Man that tape saturation & wobble are so gorgeous. You keep proving the value of paying attention to detail, and I think you're inspiring people to think beyond just stringing some volcas together and calling it a day. Even modular is just one of your many tools. Pure gold here.

Lovely work dude. You do a good job of incorporating your tape-loop style into the composition so its not simply noise or atmosphere, but something that fits perfectly and creates mood and tension.
@Mimetikmusic

This sounds beautiful! In particular the low ends: the SE-02 sounds great. Apart from the nice break down of the whole process, I really appreciate your comment on recording in one take: I usually record in Live, but nevertheless I force myself as much as possible to only record what I play in one take, and add some really minor finish later. As you say, it raises the stakes, and so it creates this tension where everything could brake up, or at least go into unexpected direction. You can clearly hear this tension in your music: it is something that to me inspires acceptance, rather than perfection. Pure bliss.
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 6 лет назад
Exactly: accept the imperfect, concentrate on the beautiful and the joy of creation.

Switching to hardware helped me a lot in progressing as a musician. Made me step out of my comfort zone and commit 100% to what I make. Much easier to get into a flow state when I don't have the ability to indulge my perfectionism and hit undo every 10 seconds. Software is objectively better in most ways but hardware can be very useful, especially when it comes to experimentation and creativity. Personally can't get anything done on a DAW.

Great story and lovely process. Thank you for sharing this! I love how the affordable stuff usually has the most character. It's not necessarily the nicest character, but a character nonetheless. Except for the OP-1. It's just awesome.

You got great inspirational sources. I am a movie geek and I follow you especially on the goblin soundtrack. Your soundtrack is a kind of its own. Really great. As a lover of Italian movies from 60th and 70th, I did an adaption of Stelvios main theme of Cani Arrabiati recently and now struggle with mixing it ;) It is meant as a homage to U-He and so I only used their Hive2 for all sound source. A little bit limiting but that was the goal. I also will use some lofi tape effects (plugins) in the mix for it. Your channel is a great source of going on experimentating for me. Have joy and be sound.

Fantastic video, and I love your concept for the album. I have to say, your videos really have inspired me to work on some stuff. I bought my own Variable Speed Record-capable tape player the other day, a Panasonic RR-830, when I couldn't seem to outbid others for a few different C1s that have come up on eBay. I haven't tried it yet, but when I do, I'll let you know how it goes.
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 6 лет назад

@phogue1
@phogue1 6 лет назад
@@Hainbach Had a chance to play with the recorder. I only tried the internal mic, but it recorded well. The VSC feature is different than the speed control on the C1, as it's primary speed feature only slows it to 85%. There is a second tab that you can use to play back much slower, but I noticed that sharper sounds caused a weird stuttering effect when played back that way. I don't know if that's particular to "VSC," or if any tape recording slowed down might have that issue. For example, when I recorded a glockenspiel, the stutter was very apparent, but when I recorded a simulated Rhodes, it wasn't. There's no reverse feature, either. By the way, there's a new video from Earthquaker Devices in the "Show Me Your Junk" series with Lee Renaldo. Apparently the C1 was part of Sonic Youth's gear for many years.

4:41 "flow state" is such an interesting concept, and lately I've been chasing that flow state and actually find that I react the opposite under pressure and start screwing up. Do you have any tips/exercises that get you into that state? I acheived it last week and haven't gotten there since.
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 6 лет назад
That is a course onto itself. First you must know what you want. Second you must be a master of your instruments or be able to throw believable distractions. Third if you fail, fail gracefully. Fourth it's not an error if you do it twice. Five is listen. There is so much more but I would need to conceptualise a class on this.

The wires aren't recording anything. They're just in-between the strings of the piano to change its sound to ones that usually wouldn't be proper piano tuning. It's referred to as "prepared piano," and its been used by composers like John Cage, Henry Cowell, Aphex Twin.. and Hainbach.
