Dr. Jan Olbrecht talks about why running is so different from swimming. Swimming always involves working in a low resistance environment, so it is difficult to achieve high muscle loads or tension. Track and field sports like running place much higher loads on the muscles due to running against gravity. As a result, swimmers can train with less rest between sets compared to track athletes. While resistance devices can add some tension for swimmers, their impact is small relative to even easy running. Overall, the higher muscle loads in track require different training strategies than in swimming.
