I have composite decking and have had it now for 15 years and it still looks brand new. All I do is sweep or hose it off and good as new. It's called deck trex. No fading or scratching or warping etc like my old wooden deck did

That's great you've had a good experience. There are many people that have not and many that are very happy with their composite.

Google composite decking problems and reviews, also search "brand name decking reviews". You'll find plenty of complaints from home owners. If there was one that we felt was reliable enough for our customers then we would stock it but we have not found one yet that has proven to hold up.

@@AdvantageLumber agreed. Home inspector here. 25 years in the business. Composite is also slippery even when not wet. Cedar, redwood and several other woods are naturally decay resistant. My biggest issue is mold concerns for my house in this region (southeast). I find the newer preservatives in pressure treated wood are not very effective in deterring mold growth. As far as this video being biased, of course it is. they're a business and they are advertising the benefits of their product. However, in this case I happen to personally agree with the claims that are stated. And they obviously believe in their product. Do your own resoich as well while considering the points in this video. I was set on using pressure-treated wood but recently the pressure treated wood I've left outside in a covered screened in porch has grown mold like crazy. To the point where after just one week outside, I decided to return it to Home Depot because of the growth that I saw on it in that short a period of time. I also know quite a bit about mold and fungi etc. Oh and to the manufacturer, brilliant decision to use a narrator with such a calming relaxed voice. Very effective :-)

@@coppulor6500 I live in South Florida. I have a Cedar deck on the back of my house that is 23 years old and its still in pretty decent shape with only one board rotted out. But every 2 years I clean and reseal the deck with the Bear sealer which is about $30 to $35 a gallon. Its supposed to last at least 3 years, but here 2 years and it done. I am going to redo my deck, I am looking at Composite or hard woods as an alternative to pressure treated soft wood because it requires so much maintenance. Composites look better than Cedar at first, but you need to find someone who knows how to install it correctly, it fades, its hard to replace, it scratches and in has no structural strength which I need for the storms here. Im thinking hard woods are a better option myself for a wide variety of reasons. They are also a bit cheaper than composites it seems and far far easier for the average contractor to work with.
@ryanscott6600
@ryanscott6600 3 года назад
How does this sound biased? Have you ever installed? I sell Trex and TimberTech mainly, and this is a good comparison video especially after customer asks what's the difference between Cedar and Trex. To be able to explain with all these details is invaluable and provide you with knowledge the shows the customer will trust in your knowledge. That you are trying to sell trex for a mark up, it's not always better in the long term for you to keep them as a customer or have them spread your name.

@@ryanscott6600 nothing about the benefits of composite was exposition l explained. This reads as composite is trash, soft wood is ok, but this new stuff in South America is fuego. It wasn't a compassion, it was an advertisement

The major composit decking brands usually carry 30 year warrantys agaist fading and delamination.

@@AdvantageLumber And there are other companies who absolutely have. No reason to treat every single company and every single composite product as being the same. Some composite products are literally warrantied for being installed submerged under water.

Seems like a really hard sell to pay 3 times more for an inferior product. Plus, when a wood deck finally does need replacement, the wood will decompose eventually, these composite decks are straight to the dump.
@stever6773
@stever6773 3 года назад
Thank you for pointing out some of the flaws of composite decking. Fading is definitely a real issue as I have seen this first hand. I am going with wood on my new deck as I want the flexibility to stain/finish it the way I want to match my color scheme. Maintenance is a plus portrayed by composite deck manufacturers but for me I like the idea that after 5 years I can make a natural wood deck look brand new again. A composite deck that has faded likely will not be restorable without replacing the entire deck. Not saying a composite deck isn't right for you, just don't let someone sell you that it is zero maintenance, will look the same after 20 years and last forever as you may be disappointed if those are your expectations.

What do you think of black locust?
@AdvantageLumber

It usually gets compared to Ipe, however Ipe has over twice the janka hardness of black locust. The harder the wood the longer it lasts and the least likely you are to have wood boring insects.
