The Sunnatch Component to HDMI Scaler will scale, deinterlace, and convert component video to HDMI. With broad compatibility and performance above its price, chances are your component devices will look better than before on your modern TV or monitor. Selectable output modes and good latency performance means the Sunnatch Component to HDMI Scaler outputs accurate video in both 4:3 and 16:9 format that is a very playable experience on older consoles.
This video is a detailed review of the Sunnatch Component to HDMI Scaler where I unbox and test input at 480i/p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080P from both the XBOX 360 and Sega Genesis with HD Retrovision component cable. The Sunnatch component to HDMI scaler also support 576i/p however I was not able to test these modes, but based on the performance across the other modes, I would be surprised if this component to HDMI converter does not measure up.
I test upscale, downscale, deinterlace, and conversion including sample footage for you to check out. If you are looking for a component to HDMI converter that delivers, the Sunnatch could be the right choice. This component to HDMI scaler should not be this good for $35 usd (at the time of recording).
Thanks for watching!

@@askdrtkNuts! I just purchased one (though, not scheduled to arrive for another month) and it'll be a shame if QC drops the ball. I've gone through 3 different Wii2Hdmi style adapters as well as a component to HDMI converter and I still can't get it to work reliably with our QN90a Samsung TV. If I connect the component cables directly to an old TV it works great right away. The confusing part is that the HDMI video issue eventually resolves itself. It's almost as if something just needs to warm up. For the first half hour (when trying to use an HDMI connection) the TV does not recognize there is a signal. Eventually, the Wii's video comes up for just a second and then disconnects soon after and does this over and over for about 5 minutes. If I hit the Wii's home button, the menu that pops up displays on the screen and stays up until I close out of that menu . Once I try and do anything else on screen, it goes back to video feed cutting in and out. However, after a few more minutes of this, the video eventually stays on and working without issue for as long as we play. I thought maybe it was the Wii, but it works with components no problem. I tried two other HDMI cables but no change (granted, one was another 15 footer, the other was two feet). The old TV with the component input also has HDMI input but didn't work with it either. So, it's not the Wii, not the cable, not the TV...but, ALL the adapters? I just can't figure it out. My Wii is first gen (with the Gamecube board) so I'm not sure if that matters. I'm really hoping the one you suggested in this video is the key to success. Hopefully being able to toggle between the different output resolutions will help with signal recognition.

Hello, do you have any recommendations for a cheap component to HDMI device for my PS2? I need it to display or convert in a way the 480i(of PS2's menu and some games) for my monitor that supports only progressive resolutions(minimum 480p). I tried to order a Portta scaler device after hearing that its the best for price+quality(you also did a review on it), unfortunately, the order from Amazon cannot arrive in my city, forcing me to search other alternatives. From what I learned, to fix this I need a component to HDMI that has a line doubler function, at this point I just want to have the PS2 display everything on my monitor without relying on a chinese HDMI dongle that I currently have(cannot display interlaced resolutions like the 480i) and needs me to navigate blindly until I start a game with progressive scan. I don't care about the visual quality or any other gimmick(though, would be nice to avoid the bob deinterlacing, the upper shacking/tremble thing if you know about it). Thank you!
@askdrtk

The 480i is generally less of an issue vs 240p for most scalers. This converter from Sunnatch scales and deinterlaces 480i to 480p, 720p, and 1080p, however like most scalers, it doesn't claim to natively support 240p which many games use on the PS2 and other consoles. The Retrotink 2x Pro and 5x Pro both support 240p and 480i among other resolutions and work very well with the PS2, however neither is priced in the "budget" category. I can't recommend others without having tested them myself, and so I have actually been working on a video to test 240p /480i with a few scalers...coming soon...(i am assembling a set of test devices that display both resolutions). Thanks for the great question!

@askdrtk 2 года назад
Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been testing the Mcbazel ODV converter. It supports both 480i / 240p and switches quickly on the fly with the PS2 menus/games. It isn't an upscaler (I've been testing is with an mClassic between it and my Samsung Q80T television and have been very impressed). Unfortunately the ODV has been in very short supply (about the only place I could find them in stock is Amazon.ca of all places...) so I have been holding off on doing a review video until they are back in stock. There has been so much frustration with gear out of stock over the past two years that I didn't want to be the cause of even more disappointment... Hopefully supply will catch up soon!

I have this scaler for streaming games and it's pretty good, i played OG XBox racing games on it and i didn't noticed any weird input lag, which can be really bad in racing games. But it's just fine. The picture might not be as perfect as a Retrotink 5X, but it's still pretty good!
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing your experience with racing games, I find the same thing, latency is not an issue with this converter. The 5X is a great device - even at $300 USD it could be considered good value for what it can do, but keeping in mind the original experience we all had with many classic consoles and computers, given the price difference, whether it is 10 times better than the Sunnatch is another question...
@RaptorZX3
@RaptorZX3 2 года назад
@@askdrtk the Retrotink 5X may still be a good deal...but it's still 300$US+shipping (which would be around 400-420$CAN for me), which i would prefer to spend on something else. So this device is much cheaper and really good for the price, plus it have a resolution switch on it, which have 2 x 4:3 resolutions, 1 x 5:4 resolution, and 2 x 16:9 resolutions. So it doesn't force-stretch the picture like most scalers do out there, 4:3 picture stretched in 16:9 is ugly! Yes it's Component only, but it's doing a great job and i wanted something that can do at least 480p in 4:3. And i do have a Retrotink 2X Pro too, not using it right now but maybe in the future. the 2X Pro isn't good for newer consoles like the XBox, PS2 and Gamecube because it doesn't do 480p, only 480i and it's real ugly if it moves fast, because of the interlacing it's doing some kind of strange motion blur. So if you only want to do Component and everything in Progressive (480p up to 1080p), this Sunnatch device is awesome and not very expensive. Also this device is made by a few other different companies as well, like Easycel.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
I agree 100%. I also have a 2X Pro, but find I use the Sunnatch most often followed by my Portta converter scaler (XBOX 360) for the reasons you shared. I haven't gone for the 5X myself as (also being from Canada) $420CAN doesn't make sense for my use cases. The resolution switch with multiple aspect ratios on the Sunnatch works very well and the converter has never let me down, even with some older computers with composite video that is somewhat out of spec (VIC-20 , Apple IIc, etc..) I'm really glad you commented on the value of the Sunnatch converter as it seems many options get lost amongst the hype around RT and others... I don't think the Sunnatch get's the attention it deserves. Thanks again for for taking the time to share your experience with this converter - Let's keep original hardware alive!
@askdrtk

I should have mentioned that for the Vic-20 and Apple llc I convert the composite to component first and then use the Sunnatch as the Sunnatch of course requires component input. I find I get a better image with these devices using the two step conversion vs using the 2X... surprising to me...

Hello there, thank you for your videos on these converters. I have to purchase one because I want to connect my old dvd player (Pioneer DV-737, component video output 480i or 480p) to my new tv hdmi port. Unfortunately all tv manufacturers have ditched component video inputs in order to reduce price so now many old but good players became useless. Anyhow, I don't expect to reach the same image quality on the new 55" tv, but can you recommend a converter/upscaler which would do a decent job?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
Thanks for the question and the DV-737 is an excellent dvd player - one of the best I have seen. Some people like to go with the Retrotink 5X Pro, but it is really meant for video games and I have found you can get better image quality from DVDs using the following approach. For non-video game use I recommend the Portta converter scaler (my review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-moFVrfb1MT0.html ). This will get you from component to HDMI 1080p with great color and image clarity. Many people can stop there and be satisfied, but if you want to take things a step further, connect the HDMI output from the Portta to either an OREI XD-4000 or an mClassic / mCable scaler. These units will upscale the 1080p from the Portta to 4k. The combination of the Portta with one of the two 4k scalers produces outstanding image quality on large format televisions (I do this with a 65" QLED). Here are links for the OREI XD-4000: www.orei.com/products/xd4000-hdmi-video-converter-scaler-4k and the mClassic / mCable: www.marseilleinc.com/mclassic/ Hope this helps out!

I have a question, if I have the component holder I have to buy other cables so that the quality can be seen better, right? So if I buy the component cables for the xbox 360, would I have the yellow cable left over, would it look just as good or do I have to buy another more expensive adapter to have a scaler?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Год назад
Using component cables will provide a clearer image with better color compared to composite (yellow) only. If you use component, you will have the yellow (composite) cable left over - no connected. You could use composite (yellow) with a scaler, but again, you will notice a considerably better picture from component. I hope this helps out!

I'm considering a product like this for the Nintendo Wii. I do have the Wii component video cable, but the 50" 4K TV (Vizio V505-G9) doesn't have component inputs. I'm currently having a problem using the PORTHOLIC Wii to HDMI Converter 1080P, where when I attempt to set the Wii output to 480p and 16:9 widescreen. The picture alternates flashing a black screen with the normal output every second, so unusable, I can barely change Wii settings with this happening. I could get it to work with 480i 4:3 aspect ratio on screen. I'm using a 4K capable HDMI cable. I'd like to get upscaled progressive output that fills widescreen. The thing is, I had this working with the PORTHOLIC on a smaller 32" HDTV (Samsung UN32D4000ND 1360x768 display resolution). Any ideas what could be causing the flashing black with normal screen? I guess I'm trying to understand that before buying other products just hoping it works.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
There have been some issues with the Portholic as you describe. The flashing between a normal display and black screen is generally caused by sync / signal issues. This often happens with HDMI cables that don't meet the spec they advertise, especially if the length gets over 15 feet. I would recommend trying another brand / length of cable if you haven't already to confirm whether this is the issue. Your 32" Samsung is not 1080p but rather 720p, so it used less bandwidth on the cable. If the cable swap doesn't solve the issue, there can be incompatibilities between certain converters and televisions due to sync being slightly out of spec (some TV's are more flexible than others). I can tell you that I have tested the Sunnatch converter/scaler with a number of displays and had no sync issues. I would really check the cable first, because there are many cables that a marginal, regardless of their specs and price... Hope this helps out and let me know what you find.

@@askdrtk I appreciate the insight and tips! I'll try another HDMI cable I'm using elsewhere for debug, but if it is the HDMI cable, do you have any brand recommendations as I'd need to buy one? Also, the PORTTA Component to HDMI Converter with Scaler that you've also reviewed seems more known than the Sunnatch (neither have the best ratings) - I'm considering getting that instead, as 720p/1280p outputs are fine for me. Do you recommend the Sunnatch over the PORTTA? I only have the Wii that outputs 480p/480i, and no other old devices I'd use it with.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
The PORTTA is also a solid choice at this price point and works well with the Wii. The SUNNATCH has a few additional selectable output modes vs. the PORTTA which are great for older computers / consoles, for your application 720P and 1080P are all that are required and both support that well - conversion and scaling are on par imo. I always view ratings with some skepticism as there are so many reasons things don't always work as expected that are not always a direct result of the product itself...this is why I perform many tests with different sources / displays before posting a video. I will never catch everything and there are limits to the tests I can perform, but I try to cover very old school through "newly" vintage... I also have a Retrotink 2X Pro and while the color performance and scaling is superior to the PORTTA and SUNNATCH, I would be hard pressed to say that it is 4X better given the price difference. Of course this is only my opinion, and while I like top of the line performance as much as anyone, value isn't always found there depended on our needs...

I believe one of the reasons it performs well is that it does not scale, but only deinterlaces 480i and outputs 480p over HDMI. Once the composite signal is correctly deinterlaced and converted, scaling is less problematic whether it be in post production using Premiere or Resolve, or with hardware upscalers (the mCable cinema is an interesting option for this as it is optimized for videos and not gaming). Please keep me up to date with the BMD approach.

The Mcbazel ODV is a good step up. Image quality is superior, very low latency, and it also supports 240p which is something you don’t often get without spending more. I use one regularly and it has proven to be of good quality. It is very comparable to to Retrotink 2x pro, at a more affordable price. Hope this helps out!

Great question. I went back and checked the black levels of the individual captures with the scopes in Premiere and there is a small variance (less than 5%). It appears slightly more noticeable watching the rendered video from Premiere and even more noticeable watching it back on RU-vid. It appears the process of rendering in Premiere and RU-vid rendering / compression increases the variance. It is difficult to see any difference when connected directly to my monitors... Hope this helps out!

would this make my ps2 full screen or will it just be 720p at a 4:3 ratio?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
Thanks for the question! The mode switch allows you to choose output resolutions including whether aspect ratio is maintained (both 4:3 remains at 4:3 and 16:9 remains at 16:9) or stretched to fit. This works well for me as I like to play / view 4:3 as 4:3 and the same goes for 16:9, but for those wanting to stretch 4:3 to 16:9 the option is available. Hope this helps out and thanks again for checking out my review.

Hey Federico, that is a great question! Yes it is, and because the mClassic will accept all of the output formats from the Sunnatch converter, you can experiment with different combinations of Sunnatch video output and mClassic modes to get the best video for different sources. Thanks again for the question, you are going to be enjoying some great looking video from your retro gear.

Also, try to make sure the component cable is routed away from anything that could cause interference. Let me know how things go. It is also possible you received a defective converter - hope not, but the best thing again would be to test with another source.

Does it work with 240p?
@LucaTama

Hi! I'm sorry for my english (I'm italian) A little while ago I bought one of these converters (PORTTA Component to Hdmi, without scaler function) to try it on a Wii. The problem I had with this device is that, when I set the console to 480p, diagonal lines of noise appeared and moved all over the screen, all this did not occur with the other two resolutions (576i and 480i). I had also bought two wii2hdmi (one of a sub-brand, the other of Portholic), but the problem was always the same. I changed televisions, cables, stations and I could not solve the problem, so I thought it was the fault of the converters that I had bought and still looking for one that works well. The only way I was able to mitigate the problem was by activating a noise filter on my Samsung TV, but the problem only disappeared in the Wii menu, not in the games. On amazon Italy I can't find the Sunnatch scaler, but on the other hand there is the Easycel scaler (that seems to me identical to this one). So the question is as follows: since, at least as far as amazon Italy is concerned, this scaler costs 20€ more than the PORTTA converter, is it worth a try or is it better to buy a tv with component inputs in the future? Otherwise I wouldn't know what else to do... Grazie!
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
I have tested the Sunnatch (Easycell is the same) with the Wii at all resolutions (on several TVs) and it works without issue. Component ports on flat panel TVs generally have terrible latency, CRTs with component inputs work great. Based on my tests I would suggest giving the Easycell a try. Hope this helps out!

Hi, I'm back! I have been testing the Easycel scaler and I must say it does a good job. However, I still have a small problem: with both Portholic's Wii2Hdmi converter and PORTTA's converter the image was very clean and sharp, but there were these ghost lines that moved all over the screen, with the Easycel scaler it's the opposite, there are no more ghost lines but the image is much more blurred. Do you have any advice on how to fix this? I can't explain how it's possible...

This converter does not support 240p input which some of the older PS2 (and all PS1) games use. My preference (and the one I use for PS1/2 and retro computers) is the Mcbazel ODV. It supports 240p/480i and switches between resolutions quickly. It also has very low latency. They have a few newer models, but the original ODV has never let me down. The long-awaited RGB SCART cable for the Wii has finally arrived. What can I say? A real delusion. Very low quality on various televisions, low noise in the image but an unprecedented blur. A bit better than composite, but definitely a purchase that I recommend only in case you use a CRT TV. I also tried to play Wii games on my cousin's Wii U with backward compatibility, I must say that as far as I'm concerned is the best quality I've experienced. So drawing the various conclusions: -My TV sucks at lower resolutions, as does its internal scaler. -My parents' TV with component inputs is great for the Wii. -The Easycel scaler, despite my complaints (I'm Italian, it's in my DNA to complain), is the second best solution I've tried. The Wii U, on the other hand, is the absolute best for me. So, to recap everything, now I know the best solutions for me. All that's left is to choose one! With this epic over, I can finally thank you for the answers to all my whims. Have a great time!

Thanks for sharing the results with your Wii to SCART experiment - I'm sure it looked great on the CRT. Modern TVs usually have a difficult time scaling, so I try to handle that before the input. One other experiment I have been testing since I got a Mcbazel ODV (supports 240p in addition to 480i) in for review is connecting an mClassic between the converter output and the TV / monitor. This way I get a 4K upscale from the 480p output on the ODV. The mClassic also works with the Sunnatch and Portta. I am still testing content, but the results have been pretty impressive so far. I'm not ready to pronounce this the "5X killer" but it has been eye opening... There will be a video coming...

Mcbazel ODV: mcbazel.com/index.php/product/odv-composite-rca-s-video-ypbpr-to-hdmi-converter/ and mClassic: www.marseilleinc.com/mclassic/ (although an mCable would also work - I prefer to use my own cables...) I really like this setup as it offers composite, s-video, and component inputs - really flexible for a variety of consoles and vintage computers.

This is interesting, and could an ODV be better than the Easycel scaler? As for the mClassic I've seen a few videos, really good. I guess the combo with the ODV is great. Unfortunately the mClassic is not in my budget, plus I don't even know if they sell it in Europe.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
The good thing is that the mClassic can be an upgrade later on, but a good starting point for conversion to HDMI is needed first. I am going to include some side-by-side capture comparisons of the ODV, Sunnatch, Portta, etc. from the same sources in my review. It's quite a bit of work to get it all together, but as I said, the results are very interesting...

Would this work for a Canon XH-A1 camera (YPbPr output 1080i and then convert it to HDMI 1080p?) - As the Canon XH-A1 does not have an HDMI port and supports only up to 1080i via component out I am looking for a way to 1) Convert component to HDMI and 2) Have it in 1080p/60 resolution (BMD Atem requires 1080p/60).
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
Thanks for the question - that is a great use case! My understanding is the XH-A1 (nice camera by the way) outputs 1080i @ 60fps from component. I performed many additional tests on this converter that didn't make the video (would have been far too long...) beyond the xbox360 1080i component to 1080p HDMI conversion at 05:32 and all worked flawlessly. I haven't heard anything about the XH-A1 component output being out of spec, so the Sunnatch converter should do the job, giving you 1080p/60 HDMI for your Atem.

@askdrtk
@askdrtk Год назад
Great ot hear! In most cases, those are the optimal settings. As long as the monitor / television supports 1080p (as almost all do today) that is the way to go. Some users have 720p televisions (crt or flat panel) that will downscale a 1080p signal to 720p for display. In that case, 720p is the best setting to avoid lag from the display's internal downscaling.

what about the nes and the atari 7800?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Год назад
It depends whether your nes or 7800 are composite modded. If you have composite mods for the nes / 7800 I would recommend the Mcbazel ODV. It supports 240p output from both consoles very well (good color and detail) and it also support component input for even higher picture quality on other consoles. Another option is the Retrotink 2X Pro, but in my testing their is no visible difference between the two and the Mcbazel is less expensive. If your consoles are not composite modded and you are using RF output on the nes / 7800, you will need an RF demodulator also called an RF to AV converter to convert the output to composite video and analog audio (you can also use an older VCR to do this). You would then connect the composite video and audio to the Mcbazel ODV in order to connect via HDMI to your TV or monitor. I hope this helps out!
