Complete Snowblower Auger Gear Box Rebuild!
In this video I show how to do a complete auger gear box rebuild on a snowblower that didn't have the proper shear pins and thus caused internal damage.
This procedure will apply to most snowblowers.

Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) videos to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers and zero turn mowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

At 73 yrs old, I just spent 12 hrs on my knees, in the driveway, on Ground hog day, replacing the main drive bronze bushing, in my 2003 Arians 8.5/24. Yea I went through about 3 pairs of rubber gloves, had to use the torch on the pulley. and removed every part from the drive system and replaced the rubber drive wheel while at it. I couldn't find a video on this repair so I had to figure the whole thing out my self. You can't do this stuff in the nursing home. Your videos are always great. I wish you had done one on that bronze bushing. It might have saved me a few hrs.

Robert, nice job that shows you keep going, keep learning, keep succeeding. Just 1 thing, don't take on a big challenge like this on ground hog day - better to lay low so you don't get caught in a repetitious cycle!

What is really excellent about this video is that the process isn't easy-peasy like so many DIY videos which make the poor viewer think he can effortlessly fix the problem. Donyboy shows how to get around obstacles and gives hacks as to how best do the repair. Very nicely done.

I am STUNNED by the level of detail and teaching you are giving for this job. I am at 10:30 and you are giving pointers about the shear pin and I just have to say that my fears that this next generation not being able to fix their stuff are completely gone, all they will need to do is find one of your videos and they will be just fine! I had to learn things the hard way, what a gift it is to have your knowledge and experience available to everyone! Keep up the good work.

I have to fully agree with others comments. Your information is detailed......never assuming the viewer knows a supposed obvious step.....and i'm a big fan of getting close into the part you are working on......as opposed to some you tubers who put the camera 10 feet ftom the small part they are working on!!! Verbal and video detail is extremely important for instructional video.....which you do superbly!! Keep it up!!

This is the best how-to video I have ever seen on any subject. There are many excellent videos on various topics but most are amateurish and fair to poor quality overall. Very clear video of excellent quality but just as importantly every view provides good context of what you are doing, i.e., not too close and not too far away. Very clear audio and excellent description of every step. No repetition and no stumbling around, no extraneous information and no information left out - very well thought out.

I've done this repair a couple times. Some Kroil on that shaft will help it come out. Kroil on the bearing also helps far better than penetrating oil. I use 1/4 inch x 2 1/2 inch CARRIAGE BOLTS and RED WIRE NUTS for the shear pins. They can be quickly changed out in the snow with gloves on. I used a sanding sponge to clean the crud off the auger shaft before sliding the case off. I have never had to pound so hard. SearsPartsDirect sold me the parts. The phone agents can often discount the parts to better than the discount parts distributors. Murray/Craftsman specs a cold weather Lubriplate for the gear box with a brass worm gear. I made a blade adapter so I can convert the snow blower to a snow plow by removing the blower housing. It works great for sidewalk maintenance when the city requires sidewalks to stay clean even when there is not enough snow to blow it.

I replaced my broken shear pins with stainless steel bolts thinking "Well, that shouldn't happen again". I was right. I completely mangled the gear box instead. After watching this video I ordered a complete set of parts the week before the snow came in October 2019 and they arrived April 2020, the week after the snow melted! I am going to start putting my baby back together tomorrow. I am so happy to have found this video, it has made me confident to tackle the repair and save myself 100's of dollars. Great work! You make it all look easy. Even when it's putting up a fight, you power right through it. It took me several hours just to get the pulley off of an older, mid 90's Atlas. After two different pullers, heating it, hammering it, etc., that pulley was destroyed. It began to tear around the sleeve that goes over the shaft, so I ended up cutting it off. The bearing put up a similar fight. I'll probably end up needing to change the impeller shaft now. The snowblower worked ok to begin with, but wasn't throwing snow very well. And I noticed that impeller pulley/shaft was making noise in the housing (like a quiet cement mixer) and moving up and down inside the bearing, rather than turning smoothly. So I believe all that was causing extra drag on the impeller. I'm just taking apart the gearbox, checking it and re-greasing everything since I have it tore down this far. Low and behold, even the front augers are seized to the front shaft and don't want to come off. Same deal as yours where they had regular bolts in those augers instead of shear bolts. And someone else was here before me as well, because there were already pry marks and slight bends in the pulley. I don't think they ever got it off though. I think they gave up and just decided to use it the way it was. haha. Subscribed!

I have a Bolens 824 with a bad gearbox that's been sitting in my shed for more than a few years. At the time it failed the price on a new gearbox was quite high so I purchased a new Ariens to replace it. Always loved the snowblower and it gave me about thirty years of good service. I may price out the gears and bushings and fix that beast after watching this very well documented repair video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you. Very practical and down to earth repair video. My first snow thrower was a Craftsman branded unit. I did learn something I wasn’t aware of previously and that relates to overtightening of the shear bolts. I have a Honda snow thrower now and the auger shear bolts in that are tightened fully. I’ll say one thing about the Craftsman unit, everything was fixable and it was not overly complex. I got twelve years from mine when I declined to invest in a new auger housing - rusted, the engine was still running fine. Just a couple of final things... One relates to wrench sizes and bolt sizes. In the SAE world, a 1/2” wrench fits a 5/16” bolt, so the bolt (3:30) is not 1/2” If a 1/2" wrench fits it. Additionally, clevis pins are not hair clips (1:55). I am not meaning to be critical, just thought you would want to know.
