I do the even lazier man's method. I have less, way less holes, in my tote. I fill the tote all summer and top it off in August and again in November and then I don't touch it until May or June. I have the totes in a spot that gets winter sun. I might water them once or twice if I remember. Super lazy, takes forever, but the cycle works for me.
I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can before starting and felt very intimidated/overwhelmed by literally every video so far, till yours. This is the MOST comprehensive guide! I will be starting mine tomorrow :) Thank you so much for this! 🙏🏼
I read through so many guides and watched so many videos on how to DIY a compost bin from a tote, and your video does the absolute best job of explaining WHY each step is important and HOW to do it correctly. Thank you for being such a great instructor! I feel a lot more confident in starting my DIY composter.
PRO TIP: Put a few small rocks at the front of the bin so there's a gap about a mm so worms that travel on the top of the earth, will find cover and then start working their way up for you. Reason I say this is, we all know what happens to planter bottoms when you lift them up or move them... This hide out spot where they will gravitate to, will make it easier for them to find the holes in your planter! -cheers
I’m so glad that I found this because building a compost bin does not seem easy. I’ve purchased my bins, added the holes to one of them and started adding my nitrogens and carbons. I am excited to see it develop. Thank you!
I am sooooo glad that I not purchased a compost bin/tumbler/etc. I was even considering that Bokashi method. But I don't have the ground or extra raised bed to trench it. I can do this! Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!
Professional tip homie…..over in Idaho, there is potato farmers that farms that are literally miles wide and miles long. REST ASSURED they do NOT dog out their entire garden and replace the dirt every year. That’s damn ridiculous!!!
I love how simply you break this down. I also was overwhelmed and intimidated to try composting after watching several other videos. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Wish i had seen this video years ago. I bought a tumbler. It does work but most of the good nutrients drain out of it way too quickly when it's time to keep it moist. So i have a bucket under to collect the compost tea. I save it and add it to the areas I'm going to plant in over fall and winter even over the snow to help get that area nutrients to soak in the existing ground. Also i don't get as much compost as i need. I have these same totes so this is a game changer for me 5 years later😊 late is better than never so thank you so much!!
Unless the containers are air tight you may not even need to drill holes if you're giving it a stir every week or so and managing moisture inside with what you're adding. Currently have a tall trash can I'm composting in, but I really like the use of the wide bins in the video for ease of access.
This is not a lazy method it is a smart method. I just got back from buying a smaller storage container to start a compost bin on my balcony. I tuned into your video while I took a break. I couldn’t imagine trying to turn soil in a bucket without getting frustrated. Thank you for explaining how to prepare the storage bin, and about using natural ashes in the compost. I was sure going to use some of that charcoal you said not to use. I’m glad I watched your video before I added that stuff. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
