Bryan reacts to and talks about his thoughts on Architects - "Gone With The Wind" ORIGINAL VIDEO: • Architects - "Gone Wit... Patreon: www.patreon.com/criticalreactions Twitter: critreactions
On a lyrical level this song is about the struggles of Tom Searle (their then lead guitarist, main song and lyrics writer) with cancer which he had been diagnosed with. Actually the entire album (All our gods have abandoned us) is about that, his view on the world and coming to term with his own mortality. He eventually passed away from the cancer on the touring cycle for this album.
I saw the comments saying they were a fun band and then I saw the song title and thought "fuck, there's nothing fun about this song, it hits the feels so hard every time"
This album was Tom's swan song. He did write Doomsday but this was the last Architect's album he wrote, being the main creative force behind the band. Holy Hell was both therapy and a challenge to do Tom justice. I love the acoustic tracks they've released and hope they return to the studio one day.
@@MostlyJoshin I did hear that Doomsday was a kind of mash up of some of Tom's "left over" riffs, but I'm pretty sure Dan (dummer/Tom's twin brother) wrote the lyrics to it. Could be wrong, but I dove deep when I was really getting into them, and am pretty sure that's what I read.
The “synths” are all guitar with effects on them. Tom was such a great ear when it came to ambience. The only exception could be the bridge when it was on the singer sam.
Yea, definetly, but the live version of gone with the wind played in alexandria palace is the most emotional and Id say even more powerful than memento mori.
Excellent choice in bands Bryan! Architects is a phenomenal band that are really one of the top metalcore acts currently in existence. If you want another great sampling of these guys, check out "Doomsday" - a single that was released by the band after one of the founding members (and brother to the lead singer) tragically passed away due to cancer. A VERY somber but worthwhile listen.
Seriously Brian, you have the best “reaction” channel on RU-vid. Love your analyses, which other channels lack. Just watching other react to a song gets tiring, so it is really refreshing when you analyse the everything about the song. It helps me appreciate music more, as I don’t have s musical background. Keep up the excellent work. Emil, Denmark.
Man this song always gets me in my feels! I've listened to these guys since their first EP they put out. Their guitarist Tom Searle passed away from Cancer in 2016 and alot of these songs he wrote about his time left to live coming to an end which is super sad but gives you way more respect for them. Their progression over the years is super impressive and amazing as well and they'll always be my favorite band. Anyway thanks for this reaction brotha and keep up the great work! I'll be waiting for your next reaction to them.
This song always brings out an inner sadness when I listen to it. Between the relatable anger and aggressiveness in the the vocals that equal the deep lyrics it just always hits for me.
For me Architects feels like one of the more approchable Bands in this Genre, mainly due to the "predictability" or simple structure of their songs. I feel they focus more on the lyrics and less on the structure of the song, while keeping it still interesting with nice guitar work and some technical elements like the syncopation. For example in my hometown there is a monthly metal party at a club and one of the bands, thats played the most is Architects next to a bunch of other metalcore bands and it works, while something more complex would bring you out of the flow. Btw: You swapped the pronounciation of the 'a' and 'ä' my name, since it' german, but i won't complain ;P And another song i'd like to see you react to would be The Lesson by Victor Wooten (EMG tv Session), if you haven't seen it. It's a bass solo masterpiece :D
Architects has been an amazing emotional journey to behold. Amazing in their musical prowess, and awe-inspiring in their visceral emotional output. Rage can be found within A Match Made in Heaven, and These Colours Don't Run. A literal Swan song can be found in Tom Searle's last song, Memento Mori. And Sorrow can be found within Doomsday and Hereafter. Both lie within Modern Misery.
Those synth are guitar effects. Their late guitarist was incredibly underrated. He wrote the lyrics to the record too. RIP Tom Searle. Metalcore will miss his work dearly. Also, they play to that ambient backtrack, that's their metronome.
I would suggest checking out Sylosis if you haven't already. The vocalist/lead guitarist Josh Middleton was the replacement for the guitarist of this band when he died from his cancer. Sylosis is WAY more straightforward metal but OH MY GOD is it fantastic.
A lot of people would consider Architects metalcore, not djent. There's a bunch of bands in the metalcore subgenre that are influenced by djent but still keep some elements of metalcore like the song structure you mentioned but have djent-esque riffs. Polaris is another one of these bands that's phenomenal and you should check them out.
But different songwriting and playing techniques is part of what makes something a subgenre, especially in metal where there can be little things that separate subgenres. Like that's why there's a big group of bands called djent bands, because its a group of bands that have a different style than other bands.
Appreciate the reaction Bryan! For a more intricate song from them I would recommend Memento Mori, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YumhzVvq63w.html this lyric video was pretty well done.
Thanks a lot for checking it out! I have found a song recently that I want to recommend, I really want to know what you'll think about it Destrage - Destroy Create Transform Subliminate Thanks a lot and keep doing what you're doing!
Looks like a lot of people are recommending Archspire, but I also definitely recommend Arch Enemy. Because everyone can use more metal in their lives with female vocalists. Now that I'm thinking about metal bands with female leads, you could also do Unleash the ARCHers. Arch Enemy is going to have a female vocalist with straight heavy (but impressive) vocals, while Unleash the Archers has a female lead who just sings. And man can she. The live version of "Awakening" is really great for Unleash the Archers.
Those "synth" are all done by Tom on guitar. they play to the ambient guitar track to keep time. Tom was a genius. You really should do a deep dive on his story. I suggest the Doomsday Doc they did
The lyrics, man. "A sickness with no remedy, 'cept the ones inside of me". White blood cells fighting cancer. You've gotta respect that level of writing.
