Remember really enjoying these guys back in the day, and this was actually one of their radio hits. Always thought they had a really cool mix of genres: broadly alternative rock, but with influences from electronica and industrial all done with an ear for pop hooks that helped them achieve mainstream popularity. Of course, back in the day I didn't know about the genre mixtures and just appreciated their vibe and the hooks. Listening to them all these years later I can appreciate it even more. I ought to give their discography a proper run through as I haven't listened to them since my teens.

Push It is one of their weaker songs - It was the opening single for Version 2.0 and a massive change from the more rocky first album even though that ended with the slow-paced "Milk" which was the also the preceding single. I'd say that Push It is also probably the weakest song on Version 2.0 but it was a good choice as an opening single in that era. The next two albums - "Beautiful Garbage" and "Bleed Like Me" are both phenomenal. I'd heavily suggest checking out the songs... - Silence is Golden - Cherry Lips {Go Baby Go} - Nobody Loves You - It's All Over But the Crying

I've always taken the lyrics as an inner monologue, trying to motivate herself. It fits with other lyrics she's written thematically. The push it part can be taken several ways, she's actually out running, pushing so hard it hurts just to hide the other pain and turmoil. Or, it could be when she feels she's slipping and is fighting to maintain control of herself. Sorry about the rambling nature of this post lol. This is purely based on my own interpretation, I haven't heard Sherley explain anything about it in interviews.

They had me at that first smeary homage to the Beach Boys "Don't Worry Baby." God, that was gloriously creepy and disturbing.

After all these years, you're the first person that I know of that's mentioned that. Thank you! I thought I was the only one.

PUSH it means! no matter what happens just keep PUSHING! in your own analysis the chorus should reffer to the relationship being PUSH even after everything about it has gone south!

Butch Vigg is an amazing producer.

I've loved Garbage since the first time I heard them due to their interesting and varied songwriting, great production and the vocals of the "rock goddess" (IMO), Shirley Manson (if you hear her Scottish brogue, you will be convinced!). The drummer, Butch Vig, produced all their albums and he's also produced many albums by other artists, including Nirvana's multi-million selling classic album Nevermind.

This album is absolutely phenomenal with great bass playing throughout, Shirleys melodies and lyrics are awesome, and the guitarists are really creative. They do use keyboards but a lot of what's going on is the two guitarists. If you didn't know, Butch Vig who produced Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana is their drummer and the album is self-produced hence the great percussive nature of their music. It's loaded with hits and the production is immaculate. The Trick is to Keep Breathing is one of the sexiest and most chill songs I've ever heard.

The Trick is to Keep Breathing has helped me get through many moments. It's probably my favorite song on the album.

Evening of memories ! I saw them in a festival in 2005, and I loved their mix between the vocals, the bass, and the keyboards. Above all, Garbage was a complete happiness because one of the rare band with a front woman

Is a backfront woman what Led Zeppelin was singing about with "I wanna be your backdoor man?" :P

I haven't done any Prodigy and have practically zero experience with them on my own. If it's anything like this then I'd love to see what they're about.

Thanks for the review. The founder of Garbage is Butch Vig who is famous for producing Nirvana's Nevermind and The Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream. I like their first four albums, although the third and the fourth are not quite as good as their debut and the second one where this song comes from. Garbage are still active and releasing albums, but I'm not really a fan of the music they are making today. - Bratislav

Garbage are still active and releasing albums, but I'm not really a fan of the music they are making today. I found Not Your Kind of People and Strange Little Birds felt more than a bit "we have to put out an album" and phoned in. I haven't heard the latest album yet.

This put me a real 90s frame of mind. Would love see your take on this: niche 90's alt/grunge band from Belgium. No idea how popular they were outside my circle at the time, but I reckon they're the best band to come out of Belgium. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-31JQiJwOXeY.html

Not their best song although it was a strong choice as an opening single back in 1998 {It went to #9 on the UK Charts and was one of Garbage's five biggest hits along with Stupid Girl, Milk, When I Grow Up and The World is Not Enough} You also have to remember that The Matrix wouldn't come out for another year at that point. Personally I would have preferred "When I Grow Up" or "You Look So Fine" as the opening singles to this album as I feel Push It and I Think I'm Paranoid were both a bit too manufactured and not really representative of Garbage's overall work. Along with the aforementioned "You Look So Fine" and "When I'd Grow Up" I'd recommend listening/reacting to.... - Silence is Golden - Cherry Lips {Go Baby Go} - Nobody Loves You and - It's All Over But the Crying
