Democracynow.org - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, activist and Presbyterian minister Chris Hedges, whose latest book is "Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle," spoke Saturday at New York’s "Rise Up October" rally and march to end police violence. In his address, Hedges spoke about the effects that police violence and mass incarceration has on families. "There are husbands and wives severed, sometimes forever, from their spouses," said Hedges. "There are sisters and brothers that have been torn apart, but this morning we remember most the children, those whose mothers and fathers are locked behind bars or whose parents will never come home again, whose tiny lives have been shattered, whose childhoods have been stolen, who endure the painful stigma of loss or of having a mother or father in prison and cannot comprehend the cruelty of this world."

Presbyterian minister, Chris Hedges, sure sounds unrelated to Presbyterian candidate, Donald Trump.

religion is what got us here.

No. Humans are what got us here. You're blaming something that relies on the intent of the person wielding it to function. It's the same mistake people make when they say that guns kill people. Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

+Gabriel360LIVE I disagree, religion tells you what to do; therefore, it builds your core of identity. Some good examples you can think of: colonization in the name of God and the Dark Ages

Religion is necessary for some but it doesn't have a monopoly on morality. Religion has played a role in slowing down progress on certain issues. It also played a role in progressive movements and reform. Economic inequality can be tied to corporate greed, Political indifference about poverty and fascist and crony capitalism. Police Brutality can be tied to an Amoral justice system, America not owning up to hypocrisy of its ideal versus its true dark history, hero worship of law enforcement inspite of it being an extension of the establishment and the state giving it workers immunity from prosecution inspite of the evidence.

***** You're making the same mistake I've already pointed out. You're blaming the thing that has no intention one way or the other rather than the person. Let's look at exactly what you're saying: "...religion tells people what to do..." Does religion have a mouth? No. PEOPLE who lead religions have mouths. PEOPLE tell you what to do. It's your choice to follow or not. And if it's not religion, if religion isn't the excuse to visit harm on another person, then something else will be the excuse. But religion, itself, isn't bad because it doesn't have intention nor can it choose. Yes, religion is continuously at the center of bad things at the hands of bad people, but religion, every single day, is used by responsible people as a force for good. The problem is people, how they choose to use religion. Would you say that a Buddhist sitting in a temple somewhere, not harming even an insect, is a threat to anyone or that his religion is somehow bad? Of course you wouldn't (if you're being honest with yourself). Finally, let's look at people who are religious and yet choose to do what they believe is right within their religion. Do all believers of a certain religion follow the holy book of their religion to the letter? Nope. People who identify with the same religion can and do choose to follow that same religion in their own way. That's why we have different forms of Christianity, for example. That's why we have Muslims who push for their religion to be of peace even while some Muslims use it as an excuse for violence. Again, it's up to people to decide how religion is followed and used. Saying that religion is a problem is like saying that guns are a problem. In either case, you're not addressing the real problem and, as such, you'll never find a real solution.
