Honestly, when it comes to the complaints against RPG, the Mario and Luigi games do a better job of covering those flaws than TTYD (cough cough backtracking cough).
This game sticks very close to a traditional rpg (no crazy dodges and Bro attacks) and has the badge system which covers a lot of normal flaws it would have (I do love both games but TTYD does it better as a more traditional Rpg)
So I watched this and the Hat in Time video.... I'm so shocked these were some of the funniest and proper analysis videos I've seen in years. I'll sub if you ever do more
Correction: Only people who remember the original will remember the original. Don't talk like BuzzFeed. It's disgusting. But yes, the first game is amazing and a classic and one of my favorite games ever. Just don't fucking talk like BuzzFeed. Makes you sound like an idiot.
What's the music Khonjin uses for his rant sections of these videos (like when he talks about why RPGs are bad)? It often plays in my mind when I'm thinking about something I don't like, lol
I never used Tasty Tonic once in my numerous playthroughs (NOT ONCE), and I don't remember the last time I had to go back the the Elder Puni to call back those little idiots.
They are not brothers, but they've been friends for a long time, and at least the Return of Jaffar joke is something that Khonjin picked up from Dunkey. He said this in a stream that you can find on Khonjin Vault (I think it's the first video there). And you can hear Khonjin in Dunkeys video "Smash Forever".
i hated twilight town and creepy steeple way more than the great tree because of the sheer toughness of the enemies you have to fight while backtracking (with only one partner after getting the rest jacked by a ghost)
I liked the first Bravely Default because of its gameplay. It was fast, interesting, satisfying and unique. I consider it like the Bloodborne of Square Enix if that makes sense. I'm not sure about Bravely Second tho I haven't played it yet.
Isaac Argesmith it basically means being a black sheep. Bloodborne had familiar themes and mechanics from previous souls games but had enough originality to set it apart. The same goes with Bravely default. It has themes and mechanics from previous Final fantasy games but has a whole bunch of new stuff in it.
It feels like 70% of your RPG complaints only apply to JRPGs. Sure, a lot of RPGs fall into the trap where you don't feel like you're accomplishing anything because everything stays just as strong forever, but in many of them, as you level you begin learning new skills, new ways to deal with enemies, new ways to assist the other members of your party. It's not power that increases, but your ability and the opportunity to strategize more. There's still a place for RPGs when done right, which is why games like Tyranny, Pillars, and Divinity are so popular nowadays. Or pokemon, or dragon quest. I don't really think the genre is as dated as you do, just it needs to keep up with the modern day while keeping the basics of what makes these games fun.
If you were to name the top 5, top ten or even top 20 RPGs, they would mostly be JRPGs. Japan has a monopoly on RPG games. And don't act like other RPGs don't follow these tropes. Grinding is a major part of RPGs, random encounters are in almost all RPGs everywhere, it's almost impossible to name an RPG that doesn't have more than 3 digits, stat weapons are in pretty much every game today, the antidote is in every game since the beginning of time, and backtracking is always pointless.
Jason Skywalker yeah no, the top ten RPGs would probably only have one or two JRPGs. Games like Baldurs Gate, Pillars of Eternity, Neverwinter Nights, classic Fallouts, these games don't require you to grind, as long as you don't avoid literally every EXP gaining moment. A lot of these games don't have random encounters, and if they do they make sense and happen rarely. It seems like you have a very limited understanding of the genre honestly.
All of your points on old RPG's are true, and that stuff with the numbers was one if the reasons I loved the original Paper Mario. By the way, what do you think of the Mario & Luigi RPG games?
I love RPG's (not the early ones tho), but I'm not gonna argue against the points you made. Though I highly, HIGHLY recommend you play Xenoblade Chronicles. It is my favorite game of all time, and it's a very different type of JRPG.
I don’t care about Pokémon, how does anyone enjoy spamming a and how much critical hits can break battles for no reasons. At least in other games, you can avoid critical hits, but in an rpg like Pokémon, you have to take it.
Man, holy shit, don't hype it up too much. Gawd you remind me of myself when I play a game. I would hype the shit out of it and then now like 3 years later I realize it was nowhere as good as I hoped it up to be
pokemon has infinite item space in gen 4 and on. i even think gen 3 has infinite items if i remember right. also antidotes are totally useless because pokemon centers exists and in other games hotels exist. only full heals will ever be your status item besides full restores.
I'm fine with turn based combat if the game: didn't have the budget for something else and makes up for it, is old as fuuuck, it's actually a thing you need to strategically think about or it's sensually appealing. And the animations are skipable or fucking instant I don't want that 30 second shit. Play it once the first time or never
I generally agree with your critique of RPGs, except when it comes to Epic Battle Fantasy 3/4. No random encounters, no pointless backtracking + helpful teleportation cats for ease of travel, each of the weapons are unique and upgradable so none become obsolete as the game progresses but rather each weapon allows a different strategy, the stats are well-balanced and at the backend of the game so that the average player need not concern themselves with them, and while level grinding is an option it is never necessary to beat the game, given you have enough skill. Okay, advertisement over.
