Component Model: The Final Abstraction - Taylor Thomas & Liam Randall, Cosmonic
Building applications is fraught with negotiating non-functional requirements, and wrangling vulnerabilities in imported libraries. A study by Deloitte shows developers spend up to 80% of their time managing, maintaining NFRs. Kubernetes went a long way to abstract complexity in the great lift and shift to the cloud. Kubernetes has issues, though. A) it doesn't solve the overhead of managing containerized applications. B) Running Kubernetes is costly and underutilized. Wasm seems to be “what comes after containers”. Its tiny size, security and portability are unlocking gains for early adopters like Adobe, Amazon and Figma. This talk explores how the Component Model, the next great technical abstraction, will address common complexities inherent in the management of the day-to-day application dependencies, embedded into every application. We'll cover the cost of operating applications distributed horizontally across clouds and edges to achieve application reliability and performance.
