Richard shoots on location at Lanercost Priory in Cumbria, guiding you through the process of shooting on 5x4 film, from visualization and composition through to capturing the final image.
In this film we follow Richard as he tackles the difficult English weather to capture moody and evocative images around Cumbria’s Lanercost Priory. Richards initially starts undercover in the vaults surrounding the priory utilising the Fuji XE-1 to demonstrate how he looks for and composes the final image. He then shoots the image and explains the different considerations required when shooting Negative film rather than digital. Richard then moves into the central ruins where he covers how tonal range and colour can affect the choice as to whether an image should be black & white or colour.
Equipment - Ebony Ti 5x4 format , Fuji XE-1

This video show how dedicated you have to be so you can become a master in this art, every process is meticulously checked just like a pilot checking his airplane for flight, not just snapping everything on sight

Richard...... Thank you so much for this series of video's. Its been really interesting to see a 4x5 photographer going through the thought process of making a frame and taking the shot. I'm really happy you shared the resiporocity and light meter EV information on your previous video too. Aslo seeing it all at work and coming together in this video is real icing on the cake :-) I now know i'm not being overly slow and unthoughtful to others when I have my 4x5 out :-) Thank you thank you thank you. I really hope to be seeing more videos from you soon.

loved this. slowing down and finding the shot and talking through the process, rather than machine gunning and hoping. inspired me to get out on this gloomy day. thankyou

Its a real pleasure to watch this video! So much to learn here! I especially like the slow down fact, taking time to find the right composition etc! Thank you very much for this lesson!

I have never used a 5x4 camera before, so this was something new to me. I used to shoot with 35 mm black and white film [ which I loved] I then moved on to digital bridge cameras - which I use specifically for black and white shots.

That is so very interesting about long exposures. Thank you for showing the chart. I have 5new rolls of 120 Tri-X and will try some very long exposures. A ND filter is on the way to me which requires 6 stops of light. That should be fun. Please make more videos.

I had to chuckle. In the amount of time that you had available to _work your subject_ (as my dad would say), my personal experience is usually this: kids running around, couples texting but choosing to stand in your way, idiots talking on their phone and again standing in the way / walking randomly around trying to get a better signal, and then... a bus load of Japanese tourists!

I like how you utilize both formats in your process. I hope to soon get my hands on a 4x5 monorail to use for landscapes. Great video. Can you further explain reciprocity failure? Never had a problem with it when I shot 35mm. Now that I shoot medium format I am hearing more about it.

5x4 is the best of the best it has body.

Hi Richard, don't you find that your negs occasionally get ruined by airport x-ray? I have certainly found that with my 35mm stuff.

Vault or Vaults? Perhaps crypt since it is below the church.
