It's never too late to start a garden! In this series of videos we'll take you through the entire process of building, planting, maintaining, harvesting, and winterizing a garden.
In this first video our resident Garden Gnome shows you how to build and fill raised garden beds. Raised beds are an ideal choice for anyone wanting to garden who may have mobility restrictions, wants to keep pets out of their crops, or for anyone really, you don't have to have any specific reason to want raised beds.
Thank you for choosing to watch our video. Kawartha Backyard Farms is on a mission to end food insecurity within the City of Kawartha Lakes by promoting growing food in our living spaces and helping residents start their own backyard farms.
How our project works is residents can join completely for free to receive assistance in starting and maintaining a food-producing garden. All of the labour and knowledge we provide is completely free as long as 30% of the produce grown is donated to local community support agencies that host some sort of food security program. We also host a free market where all are welcome to stop by to share, trade, or just pick up some free food. This is a barrier-free project meaning no one ever needs to provide any personal information or proof of need. We all need to eat!
To help support this project please like and share our content and of course subscribe if you haven't already. The purpose of this channel is to achieve monetization to fund this project and provide more support to our community. If you are in a position to support financially please consider donating to our gofundme campaign (gofund.me/c43e...)
As our growing season ramps up please stay tuned for many more videos and updates!
Until the next video, we hope you have a wonderful time in your gardens!

As a fellow Ontario gardener I would point out that in my experience using spruce to build garden beds is a mistake. I have had spruce boxes rot in as little as 2 years. Adding muches to the bottom of the bed will accelerate the decay as the fungi, moulds and bacteria need to break down mulch into compost are the same fungi, moulds and bacteria that will rot wood in contact with the ground. I have had 1" pine (roofing pine) boxes last up to 15 years. I now grow in elevated boxes built with sienna pressure treated wood. I reseached the potential for chemecical leaching before I constructed them and believe that the pressure treatment would have no impact on health concerns.

Yes some wood will breakdown faster than others and pine or cedar would have been a better choice if it was affordable. We have raised beds at our own BYF made with cull lumber that are still holding up after 5 years. I know the new pressure treatments are not nearly as bad as what was used in the past. I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and for providing your insights. Thank you very much and I hope you have a wonderful season ahead.
