This is an awesome setup! Its a good platform for the next step...a truly "smart" home , one that thinks on its own, by watching/sensing your movements, learning from them and then automatically reacts to you anticipated needs. For example indoor cameras should detect when you are up and about and when you have left the house, if you have left the house for more than 20 mins, check that all lights are turned off, lock all outside doors, reduce heating/cooling systems, and turn on the security system. Out door/indoor cameras should detect your arrival and then do the reverse.

Who the hell dislikes this? Have you seen all the coolness there? All these people complaining about the same things: if it's not a home but a room, if you actually need to press one single button to make things move... I don't know if you realize that most of those things can be solved with more time. Obviously he has enough capability to do it, he has proved he has the knowledge needed, so it is just a matter of time. He wanted to show us a really cool project that most people down there would love to have in their houses. So stop crying and appreciate the job of this guy who showed us how he did it, so we can have a chance to start building our own one!

This is not automation... this is remote control. Also your "home automation control pad" is just a central control pad - as a custom home theater and automation installer back in the 1990's, this stuff bugs me to all heck. Nothing like a $2M+ home and you walk into a room and there is a thermostat, next to a whole-house audio controller, next to a Crestron touch screen, next to a bank of 8 wall switches or a Lutron multi-channel light controller. As with most of the customers I worked with who had systems like that, eventually you will grow to be annoyed at the complexity of it, and good luck with guests. Where the automation comes in is what you do later once you have the hardware integrated (which is what this video basically is). Let me tell you what automation is like. Around 30 minutes before the time that you wake up in the morning, your thermostat sets itself to a wake-up temperature in your room an the rooms you will move through, your water heater ramps up from an overnight temperature of 150°F to 185°F. about 10 minutes before you wake up, your hot water recirculation system ensures that all of the cold water in the building's lines has been rotated back to the water heater, and your coffee maker starts. At the time your alarm goes off, your whole house audio system slowly ramps up to a gentle ambient volume and your lights ramp up over 5 minutes. When you get out of bed, your home's motion sensors detect that you've gotten out of bed and cancels the alarm, while turning on the light to your bathroom and closet. As you walk to the shower, the water begins running and sets to your prefered temperature, and the moisture ventilation fan ramps to high. As you step into the shower, your whole house audio system starts reading you your overnight emails, and gives you a brief on your early morning tasks and any big schedule items on your plate for the day. As you step out of the shower the water turns itself off, and the ventilation fan slowly ramps down tracking the ambient humidity. As you get dressed and situated, your smart mirror shows you the traffic for the route you're expecting to take to work, and the weather for the day. As you leave the bathroom, the lights turn themselves off and the light to the hallway and the kitchen turn on (based on your routine). Your coffee is ready to take from the coffee maker and your music gently fills only the room you are in to prevent bothering your family. As you finish your breakfast and put your dishes away, your refrigerator takes inventory of what you consumed and uploads it into your health tracker. To keep you on schedule, you are reminded by your TTS assistant of the major items you need to bring with you as you leave, if your phone's bluetooth is detected in a room where you are not located, it will remind you to grab your phone. As you head to the door (or a bit before on colder days), your car's remote start fires up the car, disarms the front door and unlocks it. The house sees your bluetooth phone address exit through the front door when the door contact opens and closes, then sees your bluetooth phone address enter your car. Your route to your first appointment of the day is automatically uploaded by your assistant into your car's navigation system, and your music playlist or channel continues where it left off as you left the house. Your kitchen lights turn off, and your home phone forwards your calls to your cell phone. As you pull out of your driveway the front door re-locks and the home/armed mode is set back to your alarm system to protect your family. Later as the last person leaves your home, the system ensures your windows are closed and the blinds drawn, locks the doors, sets the away mode for your alarm system, and changes the setpoint of your thermostat to reflect the home is unoccupied, but keeps track of humidity and air changes to avoid wear and tear on your home's structure and your possessions, and keep VOCs down. Your water heater is allowed to coast down to a lower temperature to save energy. Your WiFi is shut off so that it's not an attractive nuisance, and all of the phone ringers are muted so that a caller can't hear the phone not being picked up (all calls are routed to your mobile anyway). As anyone approaches your home who is not your family, the CCTV cameras on the outside will recognize that the person is a mailman, delivery driver, or some other authorized presence (like a utility meter reader) - based on pattern recognition of the person's movements and direction of travel on the property. If the person begins looking in windows or trying doors, the video feed is sent to your alarm company for visual verification, and if needed they contact you and dispatch the necessary officials. As everyone is out of the house, roombas (vacuums and mops) are going around cleaning everything As dusk sets in, your home's exterior security (landscaping) lights slowly ramp up to maintain a minimum illumination for your CCTV cameras and your neighbors to be able to see around your property. As your day comes to a close, you get in your car, and your home is notified that you are on the way back based on your patterns. Your ETA is tracked and your home gauges home much time is needed to bring the home back up to occupied environmental conditions. Your water heater ramps up, hot water is circulated, and the HVAC system brings the temperature back up or down to an efficient point based on outdoor reset. As your car is detected pulling into your driveway, your exterior lights come up to a welcome mode. As you exit your vehicle, the alarm system changes only the front door to disarmed, unlocks the door, and turns on your entry lights. As you walk through the front door, your home announces a status of the exterior and room motion detectors "Yard and rooms all clear, would you care to disarm the home?" You reply "Yes" and it sets the security system to off, and your phone calls are routed to your home phone so that you can put your phone on the charger and leave it alone. As you walk towards each room the lights ramp up and your music follows you, with the lights and music slowly dimming out as you leave each room. As the rest of your family heads home, your assistant gives and ETA so that you can prepare a dinner. Based on what your system's inventory of your food knows you have, it makes a recommendation on what to make in the time allotted - you make a selection verbally. As you walk into the kitchen to make dinner, your over preheats to the correct temperature for the recipe you've selected and the recipe is displayed on the counter where you will prepare your food. As you measure out each ingredient needed, the assistant listens and checks off each ingredient, and highlights your next steps. As you finish the preparation, the system detects that you've opened the oven, and that you've inserted a dish with the weight of the recipe, and as your close the oven door, the system announces it has begun the timer for you. As the rest of your family get home their phone calls are routed to the home phones. You get to talk with your wife and family as they do their homework and make plans for the rest of the week. Your system tells you when it's time to set the table, so that when you are finished, the cooking will be done and it'll be ready to plate. As you sit down to dinner, the system inventories that the phones are on their charging cradles in their respective owner's rooms, and the home phone is put into screening mode, while the WiFi is throttled or turned off. As you finish eating, the hot water is again circulated so that it's ready for cleanup. As your children's bedtimes approach, their rooms are warmed up to promote sleep, and over >15 minutes the color temperature of your lights shift to a warmer white. As your children get into bed, the temperature in their rooms begins a slow hour-long ramp to a lower temperature. As you shuffle off to your room for the evening, the exterior doors are again locked, the blinds are drawn closed, and the alarm sets itself to a home/armed. The lights in the unoccupied rooms fade to off, and the nightlights to the floor gently illuminate the major walkways. Your closet and bathroom lights ramp up so that you can get ready for bed, you are asked by your assistant if there are any last minute reminders you need to set which you do verbally and verify on your smart mirror. As you walk into your room from the bathroom, the bathroom lights fade to off, and the water heater settles in for the night. As you get into bed, the lights slowly dim and become more yellow, targeting an "off-time" of at least 8 hours before your next wake alarm is set. Your home phones is set to screening mode again, with automatic ring-through if it's a family or know urgent number, your WiFi is again throttled or turned off to encourage kids to sleep. You fall asleep, having not had to touch a single remote control or push a button on or look at the status of a wall controller all day, and everything operated as if your home "knew you like an old friend". As you sleep, roombas quietly go around the rooms with high foot traffic from when you and your family were awake to prepare for another busy day. That's automation, and most fo that can be easily done today, some of it is still possible.doable, but a bit harder.

Can't deny that there has been a lot of work put into this project tho and kudos for that ! But also agree with the above comment. Although needing a lot more work than ready made systems, automation like you mentioned is possible with open source platforms as well (openHAB & Home Assistant) and that is great news I think for any DIY'er .

"When i get home and my mobile connects to my wifi from 50mts from home, my gate opens + the outside light switches on based on a solar switch(Night) + 10 seconds later the garage door opens. When i drive into the garage, i select "Arrival" on my app and my gate and garage door closes immediately and 1 min later, the lights switch off. The best part is that IF i do not select "Arrival" within 90 seconds, the security system panic is triggered and the security call me to check if all is ok while an armed response is on their way...." ...but enough of the dream life. Can someone make it come true!

Yes voice command is very cool but a bit combersum if you ask me and does have a lag very minor but still. I just set everything on my set up as relay switches. One switch controls TV and all devices. Another contolls the PC and all connected devices. No talking no waiting.

Wow young man, (how old are you)? You have come a long way. This all looks great! You have done a great job. You should be very proud of your work. This reminds me of the things that I used to try when I was young and only had "my" room to work with. I'm 55 now, so there was not much technology to work with back then. But sometimes Popular Science magazine would give me a great idea. I really like your videos.

I hate it when people consider a bunch of relays attached to a network connected device "smart". I mean don't get me wrong, this is very cool, but cmon, all you're doing for the majority (apart from LED strips & chrome cast etc.) is cutting power using relays. Why not use IR blasters for your TV and possibly the monitors (idk if those dell monitors have IR receivers)? This would allow you to add a whole lot of other functionality such as changing the volume, channel, source, brightness etc.
@mathiasbraunling368

I guess because for many people this is what they consider 'smart'. Turning on and off devices by using a tablet or smartphone or voice control.

Yeh, it's really just a voice driven remote control, which isn't automation. In a lot of cases it's because the automation software doesn't have a custom voice control interface, it may just be emulating a Hue or using the simple lighting skill, which really limits what you can do. In our CQC automation platform we have a fully custom interface, so you can define your commands and set up CQC to do whatever you want in response to them, and you can return arbitrary text to be spoken back to the user. That allows for really nice information queries. It makes a lot of difference in terms of what you can do.

I agre Stew! Now, if the “network relay” devices turned themselves on and off without any user input depending on different variables that would be “smart” or fully automated.

You should look to convert your websocket setup to Firebase as the latency is minor. Good job on building most of this I'm React/ React Native? I actually contributed quite a lot to the material design repo you seem to have used on the web interface. Awesome to see this kind of home automation being built from scratch as its usually left to the big companies to mass produce this kind of stuff. Subscribed to your channel as I have high hopes for you. 👍

Very well done. I just subscribed and am in the process or converting my home into a wireless smarthome. My wife and I are both retired and have health issues that make as much voice activation as possible important. I also designed our home ( I'm a retired Structural Engineer and my wife a retired Nurse have been living in the desert of Southeastern California's Coachella Valley for the last 24 years. We also want to protect the property outside our home which only requires adding camera's in the front of our home. We do use the Echo Dot and the tall Echo Alexa in the Great room to provide accessibility. I am specifically interested in the basic setup to obtain a storong Fios system throughout the home by setting up a wireless bridge using the initial wireless FIOS Router for basic direct connect to Mayo Clinic for clear connection of my wife's Pacemaker monitor with Mayo Clinic's Pacemaker Clinic, an M-Cell signal booster for areas where we are at the farthest location to our AT&T Cell Towers. We are using an Asus RT-N66W Dual Band wireless router as a wireless Bridge so that every location on the property is able to get a strong wireless connection. The Asus router also allows me to program my VPN directly into the router protecting my home from hackers and preventing anyone from following our browsing habits. I use Privateinternetaccess.com which is a tested service that was unable to provide the FBI with a log of their clients browsing habits. PIA has more than 3600 private servers the tunnel data and information around the world. It can be placed on five devices at one time or if installed in the router will threat hundreds of wireless devices as only one device. Controlling a VPN wireless bridge also protects the outside devices on a smarthome hub which controls a driveway gate, flood cameras and the exterior lighting. Finally, we cut the cord to DirecTV or Cable and are using Amazon Prime, Netflix and Set Now, a multiple server IPTV service that is $20 per month (currently being trial tested before committing). Having a reliable IPTV live station setup is similar to the requirements of fifty years ago when we relied on Shortwave communications. Finally, I like your colored lighting and ceiling or lamp lighting. I wish to do this inside and out as well as adding led straps to areas to prevent falls or tripping over our four large dogs at night. You've started on a great plan to help educate the public who have not taken the time to learn to use these tools. I've spent my last seven years of retirement covering not only Smarthome setup but Genetics and Gene Editing using the latest tools so easy to understand and use to correct one or a thousand mutated DNA marker within a blood cell that can begin curing more than 60,000 recorded genetic mutations do those suffering with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, ALS and other diseases that will be cured and literally wiped off the face to the Earth. If you're interested is learning about this I highly recommend a book that brings the discussion down to a layperson Understanding;" www.amazon.com/Crack-Creation-Editing-Unthinkable-Evolution/dp/0544716949 ( the future is wide open to the newest technology with an opportunity to begin now instead of waiting for other countries to take the lead. It's also the next generation of small but stable start-ups that need money but if carefully chosen can create jobs and new patents that others seeking only to invest. " Crack in Creation; Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution" by Jennifer A Doudna, PhD and Samuel F. Sternberg, PhD. The authors are the Bio-geneticist who have patented the next explosion of safe and effective methods patented under by the University of California Regents who license the technology and have the ability of changing just on of four genetic codes in a helix of Billions using a lab created template (CRISPR-CAS9) on a test tube of human blood which can be verified that the documented gene mutation has been corrected and while riding on the back of a harmless virus fage will begin attacking specific mutated cells and correcting them throughout the Host's body. Once done the disease is permanently eradicated from the host and if planning a family, the mutation will be gone in all future generations. I know I digress ed from the original topic, but I got the impression that you are a intelligent young man with your entire future ahead of you. I gave you this information only to show you how large the field is for those not afraid of taking a leap into the math and Sciences. The last piece of advice come from the nearly 70 year old retired Structural Engineer ; I graduated in the lower third of my high school in Illinois. I over music and I've been a blues guitarist for nearly sixty years. I realized I simply did not have the talent to make it in the field of music and I have a definite dislike of Authority figures. I failed at and was fired from many jobs including the family owned business. When I turned 30 years old I realized I needed to find my direction and return to school. I've been to seven college in 17 years. I met a handful of wonderful teachers who helped me understand the practicality of math on physics and I turned to Civil / Structural Engineering. My expertise was in Seismic Retrofit of pre-1969 Unreinforced and Adobe Structures to retrofit them to resist Earthquakes and high Wind events. Because I'm inherently lazy, I used spreadsheet software to write complex computer modeling software that could design the most economical solution that would improve the performance of a large four story Unreinforced Masonry structure that people of low income and up can reside in and would be affordable and safe. Inasmuch as no structure is earthquake or hurricane "Proof" the building would provide sufficient safety to allow people to get safely out. So, why am I talking about Genetics and Gene Editing? In 2014 my wife and I spent six weeks at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. My wife has had serious complete for nearly the last almost forty years we've been together. Her complaints were legitimate and serious as she lost a lot of weight and was unable to stand without assistance, and had trouble with the simplest tasks like opening a bottle is jar. After six weeks, and the conformation through Genetic testing, she was diagnosed with a rare form of adult onset Muscular Dystrophy called "Myotonic Dystrophy Type 2. It is a progressive disease and it affects every muscle in the body. At nearly 70 years old, my brain is still functioning and capable of learning. Since most of my education is self taught I am determined to keep my wife on the cutting edge to science not just because I love her, but because by leaving what helps her I can also help others. This isn't about money or wealth. I spent the last 30 years as a Structural Engineer because I loved it. I'm not motivated by money. However, unless you have a wealthy family or a Trust fund in today's world, your going to have to understand the business side of whatever you do and profit from it. If you don't love what you do and you stubbornly stay in a position that doesn't motivate you then you may as well get out and really find your niche in life to make your mark on society. You, my friend, are at a good starting point. By teaching others you begin to leave you mark, your potential for immortality. If you live on this planet and contribute nothing you are only taking up space. The future is for those creative educator who are willing to think outside the Cox where the boundaries for creativity do not exist. I think you are at the threshold of the door. If you are ever interested in exploring or tapping into the brain of this old guy, reply or contact me on Facebook and I'll be happy to discuss this with you. I would love to see anyone like you reach your potential. Good luck to you and I'll be following your other videos.

NICE MAN! very impressive, though I do recommend not telling everyone to visit your page as its no where near finished. Maybe do something more simple while you get the other stuff up. Just looks more professional IMO. . Maybe consider FIVER to distribute workload/ get some things done faster. Just an idea. good luck to you my friend.

First of all I'd like to thank you for your efforts but I have a question and I hope you answer me . i have been started following the guides three monthes ago .. i have been finished the network then the home automation server then openhab and remote access .. now i stopped at adding the devices .. my pivotal confusion is that i found that sonoff and shelly , for example , provides much simpler systems that doesn't need rasbperry pi or openhab , you just attach the device ( switch , plug . ...etc ) with electricity and bind it with thier own app , that simple . the question is why i would be forced to use a complex system while there is more simpler systems provided ?

Are the devices really that responsive, or did you edit the video? Secondly, how did you get devices to actually power on and such? It seems I can only get power to mine, but not actually turn on, similar to what you had with your Xbox. >.
@MKSmartHouse

Yes, they really are that responsive! The stuff that automatically power on like the tv have a feature that when AC power is cut from the TV it will automatically turn on when power is restored.

Hey man, very cool video. I'm a developer and I started to get interested on making a project like yours. I understand that you use some kind of smart outlets, or something, I have this doubt, how would you tell you outlet to turn on via what looks to be a custom made app? Do those outlets have some kind of API or how does that really work? If you could point me on the right direction I would appreciate. Subcribed you channe btw ;)

A problem, Xbox running a game and someone walks in, "Alexa turn off TV setup". Possible missing data and or corrupted drive since it turns it off from the power supply instead of the power button on the xbox.

god mode for me (i'm easily pleased) would be the ability to see my room temp and being able to turn on my heating or a fan from my phone in bed, so i guess an esp8266 with a temp sensor and 2 relays, i have no hub.router.internet/other wifi, it would be just a direct connection from this impossible device to my phone..... subbed.
