Universal Studios Hollywood invites guests to celebrate the Studio Tour’s 60th anniversary from April 26 through August 11, 2024.
In 1964, Universal City Studios welcomed tourists to experience Hollywood moviemaking firsthand. With their ruffled awnings, iconic red and white Glamor Trams took tourists through the studio backlot to witness Universal movie and TV productions. These tours, held five times daily from Monday to Friday, lasted just over two hours.
Over the past 60 years, the Studio Tour has evolved into a world-renowned attraction, visited by over 200 million guests. As part of Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Destinations & Experiences’ (UDX) global theme parks portfolio, the Studio Tour celebrates this milestone with guests old and new.
The 60th anniversary celebration will feature several iconic red and white candy-striped Glamour Trams. Guests can step off the tram onto a legendary movie set with an original, fully restored 1964 vintage Glamour Tram. The area will provide additional photo opportunities, including a giant King Kong backdrop and the original hanging Jaws shark.
Highlights of the celebration include the reimagined “Earthquake-The Big One” attraction, which debuted in 1989. This attraction has been renovated and will feature contemporary technology and aesthetics. Guests will also visit Courthouse Square, where scenes from Back to the Future were filmed, and see an original time machine picture car and a nearby Doc Brown character.
As the Studio Tour navigates the historic backlot, guests will encounter the 1976 Runaway Train's temporary return and moments of nostalgia shown on the tram’s monitors.
Universal Studios Hollywood will partner with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Hollywood Sign Trust to commemorate Hollywood's glamorous past. The first-ever original replica of the Hollywood Sign will be situated on the studio backlot, allowing guests to take photos and social media posts with the iconic landmark.
The Studio Tour has evolved over the decades, providing remarkable access to production sets on a genuine studio backlot. The once two-hour Glamor Trams have been replaced with a 60-minute experience, enhanced with advanced technology. The Studio Tour is also transitioning its fleet of 21 diesel-hydraulic engines to electric trams to reduce carbon emissions and improve the guest experience.
