"there's no shortage of people telling my that I'm wrong" 9 people caught a stray bullet with that line 😂 thanks for this though, been trying to search for a way to test the VSS just to make sure the electrician I talked to was right that my instrument cluster is the problem. Well, turns out my speed sensor was faulty. Saved me $100. Thanks man.

That for acknowledging the effort. I gave it lots of thought so the information could cover all the types of possible failures and for multiple models and generations of Honda.

Thank you very much for all this diagnostic info! I was able to pinpoint my problem, a randomly fluctuating speedometer, and make the repair based on your video. I re-soldered the pins of the NS chip on the control board. Some were corroded. Excellent guidance.

I had so many failing issues at once. Glad you were able to resolve them. This is a really simple system once it is documented on how to diagnose all the components.

I’m having this problem now. What’s weird is that when I had the old speed sensor it would randomly work now that I changed the sensor it doesn’t at all. I’m hoping it’s a short in the cluster I don’t have those tools tho

I made this video as complete as possible so if you have a failed issue it will catch it. As you can see I had multiple points of failure from in the engine to behind the dash. Best of luck there is a companion video on how to test the vehicle speed sensor outside the vehicle. I recommend watching that also.

My speedo and odometer stopped working on my b18c gsr a while ago and now vtec is engaging at 7k rpm instead of 4600rpm. I have replaced the vss made no difference. when I checked the connector plug for the vss the ground wire was showing a small reading not sure if thats supposed to happen? I got the car scanned and it showed no codes, I checked the ground around the thermostat and gearbox they are good I also removed the cluster and everything seems good. Has anybody an idea to what could be the problem?

I followed your guide im only getting 1.6 v on the blue and white wire? Am I doing something wrong
@MotionDesignStudio
@MotionDesignStudio Год назад
This is difficult to answer. If you are seeing a output voltage then this is good. The voltage will never get higher than 4.6 volts. The constant velocity at which you can spin the vehicle speed sensor affects the output voltage that the car's computer uses to display the speed on the speedometer.

Is there a way to have the speedometer recalibrated? I have a 2000 Honda Civic ex and ever since I got new tires which are a bit bigger than the stock ones (which Honda no longer makes in the size) my speedometer reads too high. As an example it’ll read 60 mph when I’m only going 55mph
@MotionDesignStudio
@MotionDesignStudio 2 года назад
Your car has a specification for this tire size from the factory 185/65R14. Any bigger and you will cover more space per revolution. This vehicle speed sensor only uses rpm values for when it is turned by the transmission. The answer is no you can not calibrate it only replace current tires with stock size tires or use a GPS software to display your speed.

Hi, I did the tests in the video and everything is working normally, but it still doesn't show the speed, when I tested the blue and white wire it gives me a voltage of 4.75 and when I drive the car it maintains that voltage, different from the video than the voltage it varies downwards and I did a test by moving the needle with the car running and it always goes to zero immediately, regardless of the position it is in, could you help me?
@MotionDesignStudio

This most likely means you need a new speed dial; the chip has failed. Here are your solutions: go to a junkyard and find a Honda or Acura from the same generation, specifically looking for one with the lowest mileage. The failure of the chip is inevitable. Occasionally, it rusts, but if you have disassembled it to that level of detail, you would have seen the rust. If there is no rust, you can obtain that one part, replace it, and everything will work.

Angle A, I recommend getting a Bluetooth OBD-II reader attached to your car while driving displaying live data and see if you are receiving vehicle speed from the vehicle speed sensor. This way you know if the issue is on the display side, or sensor and or wires.

Hello, somehow my wire from the vss to the speedometer from the brown box underneath the dash is somehow getting battery voltage and I don't know how the wire routes to the speedometer through the Chassis, it links through the firewall then somehow makes it way around to drivers side and I'm so stuck.

Jojo Ramirez, sounds like you are in a pickle. What is the make, model and year of your vehicle? Warning if it is not the same as the one featured in the video only limited feedback can be offered.

Could this mess with the rpm’s also ?
@MotionDesignStudio
@MotionDesignStudio 2 года назад
The vehicle speed sensor on this vehicle and other vehicles using similar hardware from Honda/Acura provide the speed information to the car's computer to help it make decision affecting performance and to lower immersions. This is done suing hard coded value in lookup tables embedded in memory. The revolution per minute or RPM on this and similar vehicles most likely come from the crank position sensor.

What could be happening when the speedometer behaves identically to the rev counter behavior? It started like that and stopped working! Thank you so much for the attention to my question.🤔

@@MotionDesignStudio Thank you so much for the attention. In fact it is not possible make a video to show, because the speedmeter is dead with the needle placed in zero, it stopped moving definitly. Anyhow, I made a diagnostico with blinking lights and I got the code -17 (1 long and 7 shorts) and I can believe that the speed sensor is bad. I have to diagnostic the speed sensor as you show in the vedeo. I must wait for a new speedmeter and replace the one that is in the car. Also i think that the odometer do not count partially and totally, but i am not sure and I have to see better driving the car on the road, what I avoid doing, radars and police.
@carlosmanuelcunhavalinhas2483

Also my car has two plugs, 2 pins and 5 pins. The 2 pins is for blinking lights diagnostic. In the 5 pins plug I can find a ground, a battery and one pin with about 4.58V which I presume is K-Line High. I have two more pins with voltages bigger than 12V of the battery. Do you have an idea what does signals are ? Thanks for the attention.

So my speedo Stopped working and wondering if its my Sensor or the Dash cause my RPM is working but not my speed!! hmmm?
@MotionDesignStudio
@MotionDesignStudio Год назад
The easiest way to diagnose this is to get a Bluetooth capable OBD II reader. I recommend BlueDriver. Connect it to your automobile and read the live data. It will provide speed if your speedometer is functioning. Then you can look at the instrument cluster as a potential source of failure. This is a ll very easy and you got this. I have another video that show you how to bench test the vehicle speed sensor. Here is the video : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mcn1pA4bWa8.html

Go to the junk yard and start cutting pigtails from any sensors. Typically all Hondas in the 90’s are the same anyway.

That is a great resource. I am noticing this generation of Civic are not as common anymore in the junkyards I go to.

@@MotionDesignStudio If you can find Accords alot of the body and engine compartment connectors are the same except some connections have extra pins or you'll have to add one. Alot of the same connectors are found on 92-97 Accords/Odysseys and even more of them on the 98-03 Accords and Odysseys as well. CRV is in the Civic family so if you run up on trashed out 95-2000 CRV it's basically identical to the EK Civics. CRV speedometers and connections are swappable to Civics as well.
@MotionDesignStudio
@MotionDesignStudio Год назад
@@foxisretrofitting4556 , I will keep this in mind. I wonder how much of the instrument cluster can be exchanged from this time period.
@foxisretrofitting4556
@foxisretrofitting4556 Год назад
@@MotionDesignStudio I know CRV clusters are practically the same as Civics. People use them to get a semi "Si" look since they are red striped and glow orange stock but if I can sometime I'll take apart some different clusters and compare/swap components around to see if there's some hidden gems that can be used to keep these clusters alive. I've got 94-97 accord, 92-95 civic, and 96-00 civic parts around I can experiment with.
@MotionDesignStudio
@MotionDesignStudio Год назад
@@foxisretrofitting4556 , I like these types of experiments. I will grab several from the junkyard and see what is interchangeable. Because these clusters are failing left and right. Mine currently has failed again. In a perfect word component level repair would be the best to create a long term solution for these. I am working on gaining proficiency at component level repair.
