The composting information was useful. But here's something I'd like to add - I found the video touching because it also exuded love, gentleness, earnestness, and kindness. Sometimes I feel more than the right mix of soil or the right amount of some or the other ingredients, the grower learns about what's working with their plants quickly if they have these values. I myself started growing plants after my mum left behind a happy rose plant in my house and I didn't have the heart to see it perish. I didn't do anything right in trying to give it care. But it still survived. And I still don't get anything right but my plants survive cos they 'see' me trying.
to anyone reading watching this video: this method works. I started my compost bin 3 months ago, followed the instructions to a T, and yesterday I distributed the compost I made to my plants. thank you aparna for this video! I've tried to compost for many years and never really had much success until now.
@@sellyrosemarie i didn't use one since i kept my bucket outdoors. but water does drain out of those holes in the bottom! so i'd recommend a tray if you're composting indoors
@@grubnomics possibly means your compost is too wet - maybe add more brown waste? and frequently check if the drain holes are clogged. i had maggots in my compost too and i just let them be. it's rotting organic matter; this is supposed to happen. adding a good layer of dried leaves on top kept maggots to a minimum though.
This was my first attempt to make compost and woah what a great experience it was I got sweet smelling compost .to all the beginners out there just have patience and follow this method.
I enjoyed the video, thank you. I've been composting in 5 gallon plastic buckets for about 2 years with no covers and only 1 or 2 holes in the bottom for drainage. Sometimes it gets too wet from hose or rain, in the hot weather it often dries out for a long time, sometimes it seems like a swamp or mucky because I usually put in too many greens (kitchen scraps) and I hardly ever mix it but you know what- it still breaks down into compost no matter what you do so don't get all hung up if you're confused and have questions. Just do it. Even with "mistakes", the end result is compost. In my case I have a pepper plant and a tomato plant that came up from the scraps and have survived into the 2nd season bearing food and also 2 avocado seeds sprouted and are now 6 feet high still living without any help from me except for water.
I don't purposely get big buckets for composting. Rather, i just used whatever plastic tubs that are not so suitable to reuse for other storage. Whenever i have kitchen waste, i just opened whichever that is not full and throw the kitchen scraps in, closed the tub and keep the tubs under my kitchen sink. The scraps will rot and if they have too much compost tea in them, i will bring them out to the garden to pour to the plants that are hungry for their food. Whenever i started a new plant or re-pot, i will bring out any of the tubs that are almost filled up and turning brownish and throw them into the pot after layering the bottom. If you have tubs where you used only lemon peels, they will smell fresh and nice but if mixed with other scraps, sometimes they smelled fartish 😂😂 (nitrate smell). So far, whatever plant that i add them to, the plants survive well although i am probably one of the laziest gardener ever. I don't even bother watering much 😅
A week ago (or so), I started posting a comment on this video about how you inspired me and how I was FINALLY going to start composting. I never posted it. Today though, I am going to post because this past weekend; guess what?! I DID IT! I started my first compost bucket. It was just as easy as you have detailed here and way, way, WAAAAY more fun than I ever imagined! I was like a kid in a candy shop the entire time. A special note though. What felt best was 1) not feeling guilty about how I manage my waste, and 2) the notion of turning plants into deeper forms of energy and allowing them to live on in other perpetual forms of being as they are naturally designed! I am so glad to have met you as you are such a warm soul and pleasant spirit of a Human.
Thank you balcony composter, you have encouraged me so much after feeling like a compost failure. i have been so upset about the ants wanting to kill my wrigglers in my tumbler.
I love this video, the creator makes so many points ... not to mention all the potting soil we buy in America comes from Canada and effectively we are damaging their peat bogs for our garden soil. This is so great
Well the companies who sell the soil are damaging the peat bogs not the consumer actually. I don't think most consumers even know where there soil comes from.
Thank you for showing how to compost in a small area. For those who want to know the negative to Peat & also Coco Coir, Gardner Scott has this info, it's Shocking! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MvYZdxVipAo.html
@@leahv.2537 And what soil are we talking about? Most garden stores usually sell the two biggest brands that are owned by the same company. Most home gardeners don't really take it much further than that.
Thank you for showing those without gardening room (apt/balcony) an easy way to compost in buckets! Adding Neem leaves to compost greatly reduces bugs!!
This video single handedly convinced me to begin making my own compost. I live in a small apartment with limited patio space. I really like how you answered common questions at the end. I will definitely be trying this method! I however live on ground level near some woods. Will probably need to put something heavy on top to keep racoons out! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Great video!! I'm thinking of starting composting for the first time but I dont have brown leaves or straw. What should I make the base layer? Can I use potting soil or newspaper?
Yes I'm interested in trying it now too, now that apparently there is a way that even in little apartments we can do this. It just might take a little while to figure out spacing since I already have stuff on my porch.
I suppose I missed this video. But I also compost in these 5 gal. buckets. It just makes so much sense to turn food & yard waste into something so incredible.
I cannot tell you how motivating your video is to me right now I am thinking about starting a garden in my backyard next spring and I am petrified I don't know where to start and everybody is talking about composting composting I'm like okay I don't want to spend a lot of money on compost I came across your video and I am like wait all of these things just turn back to dirt I am amazed Thank you for your video!
I made mine Apr 3, it’s doing very well. I started out small with a 2gal container. poked out holes with a cutter at the bottom for drainage and smaller holes at 1/4 the lower sides of the bin for aeration. But I ended up adding holes throughout the body and even the lid later on. Spent a stinky first week trying to perfectly balance it out. Though not so much to stink our place, only when I open the bin to turn it, and it attracted fruit flies that idk where they came from nor how’d they get in the bin. My takeaways were: * More variety of materials, the better (cut up to smaller pieces). I initially only had cut-up cardboards and papers as brown material so maybe that’s why even with the 2:1 eyeballed ratio it still stank. The odor was completely gone when I added some used soilless potting mix, leaving me with sweet earthy scent everytime I open the bin to turn it. * More aeration holes, the faster the breakdown according to my not very comprehensive research and cause I did it and it did work out. * Probably helped, I leave my bin in the most sunny place (My balcony is roofed facing north-west). Weather often around 34°C. Even when I added more waste later on, I make sure I top it off with old soil (cause I really have no source of dried leaves), it still has sweet earthy scent and the flies also left. Though it did hatch some larvae, I saw two that fell out of the bin when I turned it, but maybe the rest died out later cause I never saw larvae again. And maybe it’s the location of my bin (idk) but there are no ants either. Apr 26. I neglected turning the bin for a week cause I was sick (I used to turn it almost everyday cause I liked the sweet earthy scent even if I dislike the visual of it). There’s some unknown tall, white mushrooms with pointy, feathery cap and another smaller white mushrooms that look like qtips growing.... Are they poisonous or not? idk, I can’t find them on google but I went and turned the bin, it kinda dried but still has the sweet earthy scent, no insects, and most greens are already broken down I can’t recognise much except for the ones I added later on and the egg shells. The cardboards though are still pretty much intact, I should remember to cut it up smaller next time. The volume of contents reduced to about 2/3. I really shouldn’t have used so much cardboard maybe then I could use the compost sooner.
I’ve watched several videos on composting but have still been hesitant to try it. You explained it so well!! I had not understood before what foods can and cannot be composted!! Thank you 😊
Since we have longer winter months in the Northeast US, I started rejuvenating my soil from last year with compost, egg shells, baked banana peals and kitchen scrap.
Thank You Very Much for such a lovely invitation to get started composting. I also had been hesitating to try. But your clear instructions and assurance that bugs and smell are not something that need be a problem, helped me decide that I can start composting now.😀 Bright spirits to you and all✨
I started Kitchen waste composting almost two months back and it's such a rewarding and magnificent experience that it is beyond words. You have expressed those feelings very beautifully in last two minutes. Composting made me so passionate that my colleagues feel startled that i even take fruit peelings of my colleagues for composting. Well, they are quite supportive too and have been demanding Kitchen waste compost for their home garden too.
I am doing the bokashi method... But unfortunately finished bokashi is not composted soil, it's a bunch of fermented, bad smelling and wet chunks 😂 So you need to mix the bokashi with soil in order to fully break it down afterwards... which is not ideal for a balcony gardener 🙈 So I think I'll try something similar to what you showed here and mix my bokashi with soil & browns 😊 (the bokashi "tea" is an amazing fertilizer btw)
I keep a very large Tupperware container of soil to mix the bokashi into so it can “cure.” That being said. If I’m potting up a new planter. I just slop a layer of bokashi on the bottom. It’ll breakdown no problem. By the time the root system reaches it, it’s pretty decomposed.
The best video for bucket composting or Kitchen waste composting. Loved the way of guilding and making it so simple. I watched more than 2 dozen of videos over that topic but found it the best. Great Effort and help.
THANK you! I live in a house in Mexico, but many of the houses in our city do not have yard space at all - everything is tiled so it's easy to keep clean. I do, however, have a place to park a car (but don't own one), patio space, and a service porch. I didn't think I had any room to compost, but using the method you use, I have all kinds of room! I really appreciate the time you took to put this video together. I'm off to find some buckets. :D
Yes, you did motivate me to start composting on a small scale. I may increase the amounts later, but using a trash can or a pile on the ground is hard work for me at age 68. Thank you very much!
I'm 73 and appreciate your comment ! Could you find a way to elevate the compost bucket or get comfortable at a lower level , maybe by using a plastic stool to sit on ! All the very best !😊😊
Hey! This video was posted 8 months ago, and I was wondering if you have any updates or things you do differently now. You can tell I am still hesitant to start, even though I have already started to collect eggshells and coffee grounds :D From everything I watched online, I clicked with your video the most. From the delivery of the information to breaking down the suggestions. Thanks!
Wow! I learned a lot today. I love to compost because I hate my kitchen garbage to go to waste, And I can also save money from buying fertilizer. New subscriber here!
Thank you so much for this detailed explanation on compost preparation. May God fortify your effort further. I have learned a lot. I have to start my own compost in my farm immediately as I have all needed in the farm but never knew how to do it.
Wow thank you for sharing this...I always thought composting needs a large space and that would be a problem to me, no space . I am so happy, by tomorrow I am so excited to start my organic fertilizer in a bin/pail . Thanks again by the way, I like your garden...your style....cleaned and well organized . Amazing 🥰
I've been doing something similar for the last 10 years in Bengaluru. I'm so happy that i haven't handed out organic waste to bbmp in this period. You are doing a great job.
Great video! I've composted many times but I'm about to start a composter on a balcony for the first time so thank you for the tips! For those wondering about compost smelling bad...if your compost is getting smelly, it's probably because it's too wet with too many greens. If it's a plastic container like a bucket, make sure it has enough holes on the bottom and sides, add some more browns and mix it up! You should be good to go 🙂
I totally loved this video! So well explained and completely demystifies the process of composting, something ive been wanting to attempt for years now!
You are great lady. I have just begun gardening, living on the ground floor of an apartment. I will certainly begin this method. Love your sincerity in touching all pros and cons and how to avoid unwanted pest issues. I'll follow your clips and have subscribed to your channel.
i've watched so many composting videos. some of them would put one off trying it. i'm so glad i found this video today, lady you are brilliant, thank you so much for this video. i'm going out right now to begin coposting. thank you and God Bless from Ireland. ☘
If in a really small space like a deck, you can look into Bakashi bran composting, which breaks down food scraps by fermentation aerobically (without air), so it can be done quickly, in a sealed bucket or ceramic container, with little to no odor (smells vinegar-like inside). It is also a bit less messy and a bit faster (works in like 2 months).
Wonderful video at the right time. You answered all my questions. Your presentation of the material was state of the art. Very pleasant. Keep up the good work.
Love your video on bucket composting. This is probably the best, most informative, well explained account I have seen.I do bucket compost, but mine comes out rather smelly, clingy and crumbly. However I do use it,but I tend to put it under my garden soil and plant over it for best results. This method seems to work for me.Thanks for your tips. ❤
This has been a most outrageously informative video! Just whoa! You kept me interested and entertained, the editing was fantastic, and everything you shared was completely useful, thank you so very much for putting your time into it!
useful for many who are not aware of this, but my i learnt this from my mother many many years back when i was a school going girl and now i practice as well, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! You're content is amazing, I can relate so much, I have a balcony garden(7ft by 4ft), and a small ground space(7ft by 3ft). I've made compost 3 times on the ground in a wire fence. I always wondered if I could make compost in a 5 gall bucket, but I figured not because most people on youtube say it needs 3ft x 3ft. I'm so glad I stumbled across your video, This will help me alot! Now I have even more space to make compost 😃👍
As far as I understand from what I've read & watched: the 3ft x 3ft minimum is to maintain a hot compost (which decomposes faster). Smaller amounts like this one (or some piles that aren't maintained as much), are cold compost, and just take longer to break down.
Thank you so much. I’ve been looking all over RU-vid for a simple method that I know I can do and this is the first one I’ve come across ❤ I can’t wait to try it out. From waste to flowers or food, love this so much.
Great video on composting! 🌿♻ Easy to follow and super helpful for beginners like me. Loved the practical tips and clear visuals. Excited to start composting and make a positive impact.
❤😊 I Love The Way You presented this video and the love for the environment, thank you so much it was very informative and for promoting home gardening.
Thank you so much for this video! You answered all my questions, but one is still open: Can I continuously throw my kitchen scraps in there? Or does it need some sort of "resting period"? It looks like you start the bucket once and let it rest until it is composted :) Would be amazing if anyone could give me some insights here!
I have similar question. Like if compost needs 2-5 months, I can imagine a family needs like at least 10 buckets for all the food scraps on the balcony, since it takes so much time for them to become compost
I feel you should start with the next container once the first one is full. And depending on the amount if waste collected you may keep on adding more containers. After around two months the compost may be ready in first bucket.I do it in small pots, one pot gets filled up in around a week. This video surely is encouraging. Thanks dear
I always wanted to do this but had so many freaking questions that I never even dared to try. Thank you for putting out this video and I am seeing it after a year you posted. Better late than never 😊 I am going to do this tomorrow itself. Thank you so much for such a beautiful and simple video with all the necessary info.
I just came across this video and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate it! You really struck such a great balance between making it seem easy and approachable while still adding so much knowledge and information. This was just a pleasure to watch, you have such a nice vibe that it felt I was being led by the hand, but not spoken down to.
I was looking for exactly this! Running a balcony vegetable garden with more than 20 pots and I want to stop buying hundreds of liters of soil every year. Are the holes in the buckets necessary and can the buckets be left in the rain without a lid? Curious for you opinion on this :)
I use rice water for my hair too.. I store the left over water in which the rice is boiled in, let it cool down and rinse my hair with that. The same is used for the compost as well… 😉
I’m back with another question, maybe it’s already asked - sorry in that case. I noticed some mold on avocado peel in my compost. Would you remove pieces with mold? Thank you 😊
Hi! I loved your video and finally bought the materials to make it! I was curious if the drainage we receive from the compost bucket is considered "compost tea", and if so can we use it to fertilize plants?
I wanted to ask the same question. Does the water flow out and does that water smell? Is your bucket on a plate which collects any water seeping out? What about mosquitoes for those in tropical countries?
Thaks a lot for this motivational video. Iam a plant lover. Thought many times to start home composting but somehow couldn't start.but after this video i am confident that I can also start now.
Like your presentation on composting. We do composting at Adventure farm and nature reserve in Tobago in the Caribbean on this beautiful day .Ean. As you said you can said wane you start composting ands you see the benefits and there is no turning back. I am going in the garden now to get some compost for my pots. We use red wriggle worms as well. THANKS.
Thank you. I have watched many videos on this, So many I became discouraged. You explain everything so well and answered all of my questions. I now how the confidence to give it a try. So happy I found you!
