I think the take away is if you are getting cards graded go PSA. If you are buying graded cards stay away from PSA. The value is elsewhere.

I would love to see a video like this for vintage. Maybe looking at a Hank Aaron card from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s and a May card from each decade as well. SGC has recently been more consistent than PSA on their vintage grading in my experience, and I’d like to see a value comparison. Great video!

It amazes me that there’s even a difference in value in the first place. It’s the same card in basically the exact same condition. Only difference is the plastic surrounding the card. Is that what will make such a big value difference?

Exactly and as of late the reliability of a PSA grade is just laughable! Sheep will be sheep expecting a PSA graded card to be more valuable when in reality the grade is probably the least reliable of all 4 companies.

Are we tho? Do you trust gma grading or hga? I’m not saying I don’t but people collect for different reasons. Ultimately modern cards are preferred by people to be a PSA10. If I have almost any valuable modern card that has high grades in a beckett slab it makes financial sense to reslab into psa. I think it’s just the nature of this kind of hobby. Stamps, coins, paper currency, video games, action figures etc…same basic thing.

These price differences in regards to what company graded it happened over years and millions/billions in sales and trades. I guess I’m just trying to figure out what we are all so foolish for for doing because I think it’s logical.

I prefer SGC but for modern it makes no sense to use a company other than PSA. Long term, real collector/investor/dealers will move to vintage. As others have noted, the perception is the SGC is close to PSA in vintage. If people accept SGC for their vintage, over time they might accept SGC for modern as well.

When I buy a card as investor, I do the type of research that you just outlined, and try to arbitrage a bit. However, when I buy as a collector-outside of Set Registry competitions, I find myself buying more and more SGC and BGS quads so I can get nice cards at cheaper prices. For PSA to be caught we need more collectors buying (again outside of set registry competitions) and less investors.

Definitely gives the air of you looking down on others when you say that PSA is "following the herd". PSA labels are the most visually appealing and give the most information other than BGS. PSA also the as the best resale value which really helps to turn cards you pull into cards you actually want.

Alex,PSA does have great resale value,but BGS gives the most information breakdown, I don't like PSA Charging $99.00 then for the lowest price $19/card you have to send in 20 cards not everyone can drop a total of $500.00 to grade that many cards,should be $19/card no matter how many cards you send PSA.

whats really remarkable is that people like PSA's grading scale, and so what do all the companies do? emulate grading scales of the other companies ... I really don't know what the malfunction in their head is on that logic. GEM MINT CARDS SHOULD HAVE NO CARDS GRADED HIGHER.

This was awesome, Chris! There is certainly opportunity here for collectors (and speculators) to get cards at lower prices by buying cards from other grading companies. Assuming these "big four" companies are still around in, say, 10 years, I would be surprised if this large gap in values still exists; I imagine that the hobby will eventually come to realize that there is little reason to pay such a high premium on PSA graded cards, and the invisible hand of the market will push these values closer together. It would be certainly better for the hobby for there not to be a large difference in market value between grading companies, as it would force grading companies to either innovate or provide better customer service to gain a market edge.

I don't know how a PSA 10 is worth forty more percent than all the other companies when they had the most mistakes and some of their cards that are tens are more like eights.

I totally agree, but it would be difficult to find vintage cards with lots of sales data in such high grades. The data for vintage (pre-1980) and pre-war would be all over the grading scale (1-10) while most ultra-modern & junk wax sales data would be high grade (9-10).

The percentage drop in value for a junk wax card from a BGS 10 to a BGS 9 is pretty hilarious. $773.10 down to $13. If my math is correct, which it may not be, that is a 99.9832% drop in value. I feel like their grading scale is slightly broken.

Just looking at the 4 Sanders cards side by side the PSA label looks worst of all. But I still grade with PSA when I plan on selling for the reason you mentioned. For the record, I sub with HGA when it’s for PC. I love the labels especially the custom ones, if it works for the card. Thanks for another insightful video. You are the best. I’m bummed Topps didn’t include you in the content creator cards. 😝

HGA has some great labels, and their sideways slab is way ahead of what the big companies are doing. They are one of a few smaller companies that I think will survive and continue to grow. My store stopped grading with psa (because they were dickheads who grade badly), and it has barely affected our instore or ebay sales. Its soo much cheaper to grade with a different company that even if the sales price is lower it all balances out.

I am a member of both PSA and SGC. Obviously PSA values are higher but SGC is coming on. I particularly like the fact that SGC offers specials on different cards like the 2023 Topps $9 special that just ended. I see that PSA has taken notice and is offering their own specials like the 2022 or 2023 card grading for $16. I think your analysis is spot on (like usual!) Send older cards in to PSA and modern cards to either SGC or PSA depending on condition and rarity. Thanks for the video!!

When BGS first came out it was outselling PSA. I remember people crossing PSA 10 1986 fleer trying to get BGS 9.5. I was able to send BGS 9’s to cross to PSA 10’s without even cracking them. Crazy how things have changed.

The value of the CSG slabs is right there for the taking. Their slabs are easily the nicest around. I personally don't understand the love for SGC, their slabs are clunky to me. Just my 2 pennies.

I think you start to see the gap close when you look at more “collector” cards rather than the “investor cards” that make up your indices here. I collect a lot of mid 90s to mid 2000s inserts and the psa/sgc gap is around 10-20%. “Investors” pay for labels. Collectors pay for cards

I think one benefit to sending to SGC right now is the 9.5 mint+ grade. It seems to be difficult to get a 10 at Psa right now and the SGC 9.5 is outselling the PSA 9 so for borderline cards it works out better at times. I like both PSA and SGC but for different types of cards.

I'm good with the lower prices I sell my sgc card for, since I get the cards back 9 months to 1.5 years earlier, and it costs less to grade.

Great video! Thanks for the research on this topic. I would love to see how closely the grades match up for the same card over the 4 majors.This would entail sending a card for grading then cracking the slab and sending it off to each of the companies. You would have to do this for several cards to avoid the 'having a bad day' factor, so a high price for data. PSA seems to be the first pick for investors, but I like the look and turn around time of SGC.

My store has dealt with all of the companies, and is always buying random graded cards from customers. And I used to work for a grading company. In my experience psa is the least consistent. Sometimes they grade perfectly, othertimes its 2 grades off. You just never know with them, completely unreliable coin flip. SGC is pretty much always spot on, only issues I have seen with them is not measuring centering correctly. CSG is pretty good at grading, though they are a little lenient. BGS is good with high value cards,lower value they dont pay enough attention and get it wrong more often, but usually within 1 point. Sometimes they miss super obvious stuff, like I just sold a card last week that was a 9.5 surface with massive spots on it.

BGS 10's are rare. PSA give out too many 10's! I have seen some so visually OFF CENTERED but gets a ten! LET'S JUST NOT GRADE!

Agree Rick. Never understood how some PSA 10's can be so clearly off center without even looking closely at the card!? PSA grades are not consistent. Personally, I feel SGC grades more accurately.

On Wall Street they have a saying and that saying goes like this, don't fight the Fed. In the card world the Fed == PSA. In an ideal world I would send all of my cards to CSG because hands down they have the best cases it's not even really a contest crystal clear beautiful label everything is perfect. But there is no justification for sending any card to CSG that you want to resell because it's basically throwing away money at this point. That goes for all of the other companies except for PSA. The other point here is this, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, PSA figured out (or perhaps lucked into) a very very simple grading scale, they figured out early on to ditch half grades and be sure to have enough gem mints as to create a critical mass of 'perfect cards' the rest is history For example, is there anything more maddening then getting a grade of 9.5? That literally is the biggest mistake any of these companies have made at this point, all of them should ditch the 9.5 or even the 8.5 grade, it does nothing but piss off your clients. /endrant

Interesting video as always! Two other important pieces of info it would’ve been helpful to see in grid were: 1. Price to grade card and 2. Gem Rate %. PSA only makes sense to grade with if you Gem it. The PSA price advantage (spread over other grading companies) seems much lower for 9s. My takeaway is buy PSA 9s. Or SGC 10s. Be curious what % of cards get BGS 10 Thanks as always for sharing. And hope you feel better soon-sounds like you’re sick.

The Robinson was $298 in PSA and $250 in a CSG.... given the fact CSG is relatively new, but selling higher then the SGC... wouldn't you say that gives hope to them.... and I think CGC cards are gaining on PSA as well.... what are your thoughts? I personally think CSG has the best slabs and the credibility to back it up

Hey Chris along this topic it would be interesting to see how sgce compares to PSA with the true vintage stuff. Like the 1950s and 60s stuff. I would say that the prices should be a lot closer on that stuff. You could also add in the bvg grading. I believe they sell for significantly less. Anyways it would be another interesting comparison between the companies.

If a company like BGS wants to really close the gap, they'd have to alter their grading scale. Their current 9.5 should be changed to a 10, and their current 10 Pristine should be changed to either: 10+ 10 PLUS 11/10

Well, Ive NEVER graded cards in my 20+ years collecting, BUT I just sent some new Warhammer 40k cards to TAG, they're the only ones who would grade them! I think it's pretty cool they quickly replied to and accommodated my request!

I used to feel the same way only about coins. I had coins in my collection that I wanted authenticated and slabbed to preserve and protect them but I felt like the two major companies were too expensive so I went with a second tier company and I couldn't be happier. If you aren't grading to resell there are better options than the major companies.

I'm a John Smoltz collector and for about 10-12 years only collected BGS graded cards. Then they started to really dry up, I think PSA prices dropping and the ability for them to grade an absolute insane amount of cards every day and month just kind of flooded the market with PSA. That caused me to start looking at PSA. The thing with PSA is a value will be established in the market for a grade and the pop can climb to crazy #'s and the value still maintains. In almost every other brand, the value starts to diminish when the pop count starts rising. Needless to say, I'm now a BGS and PSA collector of Smoltz cards!! LOLOL Funny market. Love the channel!

As for BGS Gem Mint pricing, it kinda makes sense because even tho its "gem mint", the label still reads 9.5(instead of a 10 like other companies). So I guess I can see why the pricing would be the lowest of the 4 companies.

One thing not mentioned, is How long it takes to grade the cards,I can have 4 to 5 orders back from sgc before I even see the one psa order,thats important, I don't sell but you can't sell what you don't have. Like someone said, who's fault is this,get off the psa train. I've bought psa slabs of cards I wanted for my collection at a cheaper price than other companies. If you're willing to sell a card cheaper because of the label, who's the fool there. You wouldn't sell your truck cheaper because of the badge on it.

You say it often in your High Rollers videos, but PSA has the power of the set registry. I for one, really enjoy that aspect of PSA and their certification database is very sleek and easy to use via an app. All of these aspects will keep them on top for long term IMO

This is the reason I find the Beckett possible reshuffle interesting. Essentially a becket prestine sells for multiple's of a PSA 10, but a 9.5 sells for a little above a PSA 9. If they do carve out another grade between gem mint and prestine perhaps those cards would sell for equal to a PSA 10. I would call it a gem mint plus.

I think that is a bummer. But as mainly a vintage collector I buy the card and not the holder as I want the best card I can buy at a reasonable price. If buying SGC or Beckett saves me money, I am in. It is really silly that the holder makes a difference but statistics do not lie.

The reason why you would submit a 1989 Topps Traded Ken Griffey Jr. card to SGC or CSG instead of PSA is pretty simple. Those two companies give 80s/90s era cards (and I'm talking only about junk wax here because of my lack of experience with modern) a fair look and grade them consistently and accurately. Hypothetically, if I were to take ten of the sharpest, cleanest and centered examples of this card and submit them to SGC or CSG, I would expect something like half 10s, a few 9.5s and maybe a 9 or two. Sometimes the grader has a different opinion and that's ok. If I take those same cards and submit them to PSA, I have no idea what to expect at this point. I could get six 9s, two 8s and even a couple crazy grades. I might be lucky enough to get a generous grader who gives out a 10 or two. Sure, those 10s are going to sell for more than the SGC or CSG 10s, but I shouldn't have to rely on luck. If I'm submitting to PSA, I'm burning through a lot more money in the long run chasing a 10, while they're carelessly moving through my cards and rubber stamping them with 9s. I'm not whining that it's too hard to get 10s. I'm saying only that I have lost confidence that PSA's graders are using any consistent standards to return an order with accurate grades. Add in the fact that PSA's customer service and turnaround times are not competitive with the other two companies, at least not for the price, and the decision becomes even easier.

Videos such as this one will change people’s thoughts on buying the label for twice as much. I tend to lean towards buying SGC Slabs because I like the slab and after doing research (watching hundreds of reveal videos) it seems that something is happening at PSA where there are a lot of graders “having a bad day”. I’m sure doing a million cards per month hasn’t helped, but I feel like PSA is a bigger gamble if you want consistency as of late.

OK CHRIS YOUR ADVICE TO ME HAS BEEN GREAT SO FAR HERE'S MY DILEMMA!- OK so I have 29 cards that are all perfect gem mint PSA 10s. These are all modern extremely valuable MODERN SSP. And worth at least $500 each. What I'm considering is send them in to BGS, and put the maximum 9.5 "minimum grade". (meaning they would only crack it and put nothing less than 9.5) however I would still have to pay for each individual card the full price of grading. As we are well aware most INEVITABLY will be cracked and GRADED BGS 9.5 (LOWERING their values) only a few will get BGS gold label 10 (RAISING their values) and maybe one of the 29th ( very unlikely!) Might!,... key world might, get a black label. The total attempted price to do this is going to cost me about $1000. Since I know you are very thorough and breaking down your cost structure, that would be about $34 per card attempting to cross over each. Obviously if I got EVEN 1 black label it would pay for the entire order AND MORE!,..however to be sure I would have to do my research and add up all the BGS 10 Vs. PSA values. Chris I know to give a accurate answer you have to know each exact card. But in general, would YOU send in 29 gem mint modern PSA cards to BGS to try?

Thats a really interesting idea, but honestly I have know idea if that is likely to pan out or not. There is probably a decent chance you up with a net gain, but certainly there is a major risk involved.

I recently got back into collecting and from the research I’ve done, wouldn’t the automated grading be the way to go for grading cards? I believe it’s AGS or something like that. I would think since it would cover every aspect of a card, it might be very difficult to attain a perfect 10 but could be possible. I’m looking to get several recent purchases graded and am heavily leaning towards the automated grading.

Fascinating, troubling, but not surprising. This will continue to be the trend as long as people are willing to deal with PSA's longer wait times and poor customer service while also paying a higher premium for cards in PSA holders. Collectors who just want to add value to cards in their PC probably aren't worried about wait times. Most dealers use PSA to squeeze more profits out of cards they can afford to hold but also use SGC for fast turnaround on cards the want to flip for a quick profit. Bottom line, it seems complicated but its not. Things are worth what someone is willing to pay. Unfortunately, this ship has sailed. PSA has survived many years & many scandals. They aren't going anywhere.

The biggest problem is that people don't do the research to educate themselves on each grading company and the criteria for their grading scale. As long as influencers keep pushing the narrative that PSA is more valuable...those that don't educate themselves will only learn that PSA is more valuable. I can watch video after video where influencers give advice to send their high-value cards to PSA and their vintage to SGC, their thick cards to BGS and their low tier cards to CSG. So, that's what uneducated people do. Whereas those that have actually taken the time to check the grading criteria from the various companies will understand that a Gem Mint grade from each will yield a card that is in very similar condition - so really, one is paying a premium for the plastic holder and label for a PSA 10 compares to the other grading companies. #TheHobbyist

Because they're not PSA. I like SGC as well, but the market always wins, and most want PSA or BGS.

SGC does not grade harder than PSA. Majority of ultra modern cards with a grade less than 8 are in PSA slabs. Its very hard to find cards 2018 and newer graded by BGS and SGC with grades lower than 8. Don't get me wrong, gem mint is not easy in any grade. I'm saying that flaws that make a card less than gem get hit a lot harder by PSA

It just depends on what the card is. If it is for my PC, I go with HGA: cool labels, inexpensive, and quick service. If I'm going for resell value, PSA. I just wish PSA specials weren't always exclusive to Club members.

Overlaying Gem and Pristine rates would be super helpful in understanding how lenient different companies are in giving out 10s (or 9.5s) Also many folks believe PSA has changed their grading scale in recent years, making it much harder to get 10s. At the very least they seem much more inconsistent. So a 10 in a new PSA holder seems to hold a lot more value than a PSA 10 in an older holder. Not sure how to prove any of that with available data though

Its more the idea that certain cards don't get 10s anymore, so if you want a 10 you have to buy a card that was lucky enough to get a 10 in the past. Certain cards like Sue Bird Fleer Ultra has 70 9s and 10 10s. I would chalk it to condition sensitivity, but I saw a recently graded 9 that looked flawless on the PSA website scan

Key factor mentioned... people are literally paying for a label. People make a living cracking the other 3 companies GEM MINTS and re-submitting to PSA... it's just the way the market is. Million dollar question is how do we change that?

Great video. My takeaway from the data...send your cards to PSA to grade and buy cards in the other holders. The problem is when sellers want PSA 10 prices for their SGC/BGS?CSG 10 cards.

@@richardbianco9674 I agree. Problem easy to fix. The seller needs to take the average of the PSA 10 for a card. Then price the other graded 10 to same price. Do not come off that price. Then problem solved. All sell for the same price. So it is more the seller that is causing this problem than the buyer. The buyer always wants the best deal.

It almost seems like one could grade with SGC because their cost and turnaround time is low, and if it ends up being a 10 then turn around and submit to PSA to optimize value. But of course it might not come back a 10.

People are worried about beckett , however I think they have the best appeal at trying to get a Ten . With 10 times the value it would be worth a try at BGS before PSA on big cards .

I only grade w PSA cause thats what the market demands. We have several collectors here who only collect PSA slabs and want to keep their collection unified with only one company. Our local store grades all his stuff w sgc and wonders why his sales are slow... cause the sgc demand isnt there for his stuff. He says people are loving it.. but the data shows otherwise. I only grade vintage w sgc. Everything else goes to psa. CSG HGA and these others who tried getting in dont exist in my world. If someone tries to offer me a slab from those grading companies i will usually pass unless they come down alot for the value. They dont sell well for me at our local shows at all so i dont want to devote resources to them. PSA just sells better. I hate it but thats what the hobby demands.

Considering PSA's upcharges, and how long it takes for them to turn a submission around it kind of makes sense. From a flipping aspect you can miss selling windows, and end up paying more money when it is unexpected for upcharges. Also, time is money, so 3-4 months now, but has been a year till recently vs 2 weeks from other companies makes a big difference, and the 9.5 from other companies makes a big selling difference when gem rates are fairly low. PSA either sells for alot for a 10, and very similar to other companies for a 9 which is way more common. So with the time factor PSA 10's make them very hard to get like the upper 10 grades from other companies. Most of the content made about this doesn't take time into consideration. This is also why I grade mostly with SGC.

So in the BGS 10 price comparison with the other 3 companies, you are just referring to the normal BGS 10(and not the black label)? If that is the case, then damnnnn, I didnt know the BGS 10 is pull that amount of money. I always knew the BGS 10 is more then PSA, but I didnt ever think it would be 7 times more then PSA(maybe the Black Label, but not the normal BGS 10)
