I liked the voice acting... 😶 Moustache Girl was annoying, yet very enthusiastic. Just like an energetic girl would be. Also that irish bird was pretty fun to listen to.
I thought it was cheesy but in the way that it really fits the game. I feel part of the annoyance of Mustache Girl was also on purpose since, ya know, maim villain. There were a few times it was annoying, namely "right as he was about to*_ sNEEZE!"_* but almost all the rest executed wonderfully.
Do you know why I hate Undertale? Because it's the best game ever made. Its graphics look like they were drawn by a 4 year-old, with the talent of Pablo Picasso in his prime...Which is what I would have said if I liked the graphics, which I do...not. Narratively this game is a paragon of interactive storytelling, every choice you make weighs on your conscience because every connection you make with the characters feels organic. And that's why I'm giving this game a five out of five...billion, it fucking sucks
As someone who never really kept track of this game over the past few years, never saw much gameplay, hardly acknowledged its existence, and didn't even know what it was about. And despite being someone who has been obsessed with getting Yooka-Laylee for YEARS now (Waiting on the Switch version) to the point where I'm checking multiple times a day on the Switch port, you managed to sell me on putting A Hat in Time as higher priority than Yooka-Laylee in under 10 minutes. I'm looking forward to buying it as soon as I can!
I have somehow managed to hear nothing about this game before watching this video, and I realize now that it's an actual fucking crime that this isn't plastered everywhere for all to see
I liked the voice acting, but yeah, it doesn't work as well when paired with the speech bubbles. I'm used to reading the words as they appear on screen, but the voice actors were so focused on _acting_ they would read their lines super slow in comparison, so whenever I watch a playthough of this game I always have to wait for the character to finish dramatically doing their Oscar-winning voice performance after having already finished reading their speech bubble a full minute ago. I didn't know about the mumble badge though, that's nice to know about, although it would still trade off some of the funnier deliveries, like Snatcher's "That can't count right??" and of course, the Conductor's infamous "MIEEERRRDEERRR!!!!!". Also, that bit about the importance of moments in this game and Earthbound (one of my absolute favorite games) perfectly encapsulated the reason why I love games like this so much, in a way that I had trouble describing beyond "quirky".
This game isn't a full 10/10 because it didn't have a multi million dollar budget for graphics. If the game looked closer to WWHD level of polish it'd be a 10/10.
Jeff Jefferson the game has real bugs that hinder gameplay such as a feedback delay, certain triggers not activating occassionally, and the camera getting janky. It also needs to be said that the game doesn't look as good as it could. Lighting is weird, facial models are legitimately cheap looking and texture work is spotty and flat. I agree with it being a 9/10, probably an 8/10 if I'm being completely honest, but the game is such a sincere labor of love and was developed with a budget literally a small fraction of what most developers get that I'm willing to go easy on A Hat in Time.
Wow this video was great, it had that positive vibe with all of the jokes and editing you put into this. Keep doing reviews and videos like this and never change.
I'm actually really liking your reviews. And now I want to get a Hat in Time. I remember seeing it a long time ago and being interested, but I never heard from it again. You have given me the gift Khonjin. f
It's been years since anything got me as hyped for a game as this review. I played it a few months ago and the hype was real (the voice acting was actually good). Dig the earnest enthusiasm of this review, and the clear effort put into making it.
the timing of this video is beautiful, i first saw NateWantsToBattle play this game when it was in its early phases of development and at the time i had no job nor the money to try it out while it was in its early stages. now that i'm older and have a few dollars to throw i can actually buy it and you bringing light to the game made me remember it. i now go to steam to see if it is on there and it tells me the game will be available in less than an hour so thank you khonjin, i will have a lot of fun with the game
When I first saw this game a looong time ago, I thought it looked really good. But I didn't expect it to blow up in popularity by its release, I just thought it looked good. Now... I can safely say I must start saving for it. I'm glad that 2017 has shown to be a phenomenal year for games.
Ok, ok, ok, ok I get it if you love the games graphics, gameplay, story and all But if you try to disrespect, the beautiful voice of the conductor and snatcher
I agree with pretty much all of this, except for the voice part. There's some great stand-out performances in the game, like Snatcher, Disco Penguin and Crows. Others like Mafia, Conductor or random NPCs are fine, and just few like Moustache Kid and penguin mobs are actually bad. It's worth keeping the voices on, especially since the Mumbler doesn't really do the Banjo Kazooie thing as was advertized.
+Pekka Luhtala truthfully I didn't think the mafia goons were that bad but (assuming snatcher is the ghost character) holy shit he was one of the worst offenders. DJ Grooves isn't consistently miserable but he has way too many terrible moments (the boss fights a good example) I will say the crows were definitely my favorite of any of the characters voice wise. Everyone else falls into this very weak mediocrity.
Personally the only voice actor I outright disliked was Mustache girls. I especially loved the voice performance by Yungtown for Snatcher (AKA the fucking curse ghost from Paper Mario)
I remember playing the beta being like "No, that can't be the final voice acting quality!" It was, I see. Still buying it though, the game is super fun!
