For anyone having trouble with setting up all the textures, the script "V-RayMtl Converter 3" works like a charm. But for anyone who cannot get the script, you can also just make a material library for yourself that you start your project with. Set 3 different material presets, one for each input type. Just drag them out from your library instead of the regular vray bitmap whenever you make a new material. - thank you for this very helpful video!

Idk if enyone noticed when u give grey color to object (lets say a white wall with value of 220 220 220) with vraycolor map and set it to srgb space it becomes blueish...i know it has something with white point in ACESCG...But when I put image trough vraybitmap map with the same color value as in vraycolor map it is normal there is no blueish tint in render...it is all normal if you set rgb primaries to none...then its ok. Every other color is ok with srgb primeries, it only happens with grayscale...does someone have a tip on how to solve this?

Doesn't the Filmic tone mapping layer in VFB do the same thing (controlling highlights and color saturation)? Also, you can still retain the whole color and lighting range (beyond sRGB) if you save your render in 16 or 32 bit EXR. Then you can do as much color correction as you like without colors and lighting breaking down. As you showed in your first example, your sRGB output can look the same without using the ACES workflow if you add a Filmic tone mapping layer. Or am I missing something?

In most biased renders sampling is derived from amount of light and while you CAN render in linear and then color correct the finel image, under the hood stuff does not account for post effects, so you can have artifacts in overlit and underlit zones that only become apparent after CC.

Nice vid, I've purchased your course and I'm finding it a really good option. But let me ask you one question. When you compare the render results in ACES vs RGB, you mention the difference between the highlight burns and how ACES handles this overexposed areas in a much more reliable and correct visual way. But, couldn't you get the exact same result in RGB just by adding an Exposure control in the VFB and reducing the Highlight Burn to 0.1 for example? That's the way I'm currently working. After that I add a LUT and the image tends to get the exact same appearence. Thx! +1
@davidslachta
@davidslachta Год назад
That's something I wonder about too. 10 or 15 years ago, everybody was working with Exponential Color mapping, which basically compressed the highlights and made sure there weren't any overexposed areas. This is exactly what the low Highlight Burn value does today. But anyways, those 10 years ago, everybody was like Ahhh forget about exponential, you have to go linear! And so everybody started using linear workflow and having overexposed areas. Overall it was a good change and the renders started to look more real, but then we always have to deal with those overbright areas or just make the lighting in such a way to avoid them. Using a low Highlight Burn value isn't looking very pretty, actually. And now everybody is saying to go to ACES, which again, almost like brings back that "exponential color mapping" ideas... So yea, I wonder, what's the difference? Is ACES just another color mapping curve or is there something more to it?
@vasyapupken

@WizardVal
@WizardVal Год назад
@@davidslachta It is not about post-production, it is about a large amount of colour data built in your render, it is a different GI, you will never ever get the same results using linear workflow as the render is calculated within a wider colour space. Considering that we are moving fast and going beyond 8K visual experience you have to widen your colour range beyond the existing standards. Of course, it is always about "do you really need it right now? If your customers are happy and there is no demand in your area to get further" don't bother then.

@PetarStamenkovic
@PetarStamenkovic 3 года назад
I still don’t understand how is ACES better, or even useful in CG only projects. Both of your examples depend on not using an appropriate camera exposure for the sRGB. You're using ACES to do what camera exposure is normally used for. Low dynamic range format like JPG is in sRGB anyway- like the textures you’ve used in the scene. So, I can't see how is ACES beneficial there. All the texture transforms appear to be meaningless given that you have no image input other than sRGB. Lastly, if you’re going to be using an HDR format like EXR, here you have full 32 bits per channel of color, so I still fail to see the benefit of using ACES- for cg only compositing/post processing. I'd like to understand it better, but it only seems relevant for compositing with real life footage shot in camera manufacturer specific color space. There you'd want to have a unifying color space other than sRGB until the end of post production. That way you don't discard colors saved in the limited, but better-than-sRGB-color-space of camera manufacturer specific color space. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.
@iamski
@iamski 3 года назад
Personally speaking after comparing older projects with ACEs incorporated, the overall colortones look natural or too saturated, cartoony, or generically cgi. Additionally the burnouts are subdued which is both fantastic for shorter rendering times (because less samples needed) but also gives a natural lighting feel to the composition. This also depends what your trying to accomplish and the industry you're in: If you're just working on a animated cartoon or in the videogame industry, this may not be for you. However for VFX movies and archviz this is a must because photo-realism is the overall goal in our projects, and for our clients. Not to mention efficiency is also just a side bonus. That's what I'm seeing with the power of ACES. Hope this helps you out.

@@marcelouriartejiron6651 EXR files don't store the color transform. You will always get a linear image. To get the same result as in the render, you have to transform it again to sRGB, e.g. with a OCIO tranform node in Fusion. You could also export your render as a 16bit tiff file (no need to transform - compatible to Photoshop) if you need the higher bitrate. One more solution is the Blender compositor itself; create a file output node and plug in all needed passes and save all of them with one go.
