This video compares two plug-ins that emulate the Pultec EQP-1A equalizer - the NoiseAsh Rule Tec EQ1A and the Waves PuigTec EQP-1A. Check out the Audio Masterclass Music Production and Sound Engineering Course at bit.ly/3W3tpKo
The question addressed here is not whether they sound like the original Pultec EQP-1A, but whether they sound the same as each other. With audio demonstrations, this question is answered clearly.

Wow that is the most realistic robot i've ever seen. I almost believed it was a real person but the lack of blinking gave it away Jk. I prefer the NoiseAsh one myself. Feels more natural in the tests i've done.

Ruletec sounds nicer, but the Waves is a great version as well. I use the Ruletec for production, and the Waves in vocal recordings.

A tip, I own the majority of UAD`s plugins, and, I seldom use any of them. För example, this NoiseAsh plugin is so much beter than the UAD version. But the great thing with Apollo (I don't know which version you have) you can run more plugins on your computer. So when the computer has a hard time driving all plugins I run some UAD plugins, like Oxford EQ, EMT140, and so on. I think is their best one is API Vision.

I think Waves has modeled JJ Puigs peronal EQP-1A. Would be cool to hear JJP:s and the waves plugin in a shootout

waves puigtec always seemed to me a digitally precise eq with pultec workflow rather than a truly analogue emulation, the other brand (I've used it last day in a studio owned by a friend of mine reason I've found your video) seems to own a more analogue behaviour compared to puigtec, switchting 1:1 from both like you do the waves seems making the sound tinier

The NOISEASH works better. I just bought them. I own the Waves too though.

I like the NoiseAsh version over the Waves. Imho its even better than the UAD version. Regarding NoiseAsh I ended up getting all three Pultec variants. All really, really sound nice. So far my favorite Pultec plugin is the one by Apogee version. Apogee's is so good. They are actually the only company endorsed by Pultec. NoiseAsh is definitely a close second, but Apogee's high-end is sweeter as is the natural distortion you can achieve.

Actually, I’m terms of analog “realism”, and particularly if you’re inserting EQP’s on various tracks (or sub busses), it might not be a bad idea to have a few different Pultec VST’s from different manufacturers to choose from; (Acustica, Waves, Softube, UA, Apogee, T-Racks, etc)... and here’s why: It wasn’t uncommon to have sonic differences between two of the exact same hardware models with the original Pultecs...even with both having the same exact settings. (And, I’m not referring to comparison of a tube Pultec with a solid state Pultec, but two of the exact same EQP1-A models). Factors might be the age of the units, or the wear of moving parts like the rotary pots, and how much “play” may have developed in them over time as they were used; also things like the age and condition of the tubes, along with the rest of the circuitry, etc. I’m not implying that these things necessarily made one Pultec sound “better” than another... just different. Sometimes these differences were slight, sometimes much more noticeable. So, by using different Pultec plug versions from different manufacturers, (with each being modeled on different HW Pultecs that each company used as their source) it could help to alleviate having the “same” sonic characteristics of using just one Pultec VST from just one company, and could give you some of that “drift” that often occurred between two HW units of the exact same model numbers. This was, at least in part, one of the things that helped to create the “magic” of the analog sound. These differences could be said for other plugs/hardware as well... The same could be said for two 1176’s, or LA2’s, or U47 mics...or even different channels on the same console. Using different VST’s might help add more character/vibe/depth to the mix because of the differences in contrast. Anyhooo... just something to think about. FWIW 😊

There is another emulation of the EQP 1A by Red rock. I wish this had been included although it may not have been around at the time when this vid was made.

I use the eqp for warmth not treble. I feel the Waves version does warmth better than a lot of others.

Good Job! Thank You What is for you the best emulation of this pultec? Hardware and software? Personally I have some opinions on the material that I know: The Hardware Klark teknik lacks a little consistency in the Low end and its treble is too bright and too high in frequency. I also have the Waves soft which is too stuck in the bass. It's too muddy. I would like to know what is your opinion on other software emulations like the Purple series from Acustica, but also on hardware like Stam Audio, Pro Replicas, AML or Warm Audio? thanks again

That's a good question but I would need to have all the software and hardware available simultaneously to give a reliable answer. That would be a big project, but I'll keep it in mind for a possible future video. DM
