Completely Restored VW Bus Wheel Well (Seat Pedestal)

In this video I painstakingly restore the original seat pedestal on the drivers side of the bus. Definitely a challenging rust repair that forced me to think outside the box using just the tools and metal I had in the garage.
I narrated the parts that needed explaining and left the satisfying sounds of the garage for the rest of the video. Thanks for all the comments and new followers!

Awesome! As a Brazilian fan of classic cars, I was amazed watching this restoration video. Witnessing the craftsmanship and creativity involved in turning wood into metal was fantastic! The dedication to preserving the original metal, despite the tool limitations, truly shows the love for the vehicle. Congratulations on the incredible outcome! 🇧🇷🚐💪

My Father was a teacher and an avid VW Bus and Bug man. As a child, every summer we would pile into our bus and go camping and travailing around the North East. Those memories I hold dear. I love watching your channel because because those old busses mean so much to me. Thank you for saving one more and letting me watch your process.

Nice! Reuse, good, pre-shaped metal, the wooden mold, heating the metal before forming it, removing the paint in order to cut as llittle as possible (and to not miss any rust). It all makes so much sense. Small , fast and superhot welds, would be interesting to compare the heat transfer to the surrounding metal with an infrared camera.

I would have built a wood block mold too and banged those channels into place. That's how i know its probably wrong, but you cant argue with the results. The channels give it structure and strength, and the panel fit in place, way to save some bucks not buying a whole new panel, yeah you had to throw some extra work at it but it fits nice and nobody is going to see it, it'll have flooring or a seat on it. I like it.

There is a guy called fitzee on youtube that does metal fabrication in a similar way to you. When he has a gap to fill such as the one you had with that green metal piece, he fills the gap as he welds using the metal from an old coat hanger, works well for him....😊

Great job 👍 dont know if you know this, but if your repair panel has some gaps in it bigger than what you can spot weld together use a copper block behind the gap and fill in from the edges. Weld metal wont stick to copper, then flip the part over lightly grind out the backside being careful to not go all the way through, and spot weld the back side so you have full penetration 😁👍. Love the attention you have to detal 👍
@BrandonsBus

Being on a fixed income I also reuse blast media, I have a dedicated vacuum ($10 garage sale) and 2 screens to filter it before reuse. One point is every use dulls the media to the point of not doing its job, I don't think I've ever gotten 7 uses from it.

Be real careful when it comes to welding anywhere around the perimeter of the door openings, especially the bottom of the door. The fit from the factory isn’t great and sometimes the doors rub even in stock form. Definitely fit the doors and add some weight to them to replicate the door glass and stuff. Make sure everything closes and also that there is room for weatherstripping. You DONT want to find out after paint that the weatherstripping doesn’t fit. On all my projects I buy high quality weatherstripping and test fit as I’m doing metal repair.
@BrandonsBus
@BrandonsBus Год назад
Great tips! I really do need to order a piece of weatherstripping so I can test fit more accurately.
@neilkennykenny4113
@neilkennykenny4113 11 месяцев назад
Good advise, adding the weight to account for whats going to be hanging from the door later. II would of presumed the factory finish would of been spot on. But now that you mentioned it my father back in the early 80s had a T3 pickup (sky blue) boxer engine 30 miles to the gallon 😂 and the doors used to snag as he closed them.

I've been metal fabing for a long time professionally. And honestly using OG metal is my preferred method. New metal isn't the same thickness as OG metal. OG German metal is exactly 1mm thick and OG American metal is exactly 19ga. For new metal you have 2 options 18ga or 20ga. Which isn't 1mm or 19ga

Sandblasting should be a last resort it changes the metal chemical and wire brush stripping is the best
