You emphasize in your video that the translation of certain modals into our own language is not a good idea and that there is no connection between the use of some modals like "must" ( 13:29 ) ; however, I am a native spanish speaker and have been an English teacher for a long time and I can tell you that you would be surprised how similar they behave. Debe estar enfermo (certainty or better assumption ) vs. Debes hacer tu tarea . ( obligation) ....exact same 2 functions as in Spanish !! ..and that is just one example... it goes on and on ...I could say that more than 80% of the times it is exactly the same thing... We also translate the 6 uses of "can " that you explained exactly the same way in Spanish!! It doesn´t change at all ! Thank you for your video. I liked your approach. For those of you who speak Spanish or want to learn Spanish ....don´t get so mixed up! Use your Spanish translation and you will see how easy it becomes... Bye!

It's great that you've found a helpful pattern of translation! This is not the case for other languages, as they are all quite different, but thank you for sharing and we're so glad you enjoyed the lesson!

Hii!!!! Thank you teachers, i love this I started learning English 3 months ago, And i would like to know if "could not have" can be used to criticize someone for something that they did For example : "You could not have done it" ( It means that the person did it and they shouldn't have done it ) Does it work ?? Or am I wrong Thank you for your answer !!
@Oxfordonlineenglish1
@Oxfordonlineenglish1 2 года назад
Hi Cintya. We're happy you enjoy the lessons. 'Could' expresses ability. If we say 'couldn't have' that means the person did not have the ability to do it. Hope this helps you! You can learn more in our other lessons, such as this one: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/would-have-could-have-should-have.

Don't Say that. Look! It is simple. Would is condicional and potencial. For eg: comería. Would eat. And could is the past of can. Could is condicional and past. (Yo pude o podría comer.) I could eat. ( Yo sería. I would be) yo pude o pudiera ser : i could be. Hope You can understand and keep studying.
