Do you practice comping? And how do you work on it? For me, Comping is really fun because it is about playing together with other people both the soloist and the rest of the rhythm section.
The most overlooked part of comping is being able to convey and feel the groove, we always talk about the voicings and the rhythms. Maybe it is also the most difficult, but in this video I want to show you how to train your fingers, your groove and your ears to comp better.
The biggest part of my working life is comping for other people so besides the fact that I find it fun it is also a huge part of my income and something I spend a lot of my time doing. Hopefully I can help you develop you comping skills a bit.

My ensemble leader is a pianist, and he said that listening to recordings is key. He is a fan of separating things when practicing. For example, as a pure rhythm exercise, he would listen to Oscar Petersen, and copy his rhythm...and push any keys on the piano...or close the piano lid and "play" the rhythm on the piano lid. Then, he would practice voicings....then lastly, he would combine voicings with the rhythms he learned. We can do the same on guitar, practice rhythm in isolation of chords by muting the strings or playing one chord, then we can check out voicings, then we can combine rhythm with voicings.

I guess you can, probably it is just as useful to just listen and try to song the rhythms and then later try to play what you sing rhythmically? 🙂

Dynamite lesson Jens! I think that the most important part of this video is how the importance of comping is emphasized by stating that it's what (jazz) guitarists do most of the time. I've met too many guitarists who are decent soloists but their comping is subpar. Usually, because they brush it off as an afterthought or something that doesn't need serious practice.

I play every Sunday in a jazz brunch open jam. The focus is on improvisation and in order for it to work the most important instrument is the ear. Staying out of the way, keeping the groove going, listening to what is being played by the rest of the musicians and soloist and accompanying as part of a conversation. The format is challenging, the band is forgiving and it is a wonderful way to learn. Oh and watching your videos... 😎

These are great lessons. Comping is my favorite thing as it makes me part of the rhythm section and can be as creative as soloing. I guess I tend to relate everything to the major scale that the chord I'm playing is from so the notes from the C scale can be added as melody to a G7 for example. There's also the chord movement of building a chord from the 3,5,and 7 of the chord you're on all from the diatonic chord scale. - G7 to Bbm7b5 to Dm7 to Fmaj7 and back to G. I play mostly in the blues so the changes are easy. Not sure this is correct but it seems to work. Thanks for everything Jens!!!!!

As always, great segment, Jens. It's a great topic to tackle. I think an important part of this is knowing the changes really well! Why? Because, being part of the rhythm section, it's important to know your part. In a duo scenario with a vocalist, the guitarist is going to have more work to do -- you've got to keep everything moving. As you add bass and drums, it gives the guitarist more room to *play less* and be more thoughtful about how to approach it. When you add the piano in, it becomes necessary to have a good understanding of what they will be doing and what their preferences are. For example, what substitutions do they prefer? It had better influence your choices, so you don't unintentionally introduce dissonance which takes attention away from the soloist. It's a practical approach to arrangement, in my opinion... and your ears are your guide. I think about all of the different variations I might encounter and do at least a run through the tune from that perspective. You may never play that again, but at least you've invested some time in that strategy to get your ears, fingers and brain (in that order, mostly :-P) properly aligned. Thanks for taking this one on. Love your comments!
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Thanks Ken! I also like to think of it as On-the-Spot arranging, that's a really good description. The concert I played here in Gdansk yesterday also had some moments where we could just look at each other and follow the music together even though I had never met or playd with the rhythm section 🙂

Hi Jens, to me comping over records is very useful, and it's what recreates better the actual playing situation. Of course, before that one has to master chords, inversions, voicings and so forth, and train with a metronome the way you show in the video, but I recommend playing over records, if I can throw in my my two cents. Thanks for the topic.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Certainly comping with records can be good, though having the track and the groove inside is actually better practiced by working with a metronome and recording yourself in my opinion
@giampierogiorgianni9167
@giampierogiorgianni9167 6 лет назад
I think the metronome practice is preliminary to playing over the recordings. If I practice with the metronome, I build a solid groove and become familiar with the changes, but when I play over a record I actually have a soloist to comp, and, the way I see it, my comping adapts to the way the soloist is playing. I'm not talking about comping over a backing track, when I say record I'm talking about an actual album.

Hi jens. Can you please talk a bit about "suspended" chords and being in deep with it. We already know how to construct these kind of chords but how to use them musically. For example, Frank gambale uses it a lot. But how to use them .... i don't know if you understand what i wanna say :)
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Suspended chords are using the same scale as the non suspended chords most of the time, and you can substitute them for dom7th chords and also min7 chords: Gsus4 instead of Dm7. There isn't much else to say. I guess Frank uses them in his compositions, but that is then only relevant for his music, right? Does that help?

Hi, good day. Comping is really a tough job. One has to be familiar with different chord progressions, different rhythm patterns, well trained ears. Prediction of popular arpeggios. Quick determination of the chord structure that will suite the lick on the run. I don’t remember, whether you have covered difficult rhythm patterns in your lessons or not. Better if you can ......

Thank you Vasili! I don't think you have to try transcribe or know exactly what is being played when comping, just listen and try to play through the changes without getting ing the way :) I didn't make a lesson on complicate rhythms,but I did do this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-biKfs6BOCws.html

My guitar teacher once told me to think that "comping" doesn't just mean "accompanying" the soloist; it also means "complementing" the soloist; listening to and reacting to what's going on in the solo (if only to keep out of the way). Would you adjust any of your comping if the guitar is the only rhythm instrument (e.g. a two guitar duo)?

My tip for transcribing chords: Find the top note, find the bottom note, find the notes in the middle that give it the same colour. It also helps if you know where they are in the tune so you can use that for clues.

I just wonder about the metronome If we put them old days cats, on a DAW and see the tempo. That fluctuates right? They have bad timin? Sure id say hell no . Louis said "swing is to put the notes in th right place" i think So i just dont understand why the metronome . Seems like the swing and groove was an add on from this perspective. And not the driving motion behind why and how of tempo shuffles and breath of the thing
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Год назад
If that works for you then that's fine. Good time is not about being a machine, it is about being together in the right way. I know more people with good time that use a metronome, in fact, I don't think I know anyone with good time who never practices with a metronome, and if you ask people around you then you will see the same thing.
