley Stretches the City out as well with Large Trailer Parks, Nice Outdoor Parks, some Housing, tons of Businesses and More places for Food in RD. RD County is also very beautiful and full of Trees and Much More where Leth is just Flat with 1 coulee... Even Med Hat is more Beautiful then Leth with tons of Parks, Recreation, and Coulees while being 30mins From Cypress Hills. I think Leth Sucks and ive spent so much time there it just has no excitement for me, even though it does have more clubs and pubs then RD, and RD use to have a wicked Night Scene and desperately needs its NightLife Back, but it still has a wayyyy more Hustle n Bustle Style City/Metro Life, while being 1hr from Both of Albertas Major Metropolitan Areas. Current Score Leth 6.5/10 RD 7.5/10 (9 in 💥 times)

Good video and very well presented. I have played in tons of ball and hockey tournaments in Lethbridge, hell I have even played in 4 bonspiels in Alberta's Bridge City and found it welcoming. I haven't been there in 7 or 8 years and have heard the drug problem has escalated and I know the same can be said of Red Deer. My wife's mother lives in Red Deer so we hear the stories about the deteriorating Little Gaetz and what a shitshow that area has become with the druggies shitting on the sidewalks, businesses struggling to keep their doors open in a riff-raff filled area where crime continues at an alarming rate. On one hand we have the homeless advocates and on the other hand there's those who want to send the drug crazed homeless packing to a different area of Alberta. An associate works in The Provincial building in Red Deer and she tells tales of the bizarre regular occurrences she and her co-workers witness from their office windows. Little Goetz and part of North Red Deer are to be avoided... don't even get me started on Fairview.. or should I say Riverside Meadows. On an upside for Red Deer, they have the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, which is terrific and well worth the drive from Edmonton or Calgary... Real easy to get to as well and Red Deer is just minutes from Sylvan Lake.

Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to leave feedback - both fair points, could have definitely mentioned Lethbridge College. So about Lethbridge not being part of the Badlands - some friends have argued that point with me too, but I thought the city was located on the edge of the Badlands region? I understand that it is included in the grasslands region of the province but I thought the badlands cut into this region and Lethbridge was included in this. Many sources say it is the biggest city in the Alberta Badlands, but some don't. I was also called out for including too many pictures of the city in the dry season, looking a bit brown. Again, I think this is because I always thought of Lethbridge and being this dry dusty Badlands city and I could have been more balanced with the images I displayed (the city can be very lush and green, although it's true that it has less overall rain than Red Deer). I thought it was a fair comparison overall but I could have done a couple things better. Cheers mate!

One category that might have been interesting to compare is proximity to the mountains or outdoor recreation. Lethbridge is closer to the mountains, especially built up areas like Waterton or Crowsnest Pass/Fernie, but Red Deer has some lakes close by and David Thompson Country isn't too far.

A lot of cities would die to have what South Lethbridge has, Mayor Magrath Drive South, right in the middle of the city.... Henderson Lake golf course, fair grounds, great Baseball facility, tennis courts, nice park adjacent to Henderson Lake, Nikka Yuko Japanese gardens, swimming pool, lots of motels, restaurants all along a main thoroughfare.... beautiful area. OK, I'm not a world traveler, but I would imagine a lot of cities don't have these kinds of amenities within such a short distance. For sure Red Deer doesn't have this. I live in Edmonton now for the last 30 years, they have nothing like this. I don't think Calgary has either. It seems also Lethbridge is a very tight knit community, at least it was when I moved away 30 years ago, but I've heard it's changed a lot and not for the better. Too bad.

Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - you know what I went back to see what you were talking about and you're right I did do that quite a bit. Wasn't even aware of it - it sounds dumb but I kinda think I have this image of Lethbridge being this dusty wild west town and I subconsciously selected a lot of pictures of the city looking brown and dry. It's definitely not as green as Red Deer, but you're right - I could have included a more balanced selection of pictures and there are better pictures that display Lethbridge during the spring/summer. Thanks for the feedback, I'm a rookie at all this and it helps to know what might be throwing people off. Cheers
