I'd had to choose between the two, and went with the Deluge. Haven't had any regrets. It's a deep, powerful, and evolving piece of gear. I don't think it's for everyone, since it's so expensive, but for what it does, there's nothing like it.

awesome video! i love seeing how much you improve with each video! I've just picked up the OP-1 a couple of weeks ago now and your description of the person who the OP-1 is for is SPOT ON description of where i am right now. I've spent the last years buying and selling gear, making music, developing a studio and getting very distracted of the true end goal of making music really is: "Having fun and being creative" at the end of 2020 i realized that this was bringing me a lot of anxiety and stress and unnecessary pressure to perform and in the end what was supposed to be a fun creative hobby ended up being a toxic stress filled guilt trip. SO i decided to start selling all the gear that didn't bring me pure joy regardless of the technical specs and started replacing them with "toys" that would be much more fun to use (nanoloop FM, op-Z, op-1, M8 tracker (preordered), model cycles) i've don't the whole "big production workflow" thing, had big synths and professional gear and realized that it wasn't for me. and while sure the end result on OP-1 like you said isn't going to be the best one out there the process itself is the most fun and most rewarding. maybe one day in the future i might pick up as well the deluge because it does seem interesting but that screen/grid interface is not for me. maybe if they make a deluge 2.0 with a big screen like you said i would consider it. really enjoyed your video! keep it up you're doing great stuff

Very well said and spot on summary. I have had both since they were first released but find that while my Deluge gets used more and more the OP1 is gathering dust (same as my RC202) and I've decided to sell it for the reasons you give in your summary - combined with other hardware synths the Deluge is an amazing composition tool. The OP1 is great, but I find it harder to use than the Deluge, even with the Deluge's "display".

Wonderful review and I think spot on about which instrument fits you in terms of personality and aims in music production. I would add as a Deluge user that its not a static instrument as OP-1 is. The Firmware updates that keep rolling out from Sythstrom dont just fix bugs (which there are very few) thay add major functionality and reflect the very open architecture of the instrument its self. I hate to say it but I think if you look at pure value and can get over the screen, Deluge is maybe the best piece of electronic music gear for the price in the known universe at the moment, It really can do that much.
@cardboardmusic
@cardboardmusic 3 года назад
I'm sure you know this already, but one thing to add to the Deluge's list is the community. There's a really active Deluge (Synthstrom) community who post videos, help people out on problems and make suggestions, tips and more - ex: there's a fun live channel here on YT, where you can get inspired. And, I should add that the Synthstrom team are always very helpful if you have any questions or problems.

I love my deluge and I think it is incredible as a standalone unit. though I have other synths, i don't find myself reaching for them, as I can get pretty much any sound I want out of the deluge. I have yet to challenge the instrument's polyphony limit in such a way that a tweak in the setting of one track or another cannot remedy. Don't get me wrong-- I would LOVE an OP-1-- but I'm afraid it would suffer the same neglect as my other synths do, now that I have a deluge. That's my take on it.

Nice comparison. What I'd like to add to Deluge's list of features is multi-samples that make my analog synths portable. After I have some of my synths sounds as samples and playable in Deluge, I can hear what they sound like and when I'm back at home, I can hook the synths via midi to Deluge and use the sounds from the synths.

Watching multiple videos of people making music on either device got me interested in both. The OP-1 first, but the price put me off, plus I wasn't sure I grokked the workflow. Seeing the Deluge, though, showed me the main difference: being audio-based the OP-1 is oriented to making and printing a track then you move on to the next track. The Deluge lets you come back to a track and fiddle with the sound long after you've laid it down. The latter is much more how I work. (Plus the Deluge was a lot cheaper.)

Great video. I like your thinking and how you express your thoughts. I'm not going to buy a groovebox atm as I'm focused on making a complete synth system in eurorack. What I mean by complete is a music making and and performing setup in two cases. I'm almost there but need a few more utilities and the second case. I also got two synths and an electric piano that has been collecting dust since I started with modules so no point really for me to think to much about this now. Saying that. At some point I will probably get a groovebox. As I have no experience with making music on a computer out of these two the Deluge looks more tempting. This because I know I would learn, and would have to learn a lot in order to use it. The OP-1 looks like loads of fun but a bit toy like maybe for the price. The Digitone is also something I might consider but I somehow got the impression that the Deluge is a bit more hands on, that you don't end up missing this or that function and that it is less menudivy. Here are two other different and not that well known grooveboxes that caught my eyes: It's fun to watch the difference between the web pages for these two companies. The main difference is the kind of music you want to do. If you are more a tracker / groove box guy and like electronica music with quick fat sounds, Deluge is the best. If you are a musician performer, you like to experiment with weird organic sounds or you compose lofi ambient things, the op1 is crazy. You have a keyboard, a microphone, a radio, weird synths or effects, a very original workflow with the tape recorder (once you get it, it is damn fast to create), you have also an accelerometer, very original lfos..... in my opinion, it is not designed to produce a final track, I mix my layers on Ableton Live, it sounds really great.

Deluge sounds like crap. There's no way around that, unfortunately. Yes, it's absolutely true that they don't have the resources to pay for a great swath of great presets, but there's just something "digital" about the raw sound no matter what you do. Having said that, I still love my deluge, I just don't use the internal synth engine much. Awesome dawless hub and isolated sketch pad.

@@MidlifeSynthesist Many, many, many, ha! Arturia Keystep pro and a FaderFox EC4 do the heavy lifting. In app terms: AUM, Cubasis or Drambo glues everything; stuff like Fugue Machine, Zoa, Atom 2, Piano motif, ChordJam provide inspirational input for further mangling. A MIDIhub messes with notes algorithmically, or maybe I'll throw things through the ...Bud apps, Rozetta, Mozaic or other MIDI pipeline tools. Animoog Z, Synthmaster (1 and 2), Pure Piano, Mersenne, Lagrange, KQ Dixie and other synths produce some noise. Too many FX apps to mention. Focusrite audio interfaces. Recently I've been using Bitwig on the Mac as well and loving the modulate-everything world it offers. This is very much the edited highlight list of the apps that crowd my iPad. Even with all this software GAS I'm well south of the price of either the Deluge or OP-1 (given that I have an iPad or two for many other purposes - iOS app dev, general office machine, content consumption, etc). And the controllers provide the haptic side that people often bemoan. So for me it's reached the point where I can access my version of music joy on something I have in the house anyway. And the variety of the app world means it's an ever-changing world of joy. And it doesn't take up as much space :). For a low-talent middle-aged ambient noodling knob-twirler like me, I think iPad+some physical devices is a viable platform that combines the fun of the OP-1 (with the correct choice of apps) with the portable DAWness of the Deluge (albeit with some accessibility issues since I don't know of a 16x8 button controller for the iPad). And none of this is an argument against the OP-1 and Deluge - like I say, I love them both and enjoy using them. But I reach for the iPad more often, it's with me all the time, and its evolving apps are keeping it interesting. Long may the diverse options continue: physical instruments, software, DAWs, mixers, synths, trackers, Deluges, OP-1s and all the rest. We're living in a golden age.

Not a simple device for a 30 minutes session but to create something from A to Z (except MIX / Mastering) for weeks outside my studio ... I just bought the OP-Z because i'm looking for this good "travel music machine". I'm testing it since two days now and i'm kind of addicted to this little thing (the very portable size of the OP-Z is a big plus !)... I have about a month to master it and made my mind. But, i'm looking for the Deluge too ! I think it will fit better with what i do but i can't "test it" and send it back.

Flexibility and power of a computer DAW is leagues above. But hands on usability of something like the Deluge is extremely nice. I really like the idea of having a matrix in front of you that you can touch. I should mention it also really depends on the kind of music. Can’t do that much with these machines if you play guitar. A computer and an audio interface allows you to do almost anything.

As an OP-1 owner, I'd recommend using a Deluge or MPC instead. :P The OP-1 workflow just doesn't jive with me, for a bunch of different reasons. It's fun, but it's incredibly quirky and has a really low ceiling.

@@stephenmurphywilson7294 For around the same price as an OP-1, you could get an Akai Force instead. It's waaay more powerful, and is good at making complete songs instead of just quick sketches. It has the features and workflow I actually need, instead of just some stuff I once thought I wanted. It's basically what the Ableton Push 3 would be if it existed. It's nice working with clips, scenes, and an arranger without having to use a computer. I've spent years looking for the right hardware, and with a Force I feel like I finally found it. YMMV, but I'd feel negligent if I didn't at least mention it.

Although I do enjoy sound design and getting lost in grooves and beats, it's all about putting together a whole piece of work that tells a story and pulls the listener with it. The courier will be delivering my Deluge in a day or two... Thanks for another great video!

How do you find the synths and effects on the deluge compared to the modern MPC range? I have a deluge and love many aspects of it, but find it frustrating that you are largely locked into the box with only one pair of audio outs, I find the synths very basic compared to a lot of the competition and that would be ok if there was a substantial set of effects to beef them up but there isn't. (I know you can apply external effects and resample back in etc. but not the most immediate way to work)

MPC Live 2 is the best thing on the market by a landslide but the Deluge is great for sketching out ideas and just getting lost in the fun of making music. Plus it's beautiful.

Nice! To sum it up, I would say that the OP-Z is quite limited (like the OP1) in terms of synth engines and it def shines brighter as a "happy accidents" machine, whereas the Deluge is just an awesome all-in-one box that allows me to design synths, drums on the fly and edit tracks with the arranger mode. I cannot dismiss the fact that the OP-Z has a strong sequencer, with iterations and probability, and some awesome ideas that, afaik, are more "performance" oriented, such as the lights (through a dmx interface) and video/photo sequencer (if you're into that, I strongly suggest you take a look at Cuckoo's videos on the creation of visuals for the OP-Z: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UJRAbIQamnQ.html). There's also the issue of limited polyphony, and the fact that you have to spend another 130€ to get a CV/MIDI module to get it to communicate better with other synths and the POs is a bit of a bummer. Here are a few tracks I made with the OPZ, if you're interested: soundcloud.com/paul-kapelusz/tracks TL;DR The OP-Z is fun to play with but don't expect it to be as "standalone" as the Deluge. Hope this helps!
@LunaticDandy

@@Wladyslas Thanks for your reply ! I came to the same conclusion after hours with the OP-Z. In terms of workflow, I think having both is the best. The OP-Z for its "fast creativity", its live capability, its size and the Deluge to go further. Depending on the situation, we take one or the other or both! So, I ordered the Deluge ^^ ... Because I'm sure these two machines goes well together ! Correct me if i'm wrong. PS: I love your songs. Desde and ManonIsOk are my favorites ;)

Deluge has been out a while now, am thinking of getting one as I've moved away from MS Windows/Cubase on to Linux/Bitwig and I'm suffering a bit from workflow and plugin loss. It might help if I wrench myself back into hardware synth / seq as opposed to a software daw and mini keyboard. As of Summer 2021, deluge still appears to be non-existent in the 2nd hand market here in the UK. Can I assume that it's still considered top drawer in Summer 2021? Anything else like it on the horizon, or an upgrade due? If anyone wants an upgraded Deluge, just wait until I've bought one, because something new is BOUND to come out soon after that. I did make a first try with the Zoom ARQ AR-48 flying saucer sequencer that I got incredibly cheaply in a sale, but I found it incredibly confusing to use. I also have an old Yamaha QY-10.
