It's funny with CGC cause they are so strict on centering of the card when grading but their own label is off centered

The odd thing is, not all CGC labels are off center… I have a few CGC slabs and none of them are off center. I don’t know why some end up off center while some are perfectly centered… maybe it has something to do with the printer being used to print the labels?

As a long time PSA person Ive started to prefer CGC more. PSA always has a cracked case or a hair trapped in the case whenever I get an order back. And CGC is way stricter on their grades and Ive tested it numerous times. CGC has graded tougher every time. I have PSA 10s from the late 00s that look worse than current PSA and CGC 9s so I feel like the early pokemon psa market is saturated with cards that arent worthy of their grades. Id rather have a tougher grade than easy 9s/10s. I currently have about 200 cards at PSA and about 500 at CGC cant wait for them to come back to papa!
@ealbar1
@ealbar1 3 года назад
100% agree. PSA's quality control has been suffering for a while, even before the recent boom. Combine that with their rather inconsistent grading, and that has just burned me too many times. I have many PSA 10's that definitely wouldn't have gotten a CGC 10 that's for sure. I think that's what makes PSA so much more dominant though, they were easier to get a 10 with compared to BGS, and since everyone wants their stuff to come back 10, they were sent to PSA. This is where the consistency issue comes in. They appear to have recently started to become more strict as a response to this/ some would say pop control, and that is the last thing you want from a grading company. If you sent a card 2 years ago you had a good shot at a 10 with PSA, now you're looking at 8's and 9's. This is also a reason PSA cert numbers in the high 5's and into the 6's are typically going for more because the card inside is probably more deserving of that 10.

Agree with each point. Only comment I'd add is that, recent returns from PSA seem to have really nerfed that easy 10. They are only the most popular because of the fact that everyone sent them their mint cards for basically a guaranteed 10. But they seem to be reacting to that/ some would say pop control, and are now being much more strict. That flip flopping/ inconsistency is the last thing you want in a grading company. It means a 10 with a Cert # in the 3's or 4's might not be deserving of it while a 9 in the high 5's or 6's might have deserved it. This is where both BGS and CGC completely win with their strict consistent grading from the very beginning.

PSA is a good company but it also shows that when a company gets too comfortable when they're at the top, they will go by "if it ain't broken don't fix it" mentality. It's beginning to show in their sometimes sketchy grading. They could do so much, starting with at least tweaking their label. I like the lack of elements on the label, it doesn't take away from the main attraction, which is the card, BUT! The red border and the 90's feeling it gives off is just..boring, somehow. Sometimes "old but good" isn't always the best.

I've been sending my cards to CGC. Mostly because it's a quicker turnaround time and cheaper. I don't really plan to sell any of the cards I've graded, so getting them graded through PSA or BGS ain't worth it to me. Most recent card I graded was a Dreams Come True Lillie (Chinese Extra Battle Day). It got a pretty strong 9.5 (9.5/9.5/10/10) and is probably my favorite card in my collection.

CGC by far has the best case. The ultra-clear plastic they use really shows off the card. Photographing or seeing a CGC encased card is awesome because of the amount of light it lets through. I think PSA and BGS are the clear best grading companies for multiple reasons. I believe at first BGS was most popular with Modern sports cards, but as PSA got more and more busy people started to send their gaming cards to BGS which started to backlog them. Overall BGS to me has the way nicer mint/gem mint label, and I believe BGS is more difficult to get a gem mint grade vs PSA. Though I've heard ppl say PSA is getting more strict now, likely not wanting to swamp the market with 10s. I dont really bother with the other grading companies at the moment.

Super interesting to see the major disconnect in what grading company prominent Poketubers say is the best (PSA) vs what people in the comment section say is the best (CGC) on vids like this or the Top 10 Pokemon one. Most Poketubers have been in the hobby for a while, and therefore their "guy" is PSA and they naturally place them at the top as that's what a majority of their collection is, but the 'new guard' couldn't disagree more. It's like witnessing a shift in power in real time. I mean just look at the comments on this video. Always funny to hear people say "there are 2 main grading companies for Pokemon, PSA and BGS". I think PSA is realllly taking advantage of its customers and I think if they keep This up with upcharges and costing an arm and a leg to submit , as well as blatantly grading cards low for whatever reason, they will slowly lose their top spot in the customers eyes, from a business stand point yes what PSA is doing makes sense but it sucks for us 🤷‍♂️

If a card is graded by PSA in 2017 with the older PSA slabs, is there a difference in value?

Just own one of each grading company for diversification purposes. That's the safest play here. PSA may be the current king of graded cards, but there is no guarantee that that statement will be true in 2031 or 2041. So, just buy them all. That way you're covered for all possible eventualities. If a new player emerges in card grading buy them too.

Hi Jake, I always see people talk about which grading service has the best value but I don't see people people talk about how PSA and CGC charge more for a more expensive card. BGS does not do this, your price at BGS only determines how long it will take to get your cards back and does not reflect the price of the card. Don't know if you made another video covering this already but just something I like to point out. Great video as always!

You mentioned the cost of grading depends on your cards value AFTER grading. But what if you don’t know the cards value; which is why you are getting it graded? Like I opt for the cheapest grading but the card ends up being worth say $500? Do they charge me more to get the card back? Or if I send 25 cards in at the $18/each price, it is what it is once I get them all back?
@TwicebakedJake
@TwicebakedJake Год назад
The value after grading is mainly used for insurance in case of lost or damage. As long as you are being reasonable in your valuation of it then you will not be surcharged for increase value. Unless the value is egregiously difference. But in that case it just means your card is worth significantly more than what thought, which isn't a bad thing either.

PSA is missing the center, corner, edge, and surface labels. BGS has their lettering font too close and small. CGC is near perfect with the big grading number, but it is off center with that 8.

PSA has burned me too many times, at this point im convinced the only reason they're popular is they give out 10s way easier. I spent about $1000 getting 5 cards graded and had 3 cards come back with errors, and one with some plastic debris bouncing around inside the case. Never going with psa again. CGC and BGS slabs/labels are way better looking, better designed and their 10/10 actually means something.

Same! Received several cards with fuzz, hair or other debris in the case not cool at all. I continue to grade with them solely bc unfortunately the re-sale value is the best however I think BGS and CGC are much more professional and the fact they offer sub-grades and grade tougher means they stand behind their grades and also there is no confusion as to why what got what!

Hey Jake! I’ve been following the hobby for a while and wanted to grade a few cards. Just wondering, for anyone to answer, which grading service should I use to get around 10-12 cards graded with each being $50+? I’m considering TGA because of their $20 per card service.
