Martha tent supplies: bit.ly/3FFDMOA
Start growing edible or medicinal mushrooms using the Martha Tek, or technique. In this video, we show you the step-by-step process of building and maintaining a Martha Tent with alternate builds to fit your budget and space requirements. You can find these materials online or at your local hardware or hydroponic store (see our recommendations below).
We show you how to dial in the environmental conditions of your Martha Tent and highlight the four conditions fundamental to mushroom growing: humidity, fresh air exchange, temperature, and light.
Get started growing your own edible or medicinal mushrooms by building your own Martha Tent! Martha Tents are mid-sized fruiting chambers designed to simulate the proper environment for fruiting mushrooms in trays, blocks, and jars.
Martha Tents are the surest way to grow beautiful flushes of mushrooms indoors, regardless if you're a small-scale cultivator or a commercial producer. They can fit inside any closet, kitchen, or basement, or be scaled up to fruit pounds of edible or medicinal mushrooms every week.

I think you might have better results if you swapped the humidifier and the fan locations. Co2 is heavy so it collects at the bottom, resulting in fuzzy feet and fruits that are reaching for air. You need to flush out the Co2 collecting at the bottom. Also the humidifier being at the top will cause the moisture to fall down and cover all the cakes below it, and not just pool humidity, mostly at the bottom of the tent. ✌🍄
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 2 года назад
You're definitely right that some folks will flip the humidifier and fan around with success. However, we've found that funneling the air up and through the fan instead of down, reduces the "splash" effect at the bottom of the tent, thus reducing spores released into the environment. The openings at the bottom also provide a perfect place to pull in fresh air.

great idea brother! thanks! Best tip yes. well 2nd I have see other than praise. And as Einstein said; Anyone can make things more complex and unimaginable! It takes a touch of genius to go in the opposite direction! I just had an epiphany also! the fan I believe may also work better on a timer. say half on and an hour off maybe as to not compete with the humidifier?
@siov4279

double down! I also think growing a plant in together with the mushroom's could actually help with co2 as well!

Mushroom spores on average are 10microns. For those concerned about venting into living spaces I would suggest getting a 4 inch filter sock used in saltwater aquariums. It's easy to find 1 micron or 10 for cheap and since it's 4 inches it should fit perfect on the fan.

I think technically your filter should be on the intake side. On the exhaust side, you're going to both overheat your fan and you're going to clog your fan with dirt and spores. Most filter systems are on the intake side of the air.

@@michaelwilliams1525 that's not the point being made. I am new to mushroom growing. The first mushrooms I grew were from the company Back to the Roots mushroom grow kit my sister-in-law gave me. I got three crops from them. Now I'd like to do more so the Martha tent was very inspiring. I live in Alabama now and my brother just purchased more land with a huge metal shop. We both love mushrooms so who knows where this could go. Maybe we'll start with farmers markets. Thank you so much for the inspiration. For quite some time I ran a cool mist humidifier Blowing into the Martha, it doesn't create a high pressure and is more than sufficient for air flow with the plus side of not ballooning the Martha. Finding just the right interval with a timer was all that was ever needed. One could make a Martha for sufficiently cheaper than this. I had a metal rack system that we covered with 4 mil and duct sealed the corners to make a large Martha. I had all the supplies and found the rack for free. I love that someone is putting this out there on RU-vid, I truly commend you for the clear concise articulation and effort. Truly is a recipe for success 👍

I had the most low maintenance set of Marthas that Stamets helped with. I'm sure the guide I put together is still floating around on Shroomery. It is remarkable at how simple running a Martha is. The secret that most people tend to forget is: find the most thermally and hydromatically consistent/stable place you can for it (ie basement, not the laundry room or Garage if you can.) It makes the world's difference in seasonal temperature shifts, especially coming into summer and winter.

What type of fan did you install? I have searched for HVAC fans, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Thanks for your content. You're well spoken, down to your speed and annunciation while educating. You've not only inspired me to expand my indoor and outdoor gardens and vermicomposting, into a mushroom farm / fungiculture realm too. You have also solidified, definitely, on my curiosity if I should "spend the time" to be an educational content creator for "homesteading", but more specifically vermiculture and fungiculture. I had talked myself into only my music, but if people didn't share this kind of knowledge.. The kind not a lot of people are looking for, then people like myself would have never found it. Thank you, because damn it really goes to show that anyone can really impact someones life for the better, and I really needed it. If someone was restricted to temporarily only having the option of using a filter over the fan for circulation, what filters do you recommend, how often do you change them? I typically use charcoal filter rolls you can purchase off of places like amazon and cut to size.. I know that activated charcoal can pull impurities out of the air due to ionization, however... by no means do I want to introduce mold / fungi spores into my living space on accident. Thanks in advance for anyone who responds.

I tried setting up my first one in our laundry room and it had fruit flies in it within 3 days. My next one is going inside my lab where I have a laminar flow Hood to keep the air clean

Hi, I've been slowly putting together my home lab and fruiting space. I don't have any real room for fruiting mushrooms inside my apartment, however I do have space outside in my covered patio (concrete flooring), and was wondering if I could set up a Martha tent out there? I live in the PNW so generally the outdoor temps and humidity are quite favorable for mushrooms (I already have wild ones growing in nearby landscaping lol) Appreciate all the content and knowledge you put out 👍🏽

Awesome video, as usual! Quick question - wondering what type/pore size of filter you'd recommend if venting into a living space (as opposed to exhaust going out of a window)? Thanks much!!

Amazingly informative! Thanks so much, Im looking into buying the same humidifier for this rig with the temperature controller, how often do you have to replace the water for the humidifier in a system like this?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 2 года назад
This will vary depending on the humidity you have your tent set to, ambient humidity etc. For example, if you live in the desert where humidity is always very low, you'll run out faster than if you live in a swampy area. Winter and Summer will differ as well. That said, checking it at least 2 times a day is good practice.

Really fantastic walk through and explanations! I've often seen Martha tents with the humidity at the top and fan at the bottom, do you notice any differences with this setup?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 2 года назад
You're definitely right that some folks will flip the humidifier and fan around with success. However, we've found that funneling the air up and through the fan instead of down, reduces the "splash" effect at the bottom of the tent, thus reducing spores released into the environment. The openings at the bottom also provide a perfect place to pull in fresh air.

amazing video! thanks so much for sharing..the room that your martha tent is in, does it need to be temperature controlled with air conditioning or heating? we are in colorado and have a huge mudroom with windows, ideal for a grow room.. but it gets real hot in summer and real cold in winter..thanks !

I liked this video so much I bought a Martha tent kit from you. I had a few questions. It seems the vaporizer steam condenses on the spore pan and a significant amount pools there. This is difficult to clean and/or remove when the tent is in operation. It seems you might have had the same issue in your video. This seems like if it becomes stagnant water at the bottom, it might cause problems of mold and is not getting all the water from the vaporizer into the air to raise the humidity. Wonder if you see this as a problem and what solutions you might have. I wonder how often the fan has to come on, and at what speed? I put mine on the lowest setting possible and on a timer so it only comes on at intervals. Have you found an optimum fan speed and frequency of on/orr? Has anyone experimented with putting SOME hydrogen peroxide in the vaporizer as it would add oxygen to the inside of the tent when the vaporizer is on. If so, what amounts/ratio to water? Can you think of a downside to adding peroxide to the vaporizer? You look and sound like a guy I worked with at Fedco named Adam. If I lived closer I would be interested in working with you folks as you have a great operation there and great people! Thanks for all you do! Tom L

hey how has your grow been going? Im also trying to find optimal fan times, any tips appreciated!
@NorthSpore

It absolutely requires regular sanitizing. A deep clean once a month should be sufficient. The fan sucks the humid air up, so if there is too much pooling, this requires balancing your humidity settings and your fan speed. We have not tried the peroxide and I'm not 100% regarding the safety of that.

I just posted the same question up top! I have not yet made one, though I have all the supplies on the way, the spore syringe millet spawn bag ETC... I'm going to try the Rogue Spore Mycology Still Air Box, Mushroom Cloning Box and SAB from amazon. that is because I do not currently have enough resources to make or buy a Laminar flow hood. and I had built my own sab 20 years ago when I purchased my first spore print from high times in about 2001. I did have a few petri's with contamination but I had some that I processed on to the grain medium that were clean also. I ended up getting arrested back then for DWAI and had to tell my parents where it was so it did not dry out and become a fire hazard unfortunately and thinking about it. I believe it should have been about ready to fruit by that time... Oh well. THIS TIME IS GONNA BE GREAT and I am psyched! I just hope the SAP is large enough for my hands??? But I fear the same thing. I do not want to put all this money into this and have it not work. I have ENOUGH JUNK!

Companion planting can work to some degree and a lot of people play around with it. I think you need a few plants to provide enough oxygen for one block. There are also pest issues. Give it a shot and share results!

I was a BRF guy for years and had lots of success. I'm wanting to shift to mono tubs and appreciate this helpful info. I'm going to attempt to use a 4" T to tap into an existing dryer vent duct, which will likely require a flap to prevent back flow into the tent system.
