Caleb - can I recommend 4 x 120mm fans in front (which your case supports), this will address some of the common airflow issues many encounter, as well as closing/taping off any gaps/holes next to fans so air can't recirculate from the inside... a "true through" of air rather than least resistance (often air already inside), that will help all the components.
thank you very much for the sharing ,I'm doing the exactly same thing following your instructions, but I have a question that does this hba card support 16T sas harddisk?
Thanks for your videos. subscribed) I think chia is a very interesting project. I have a question about CPU and RAM. On what characteristics should I watch when buying cpu and ram? Is it reasonable to buy the toppest ones?
I bought this case and couldn't find anyone to clearly show how to get the drive trays in. Initially i thought i needed more of type B cages. Thanks to you, i just ordered all of them i could find on Amazon. 2 sets of 2. I just need 3 more sets. A side note, you can mount 2 more hard drives at the top. If you choose to take the fans out, you can fit 3 more where the fans go. I'm leaving the fans in, but I'll have 2 at top. So 18 x 18tb in my case.
You should have put those rubber pads at 4:03 into the larger cutouts and then slide them into the proper mounting holes so you get a cushion on both sides. The way you did it, the HDD is in contact with the cage.
I'm in the process of building this exact set up thanks to this video! Love it! Thank you for doing it! The one speed bump I have ran into is the cord for the USB 3.1 gen 2 in the front I/o will not plug into the USB port on the motherboard. I've order a converter to make it work, but I was wondering if leaving it disconnected for now would be a problem for start up or not. Rookie here..thanks for any help!
Chia is the sleeping Giant nobody is talking about. They are building since many years and will deliver a usefull solution for many problems in crypto. The hype will come naturally. Congrats everybody who is in early. Dyor
@@rapha5440 It's feasable for me to buy some coins to invest in Chia, but not to buy and set up a PC with 70 hard drives. Btw how is this better than proof of stake? For proof of stake you don't even need the hard drives.
There are just a few ways of trying to solve the crypto trilemma but in the end PoS isnt the only or best solution. There are many aspects for a good project which go far behind tokenomics or consensus but that looks pretty good at Chia. Like every market you have to deliver a usefull product people need and are able to use. Crypto projects out there are mostly hype and theory, this one is the opposite. But dont worry you can buy it in one month ;)
@@jamesevans2507 In proof of stake the people with the most coins just get the most new coins, so this automatically widens the equality gap over time. Here it is just about your own storage! It is really clever! and storage is storage it will not help to build some fancy storage in the way that this can be done with proof of work.
Not only that, but Farming Chia burns out drives, and FAST. The e-waste this is going to generate is absolutely mind boggling. This is going to be a disaster. This ''brilliant idea'' is going to render hard drives disposable.
@@archingelus nah but you're not looking at the longetivity of this. Soon manufacturers will be able to overcome the demand of computer parts by scaling up their production. I don't think the availabilitu side will be affected, yeah but the toxic waste is something else
Quick question tho, why have such expensive SSD's after you fully plot your 144TB? After you fully plot them the SSD's have no use anymore right? I just started and with profits i made in trading i bought a 500GB SSD for plotting and a 14TB HDD to store them on and farm with them. Your build almost costs 7k$?
By the way this video is very helpful for me because I don’t know how to solve the power supply problem about connecting a bunch of drives, this video is also useful for people trying to build their own nas, thank you.
Hey Caleb. I know your very busy with all the stuff you do for community. I need a little help from you mate. I only asking because you did it. I have a good deal for 18 TB external harddrives but I don't want all the cables hanging. I am build the same machine you did in this video. My question is if I can use Seagate external drives as internal. I know you use WD external as internal but I read on a thread that you can't use anymore. There is some sort of Pin/power issue. Couldn't you please shed more light on this..... really waiting for your reply.
I do want to say thank you first,, for the complete set up.. I'm modifying this to fit my budget.. Bottom line what does this cost to build, how many chia are farmed
With respect, and I appreciate that the situation was different when you did this video vs. the value of Chia and crypto in general today. The fact is, if anyone is watching, you cannot embark on a Chia farming journey buying any of this stuff. Yes, if you want an ROI in around 10 years, sure, buy new and fancy. I would advise that. Chia might pump. It might not. Who knows. I would recommend going as cheap as you possibly can. If an ROI is important then enjoy the video and the luxury that made sense when Chia was at a certain price. Go look up Chia value in April 2021. Big difference today. Great video though. I appreciate the tip about HBA heat. Not something I really thought about!
Yeah. I just sold a 14 tb WD external to a guy. He said he had a 1.2 petabyte farm and was only making $7 a day... Just the drives alone would have cost at least $20,000 Add a couple grand for the rest of the needed hardware and that's close to 10 years to break even.. unless chia rebounds from its lows... overall, the crypto price boom has been taking a long break.
@@rogerbarnett8412 Your example illustrates the problem. You also don't mention drive failure and replacement costs. The entire promised land is that whatever you acquired now, is worth something in the future and it will exceed what you invested into it. But think about that for a second. If the price of Chia goes to the moon, so will the difficulty and the inability to make any coin. You will need even more storage to try to keep pace, but if the value really goes up, keeping pace will almost be impossible. A lot of things could happen. Of course Chia has to sell promise. That's the only way they get people to farm.
Just got my first plot. it's mentioning it will take 16 years to have profit. I got a question, should I keep turn on my computer all the time? Once I got Chia coin, can I disconnect my HDD?
I think you made an error with the rubber ''washer''.. You need to put the washers in first, so you have rubber between the drive and the bracket... There is a groove in the middle of the washer, so one half sits on the drive side and one half on the screw side. The way its fastened now is useless for dampening...
For those fiddly little screws that are hard to keep on the end of the screwdriver, just wipe the screwdriver shaft against a magnet. Bingo your screws stay on the screwdriver. To de-magnetize you simply strike the screw driver on any metal edge a couple of times (short sharp blows) and its back to normal again.
The drink comment cracked me up. That’s something I would totally do and spill. I could see a RU-vid comedy version of destroying builds be pretty successful.
I'm thinking of setting up a chia miner for fun, but want to make the most out of my investment with a large NAS (likely a simple system running FREENAS) + independent systems per task use case. Ie. an Intel NUC for Chia, another for Arweave, another for filecoin, HTPC etc with a common network destination. What were the benefits of farming + destination on one system vs, turning your 360tb into a NAS?
Hi, great video and thank's a lot for your help and all your tips!!! I just want to tell you that the motherboard you choose for your setup, the ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING is not maybe the best motherboard choice for your setup with the P4610 SSD drive. You connect your two SSD drive P4610 with your M.2 to U.2 cable adaptators on one M.2 PCI-E4.0 slot and the second is a not a M.2 PCI-E4.0, it's a M.2 PCI-E3.0 slot ! This motherboard has only one M.2 PCI-E4.0 slot, the other one is a M.2 PCI-E3.0 slot. So I think it can affect the data rates for the second SSD drive. I order the same motherboard than you because of your video, but finally I decide to change this motherboard for the ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING who have two M.2 PCI-E4.0 slots and three PCI EXPRESS 4.0 16x slots. Can you tell me also, if your M.2 to U.2 cable adaptators are PCIE GEN4.0 or GEN3.0? Thank's a lot for your help, all your videos are great and it help me a lot to start with Chia!
4:05 Anyone else triggered that he didn't use the grommets correctly? lol. This is good info, I'm liking the idea of HDD mining. I've got about $5k(just for the drives and extra RAM, I already have leftover PC components from previous builds) I'm going to use to start mining and I've been debating what to actually mine, CHIA looks interesting. Edit: if you want to maximize the amount of HDD's, just use a small M.2 SSD for the operating system if your Mobo supports it. No power or sata cables needed. Also, if you want to use your PCI slots for the Intel drives, you can just use a Ryzen APU with integrated graphics. Edit: Didn't realize the CPU was important for CHIA mining, I'm not sure if something like the 3400G would be enough. If not just ignore that...
i;m thinking of keeping a 1tb m2 3600write speed for the plot can you use multiple external hard drives for the farm? does it make a difference if you have 1 8tb hard drive or 2 4tb hard drives for farming ?
One question... what happens to the HDD when they are full? I mean... does the data last forever on my hdd? Do i have to keep them connected forever and build up a new system? Or are they moving after time away by itself?
Wouldn't you be able to connect a monitor through a VGA, DVI or HDMI built on the motherboard? I'm confused. That would just save a pcie slot. Pretty sure the mb you got supports either of those if not all.
Hello, Is the speed of the drive important for digging chia? I want to make some tests and connect cheap external SSD + HDD to cheap laptop, but I don't know if it brings atleast the same amount of profit as cost. :D
You may want to learn, on how to insert the rubber pads in the drive bays. Yep you did it wrong. push through the big hole, halfway through and move to the smaller hole. Having the rubber pads on one side push against the hard disk is kinda pointless :D
I got a few questions. How is the best method to do plots? One by one? Only 1 at once? Or 2 or 3? 100/200/400/800 GB? As I see the most important thing is VERY FAST temp drive, yes? I am planning to buy 2TB Evo 870 SSD. Is it good choice or not? 16 TB HDD or 8 TB also possible? Speed has meaning? (HDD)? I did 1 famr but only 850 free nvMe disc. I choose to do 2x200 GB at once. Thank you for amamzing movie.
Is there a more cost effective build for new comers to the space? I am thinking of repurposing my old gaming pc, with a 16 port USB adapter. I will get 14 external hdd hard drives to store plots and 2 nvme external hard drives for temporary space.
Hey Caleb, thanks for the video. Im copying your build using all the same parts. One problem ive had is the os isnt recognizing my hd's. Im wondering if its because the card is a raid controller? It seems to be wanting me to set up raid arrays. How did you get that raid card you used to work as an hba?
Love these vids! Would love a video on how to farm on multiple computers (i.e a main desktop and multiple old laptops sitting around the house). Also, how would this work if I can't fit more storage into my PC? Can I do external storage?
Hi!, thanks for the video. But this build is way to expensive.. right?. What HD would you recommend for 8TB or so?. I don't need 18TB that´s insane 😂. And Why 64GB RAM for farming??. Isn't 16 GB Enough?
Hello to all! I am new here and i want to start plotting and farming. I read this thread and i learn than i need nvme ssd to plotting and hdd for storage and farming. I want to ask what it is better for the other pc specs. It is better a pc with 3900x and 32gb ram at 3600mhz or an older motherboard with dual xeon E5 2695V3 (28 cores / 56 threads) and 32gb or 64gb ram 2666mhz? It is better less cores with higher clock speed or more than double cores with lower speed? Which system is better for parallel plotting? Do you have any advise for me? Thanks for your time!
Hi I’m new to this and using my current gaming set up 3900x 2080ti 32gb ram and I have a dedicated SSDs for my operating system/games and 40T external hhd to save my plots(thinking about buying another 40T) . I have a 1T 970 or 980 evo plus m.2 laying around not being used ( I have to dig it up I can’t remember) and I was thinking about using it as temporary storage. How many plots can I run on that m.2? And if I do end up buying another 40t should I upgrade to the m.u? I’m just a little lost on that part. Thank you
Before spending a cent on any new equipment, first check out the advanced tab at chiacalculator. The exponential growth of the network will make all this worthless in a few months. Unless you think the price of XCH will also grow exponentially, then equipment purchases like this will not pay for themselves. If you really believe XCH will grow exponentially, then buy XCH instead. You will probably have a much better chance of recovering some of your money than buying hard drives or NVMe drives.
Do you think the prism wraith cpu Cooler you used is good for the cpu?? Do you think it will over heat! I am using a ryzen 9 3900x?? What do you recommend
Hey man, I've binged watched all your videos. Amazing production quality and content. You're awesome!!! Btw, Amazon link to your store is broken kinda. I had to delete some random symbols in the URL after I clicked on it.
Everybody wants a fast temp drive but I have yet to see them being written to at more than 600MB/s Have you tracked HDD Usage statistics from plot to farm yet?
can you please let us know what kind of cooling you did for the raid card? mine runs a bit hot at 77 degrees celsius and i have pretty much identical setup as in the video.
I use thermal pad rated double sided tape for everything. Fans, ssds, m.2s, little heat sink blocks on m.2 is wicked as well as on the backplate of gpus
I have a bunch of things OLDER hard drives that I was thinking about putting to use for this. But they are low capacity... :/ Would it even be worthwhile to put those to use?
Thank you for a wonderful job, please allow me to ask you a question..those destination drives for farming, do you recommend pooling them instead of leaving them as individual drives?
Thank you for this video, I still haven’t figured this out hard drive mining as yet, I’m a gpu miner. In reality, with your build, how much Chia is it going to make?
How did you manage to get the second m.2_2 slot to work with the P4610 and use a Graphics Card to work in the PCIE slot? I can't get the second m2_2 slot drive to appear
Quick question. If I use the PCIE U.2 to M.2 card convertor, can I use plug it into the little PCIE slots, I've got like 3 of those not used in the motherboard
You installed the HDD rubber grommets wrong, they are not screwed on, but they have a slit and inserted into the metal between the two, thats why tehre is a bigger hole near the screw-hole, that for the rubber to go in and then you push it into the small hole.
does plotting time matter or just the amount of storage because from my understanding it just shortens the set up and will farm at the same speed....??
Severe overkill. I have an older SuperMicro server running 72 drives, mostly 14GB with a few 10 and 12, using a SINGLE E5-2695 on Gigabyte C4 compressed plots without issues. It WAS a little marginal running that many C5 compression plots with the single CPU, but the second socket in the machine was borked and unusable. 5950x (which I have in my just-built gaming rig) would be significantly faster, as it's several generations newer, MUCH higher clock speed, DDR4 RAM instead of 3, and 4 more cores (8 more threads) - for a LOT fewer plots.
With Chia it takes forever to finish a plot. A lot of electricity is used for plotting. With Burst / BHD, plotting is a lot faster and therefore more energy-saving (with the same CPU and RAM performance) and therefore, in my opinion, more environmentally friendly
Anyone know how to install the OS system in that Kingston hard drive that is used in the build? I was expecting a tutorial on that as well. Thanks in advance.
Why do we need to be worried about NVME durability since once you plot then it is done and the NVME doesn't need to do its job anymore apart from future plotting?
SSD need to use for create the plot , and than use HDD to farming? Example : I use SSD create 3plots and I used HDD for farming with that 3plots. It's can or not?
Your HDD will eventually fill up from plotting and then you will need to farm them. Eventually once more and more people start mining, your chances at success will drop. You will eventually plateau and will need to invest into more space.
