Duran quitting had nothing to do with SRL`s showboating. He quit because he was taking very hard shots from Leonard and he was finding it nearly impossible to land ANY worthwhile shots of his own. He admitted it several years later in an interview; he said " I wasn`t going to allow myself to be humiliated or knocked out."
He first claimed to have quit because he had stomach cramps. But I think most boxing fans knew the real reason. The reason that you stated above. What Duran didn`t realize back then was that he humiliated himself a lot more by quitting, instead of finishing the fight, regardless of how it would have ended. He made the choice to lose by quitting rather than by decision or knock out.
Other than Tyson/Holyfield II, this was the most stunning end to a championship bout I've ever seen. You can just hear the astonishment in Howard Cosells voice when he saw that the referee called the fight because Duran had spoken the now infamous words: "No mas".
@@robbie192 which is why he lost in the first fight. Duran is a legend but Leonard can brawl but not out brawl someone like Duran. In the rematch, Leonard was much more elusive and smart. Rather than staying in the pocket and trying to outwork Duran.
BrWithFMJ Oh really? What about Oliver McCall quitting and crying ? At least Duran didn't cry like a woman. I'd say Tyson biting Holifield ear off was strange? I mean really?
@@flaming_21savage52 yup you should see all the shit ppl give roger maywaether aboit the Chavez fight Duran quit he pne of the greatest but "no mas" will always be attached to him
Looked like Duran felt like Leonard was not allowing him use his game plan. Even at moments when he looked like he was close to getting into his game plan, Leonard wasn't affected by it. In fact, it looked like Leonard was the benefactor even when he came close to establishing his game plan. No matter what Duran did, it looked like Leonard's confidence was elevating as Duran's confidence was diminishing. After a while Duran lost complete confidence to the point where he loss all hope. That is exactly what happened; nothing more and nothing less.
This fight is a great example of how much of a real impact has psychological factors in a bout. Duran was´nt even getting beaten down, not his body that is, but his spirit sure was bruised
@@brysonmack98 nope sugar ray never beat duran at his peak, duran was not fully fit in this fight he did not get in full shape after all partying, he should not have taken this fight immediately
if he wasn't such a showboat I would actually have respect for him. Also, when you win a fight b/c a guy says he'd outty, and then you go crazy celebrating, that says it all. If I was in a battle and a guy gave up and just quit, I would feel robbed. Dude was no Mike Tyson - Tyson never showboated and acted the fool, he just kicked ass.
@@fastfootedone so I guess u dont like football or basketball huh? And tyson whipped ass but talked shyt n stopped whooping ass when someone stood there n fought back
Robert M. Storm outboxed? only in that he did not box. he clowned around and ran around the ring. what he did was outside of what is called boxing. duran kept telling him to fight and leonard didnt'. duran ended the farce. look at leonard's foolish reaction after such a hollow victory. taunting an opponent, refusing to engage, these are not signs of outsmarting an opponent. they are desperate shortcuts that people with no class or honor take. pity you admire that.
Duran couldn't take the crowd cheering for Leonard and also the schooling he was getting. Nothing to do with fear. He knew he was gonna lose and didn't want to give Leonard the win in the proper way. 2 legend's regardless
There’s more to it. He was forced to take the fight by his promotor. So he got back at him by not training and partying leading up to the fight. Once he was there, he just didn’t want it.
Ray should of fought this type of fight the first time. Clearly the superior boxer by a decent margin. This is what happens when you try to give fans who don't give a fuck about you what they want. I seen interviews and watched the 30 for 30 and he was devastated after that loss.
I met a relative of Duran once, she was very proud to be related to him and told stories of how well he treated all his family, she claims they are some bad food the day before and he wasn’t feeling well. She was very sweet, but I still believe Leonard just outboxed him in every way
I am Mexican and in this comment because Leonar is simply one of the greatest boxers in North America and my great respect for this great Athlete who in my opinion are the ones who should have won much more than those who now according to are Champions and already with 5 fights and one won are already champions and millionaires like the cinnamon that have nothing spectacular about their fights esepto with GGG that now does not want to fight him, so my great admiration for Leonard and many more Champions of that time Thank you Leonard for so many emotions!
Prince Hamed would steal many of the moves that Leonard used here. (Leonard of course admitting to stealing from his hero, Ali much of his career.) Especially the head fakes in the 7th.
My dad took me to this fight, on closed circuit TV. It was weird. I walked out of there, confused. Usually, a fight has a winner and a loser, or a draw, but not a quitter.
When I want to erase from my mind some of the shyte that passes for boxing now days I settle in, pour a beer, put my feet up and watch fights like this in their entirety. :)
Im not the biggest Sugar Ray Leonard fan but he boxed beautifully and he caught Duran with some serious shots had him hurt a few times thats why he quit it was just frustration he felt it too.
DURAN HIT LEONARD WITH MUCH HARDER SHOTS THAN LEONARD HIT HIM WITH..PEOPLE CAN BE BLINDED BY THE COMMENTARY..HOWARD COSSELL ACTED LIKE HE DIDNT SEE ANY PUNCHES THAT DURAN WAS LANDING.I STILL DONT SEE ANY REASON TO MAKE DURAN QUIT...I BELIEVED THE HYOE WHEN I WAS A KID..WATCHING THE REAL FIGHT.I SEE NO REASON
Typical ignorant hater. You don't know shit about boxing if you think Mayweather wasn't great. I'm not much of a fan, but I've been a faithful boxing fan since I was 5 years old, so I know where credit is due.
yeah quitting is way better than defensive fighting. how about you educate yourself in regards to technique, speed, and raw skill because Floyd has all of those in absolute spades. there is a reason Floyd is undefeated. doesnt happen by mistake
Sugar Ray Leonard totally outplayed Duran,Duran quit because clearly he was exausted and couldn't even touch the fast and energetic sugar Ray even if he continued.
what about his offensive? how many steps forward he did in this fight? 2? 1? 0? i just can't like a fighter that all his steps are backwards (Aka "running")
The tough old fighters from the 50s never said "No Mas". Can't imagine Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio or Sugar Ray Robinson saying such a thing. Basilio almost lost an eye against Robinson. I can't imagine that Duran felt more pain than Basilio felt that night. So what if Leonard showed disrespect? Ali showed disrespect against Frazier and Foreman, yet those guys didn't say "No mas". Ali himself continued to fight Kenny Norton with a broken jaw! The pain must have been epic in the history of boxing! The only other quitter that I can remember is Sonny Liston, who lay down twice against Ali.
Hundreds of pro boxer's have quit or there trainer's thrown in the towel! Chisora quit on his stool against Fury after getting a beating a boxing lesson 🥊 Present day you can't blame a boxer who quits as their health is at stake. We now know from medical science repeated hits to the head can lead to brain damage, parkinsons etc
@@C--A Duran didn't look like he was in bad shape. Check out the Basilio v Robinson fight. Basilio looked like he was going to lose an eye, but he didn't quit. He lost anyway. I would've quit if I was losing and taking the kind of beating he was taking. But I'm not a pro fighter. Ali almost quit when he got something in his eye in his first fight with Sonny Liston, but Dundee told him this is your big fight, you can't quit. Ali stayed in the fight, cleared his eye and it was Liston who quit. You quit once, it makes it that much easier to quit again, which is what Liston did in his second fight with Ali. Ali never quit again, though he admitted that he thought he was going to die in one of his fights with Frazier. Frazier never quit in his fights against Foreman, and those fights had to be stopped by the ref.
@@joep8787 May not have looked in bad shape to the people watching but Duran took some heavy shot's to the head. Inside his body he would be hurting and it must of just got to much for him to continue. I've watched the Clay (he wasn't Mohamed Ali yet) vs Liston first fight several times. Clay wasn't trying to quit, they say Liston put something on his glove to irritate Clay's eye, boxing back then was more dirty! Clay weathered the storm didn't let it get under his skin then went on to win the fight. Though admittedly Liston wasn't in the best physical condition for the fight plus he underestimated the young Cassius Clay.
@@joep8787 Duran lost something like 30 pounds in the space of a month for this fight. Losing that much weight that quickly has a huge impact on the body. Not saying he would have beaten leonard if Duran was in peak shape like leonard was but the fight would be way more intense and closer than it already was
@@Kimbo67 Yes, a lot of fighters gain weight between fights. Never could understand why they do that. They're supposed to be professionals, not to mention their lives are on the line like no other athlete. A split second can mean the difference between being alert and being unconscious. No doctor would ever stop keeping up with the latest developments in the medical field. You never see tennis or basketball players gain weight in their off seasons. It's hard to lose weight. Your body doesn't want to do it. It's much easier to stay in shape than get into shape. A boxer should be concentrating on timing and studying his next opponent. I like food, but I know enough to stop eating before I stop feeling hungry. Your brain is always 15-20 minutes behind your stomach. My weight hasn't fluctuated by more than 5 pounds either way in the past 30 years, and my income isn't dependent on a stable weight.
Tell me how it is different? He went into the fight to box and he ducked around to piss Duran off... That's sports to get into your opponents head please tell me how it's different
Seems everyone forgot Duran was 190 lbs a month before this fight, Durans management snaked him and made a deal with sugar to make the rematch FAST since sugar knew Duran was overweight. Duran didn’t know about this. SRL even said himself that Duran was nowhere near his peak conditioning for this fight since he was weight drained by losing almost 40 lbs ( unlike the first bout they had ). Had duran come into this fight in the same shape as there 1st fight it would have been a different story. Still though props to them both some of the best fighters of all time.
+Johny Kilroy LOL Johny no one ever quit in those days either, but Duran was out of his league against Sugar Ray in this fight and he was getting hurt.
+capnamerca He wasn't out of his league... Duran beat him in the first bout. He got frustrated from Leonard dancing around him, that's why he kept waving his hand for Leonard to go in. He quit because he was embarrassed, frustrated, and heated. He came to fight, Leonard knew he couldn't win on the inside, so he came to dance. I wouldn't say he outclassed Duran, but Duran couldn't keep up with Leonard, got aggravated, tired of chasing him, and had enough. I have endless respect for the guy. No one would've expected this from Duran. Its not the kind of fighter he was.
People crying about Leonard when Duran knew what Leonard liked to do dance around the ring. It was Duran saying he was going ko SR. He quit plan and simple
He was hurt & turned away, caught that big shot to midsection. I think he couldn't breath & got confused for a moment. No fighter of his caliber would quit. I'm sure he wished he could do it differently. But no matter what, Ray beat his asd
Leonard the much better fighter. The first fight was more of a wrestling match. Leonard frustrated Durant and embrassed him so he just flat out quit. Was getting that butt whipped.
in the hands of stone movie they painted it like duran just didn't care at all... in reality he got his clock cleaned out punched out moved out boxed and he gave up
Does anyone realize how awsome it was to be alive in America in 1980? The great Howard Cosell announcing, Ray Charles singing, Olympic champion Sugar Ray getting revenge on the unlikable Roberto Duran who supposedly had a steak and quart of milk in his belly. I was 12 and knew times were good. Angelo Dundee in Rays corner too.
@Johnfalcon if u wanted to see boxing, then u jus witnessed boxing at it's best. Leonard had superb footworks and duran had no answer for it. And he wasn't running it's called defence something duran didn't have, he's too flat footed
They where both amazing fighters!!! But.... Leonard did a lot of smack talking for his rematch, lets not forget Leonard demanded a rematch just months shortly after his whupping in the 1st match (claiming that if Duran didn't take the fight he'd fight someone else) Duran (who barely managed to shed the weight and train b4 the rematch) entered the ring expecting a brawl and all he got was a dancing ballerina for the 1st 6 rounds. But...I agree he shouldn't of quit.
Im mexican and i love how mayweather boxes.. i always buy his fights.. pure boxing.. hit and dont get hit.. he doesnt run.. but SRL vs duran.. yeah thats a whole different story..
Well that's a shit referee because if that ref would've done his job correctly then Tyson would've won when he dropped that Buster. The ref is suppose to pick the standing 8 count up off of the time keeper, but he didn't and actually gave Buster 2 extra secs to recover. That was a MAJOR,career altering BLUNDER!!
***** Well, maybe. It appears to me that Douglas was fully alert and ready to rise earlier. He simply waited till the count reached nine but could have gotten up two seconds earlier. We'll never know, I don't guess. What we can know is that Douglas beat Tyson's eye shut and when he dropped Tyson, the champ was in no condition to continue the fight.
andan04 Dude, what the fuck do you know?! Tyson and Douglas BOTH took the same time to raise up off of the canvas. If you still don't believe me ,them look up Tyson vs Douglas - identical 10 counts! Mike Tyson got "Jobbed" if you know what I mean. That ref has made THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN MODERN-DAY BOXING HISTORY! Tyson was the king of all kings at that time and the biggest money making attraction( love him or hate him) and that ref straight fucked us all!
I know Buster Douglas beat Tyson's eye shut but finished that fight without a visible mark on him. I know that when Douglas went down, he pounded the canvas in frustration and then looked, fully alert, at the ref, waiting for the count to reach nine before he rose. I know that when Tyson went down, he was fumbling around for his mouthpiece, which he put in backward, and obviously had no idea where he was. I know that if the ref had stopped the fight when Douglas got up, there would have been a huge controversy. I know that when the ref stopped the fight after Tyson got up, nobody wondered why. And I know that Douglas won that fight.
What I'm denying is the notion that Douglas was out and couldn't possibly have risen two seconds earlier. I believe he could have and that the same video you're referring to indicates that. I don't deny that Douglas was hurt when Tyson dropped him, which is why he used the full time allotted to him, but as he would prove just minutes later, he was clearly able to continue. I'm also denying the suggestion that Douglas didn't deserve to win that fight. He clearly took the fight to Tyson the entire night and landed the cleaner, harder shots throughout. In fact he landed more punches than Tyson threw.
@@hari-cg9lb would not say boring but I agree it's not know as a great fight like thete first fight was. It mote known as a exraordnery fight for the way during quit.
sejlane Leonard will be known as one of the greatest of all time rregardlessif you think he sucks or not. Duran did not throw that fight he quit. After beating him the first time he got relaxed and out of shape. A hungry Leonard came back and got his belt back. Watch the documentary "No mas". He was just above average? You can not ever be half a boxer that man was. Keep crying
Did they ever find out why Duran quit this fight, was it ever known ? Was it fixed maybe or was he injured ? As he doesnt seem like the type of person to quit.
He was getting outclassed and saw no way of winning so he gave in. A tough fighter would have kept fighting on but a tougher fighter would be able to swallow their pride and live to fight another day.
