Installing a composting toilet in an RV is NOT as easy as I thought. A professional looking result can be difficult. I’ll show you how to vent the toilet through a roof vent and build a platform that's barely noticeable. It won't matter whether you're installing the Air Head or Nature’s Head.

I very much like that your How To videos show ALL steps despite how minimal they may be. For instance: Plug fitting, Unscrew nut, Put down drop cloth, clean excess sealant from inside connector. Having ALL of those little steps included make for a much easier and over successful job. And you still managed to keep it a

RV with Tito DIY I also appreciate all the steps, as I am a single female without a lot of experience with tools/building/plumbing/sawing/wiring. I have been wanting to do just this Reno but you left out all the electrical details-which is critical. I have no idea how to “tie in” to a light to get 12 volt power. This absolute lack of information seems deliberate, since you explained and showed everything else that I need to know so well. Are you just assuming that everyone knows how to do the electrical, because it is so simple, or is it just (understandably)covering your...Please give this information! Give warnings if you must, but please show more clearly how to do that part...explain the dangers as you see them, say what the wires are coming from and why you chose them - anything would be more helpful than nothing. If I could afford to hire someone to do the Reno, I wouldn’t be watching DIY shows...so any help understanding what exactly you are doing, and what precautions you have taken would be helpful. Just imagine how you would make sure your daughter didn’t electrocute herself, and explain exactly what you would instruct her to do if she had to do it without anyone’s help. There has GOT to be some way to minimize the risks for someone without electrical knowledge - like: “Take out all the fuses for the whole RV so no electricity is going anywhere while you wire the fan” (or does that just make everything have no fuses and is therefore a bigger danger?) Or “wear thick rubber gloves and running shoes when touching wires”... it would just be very helpful if you included that part. Everything else was so clear that I trust you would explain what I needed to know to get the job done without causing an electrical hazard....

Iv been working on RVs my entire adult life and even though I am well educated in all aspects of fixing building and customizing RVs, travel trailers, conversion van's, etc. Iv always enjoyed watching your videos. Not only is someone else doing the work, lol, but you are always so thorough in explaining your project and make sure that the camera always has a good view for your watcher's education. I've had gobs of people ask me why I haven't started a RU-vid channel myself. Well I don't believe that I have the time, patience, or equipment to edit and film so many tasks let alone I'm more of a emergency RV captain America Type and not many people are even close to clean and tidy in there RV and wouldn't make nearly as good of a showing as your presentations. Keep it up bud, always a pleasure to watch, and been a reliable go to resource that I can refer my customers to. You've been a real service to many! Ryan

I installed an airhead also, though in our previous two rigs, first a truck camper then a 5th wheel a few years ago. In the 5th wheel I installed it identical to your install except I sandwiched the vent fan between two of Airheads fan shrouds and placed it under the floor halfway between the vent pipe and where it exited the toilet, this served two purposes it placed the fan closer to the vent pipe and second, no fan noise, though admittedly hardly noticeable. I found venting to the black tank vent pipe to be the best solution as there is a bit of a smell exiting the vent on the roof, so no smell anywhere at ground level around the rig. With our truck camper I took the easiest approach which ended up venting out the back at ground level. Good Job!

Looks good Bryan. I know that wall isn't a load bearing wall but there is quite a chunk missing from that wall stud. Just to be sure no sagging develops during road travel I think I would put a thin piece of aluminum or angle iron strapping on the front of that stud to prevent any movement. Just my thoughts. You always do such a great job. If you could put two pieces in a X pattern that would be awesome.

Very clear how-to👍 Maybe in a future video you can show how you connected the gray and black tanks together. Make sure you get a spare urine container to rotate while waiting to dump the first one. I've had a Nature's Head for several years and would never go back! I used a polypropylene cutting board to cut a hole and mount the toilet - no worries about getting the base wet.

Finally, someone has it right.. It never ceases to amaze me when normal plumbing practices are thrown aside and the installer vents through the floor or side instead of through the roof.. ! They must like the smell of their toilet to include exchanging aromas with their neighbors.. God bless Fernco fittings..

Hey Brian, Nice to see you embracing the composting world. We have the "C" Head in operation for 3 + years now and love the freedom from the Black Tank. I have ours installed on a double layer of 3/4 plywood with a Pex line running Urine beneath the unit into the the Black Tank now. While working around the RV the other day, it suddenly dawned on me, I can throw out the Old Sewer hose as we only use a 3/4 garden hose now... WOW!

I did a similar install with my Natures Head. I also made a spacer to allow me to keep the original plumbing intact. I also was able to tie into my vent from the black tank. That part was easier for me than you on my 1986 Avion trailer. Thanks for another informative video.

Great install video Brian. I was hoping you were going to plumb the liquids to the black tank so I could learn what you did 😉. I kept the water line and plumbed in a shut off valve and then spray nozzle and then mounted the spray nozzle to the wall behind the toilet. It makes for a great attachment for occasional cleaning. Another informative video. I also watched the links on composting toilets. We put a natures head toilet in our boat 4 years ago and swap it to the travel trailer when we take trailer trips. We are usually in our trailer or boat for 6 to 8 months at a time. So we use the toilet for long periods of time. For us it is about 3 weeks on the solids part and 2 days on the liquids for emptying. Sure extends your anchor out time in a boat and your boondocking time in the trailer. Thanks agin Tito

I used Wago connectors wrapped up in electrical tape. The yellow wire nuts you saw were the ones I removed from the compartment light power wires. They're now in the trash.

Great video as always. The threads on that flange plug bolt and wingnut are proprietary to the manufacturer. I substituted the original hardware with a standard bolt and nut with washers. I still had to cut down the bolt and grind it flush with the nut as I could not find a bolt short enough to fit. We went with a C-Head toilet and this Spring I'll be mounting it in our unused wet bath using your video as a guide. Thank you.

@@geraldhenrickson7472 Sorry, I should have included a link to the Happy Bowl website. They are very thin paper "bowls" that you place in a standard RV/marine toilet, do your business, then flush the toilet. It takes almost zero water to get the "package" to cleanly drop into the black tank.

I have been watching your videos for a while. I like the DIY approach to your up grades. VERY informative. I would like to see an addition of how to servise this Air Head unit. How awkward the disassemly and reassembly is. We have a rather tight spot for the toilet in our MH. Thanks.

There's a video linked in the description that will cover all of the operation and servicing. It's very easy to disassemble. The Air Head also comes in two different shapes for tight spaces. I think there's a narrow shape too. This is mostly for marine applications that have a tiny head compartment or curved bulkhead.

Easiest was is to put a Valterra twist on gate valve on the end of the drain. Then just open both tanks.

Yeah. I know. You caught me cheating and using what I had on hand :) ABS cement would have been better. Everything was pretty snug without cement and there's no pressure pulling it apart. Hopefully it will be fine, but an easy redo if needed.

Big proponent of composting toilets here! But just a suggestion, instead of a wood platform riser/spacer under the toilet I used a large HDPE kitchen cutting board (plastic) and taped it down with VHB and mirror tape. It was hard to cut the center hole though - it tended to melt as I was cutting! Also I'm curious why you rejected the C-head?

We travel around for about 3 months in the winter. We are off grid the entire time. So it makes sense for us. It's a tough choice if you're just boondocking for shorter periods. Some just like the idea of a composting toilet though while others don't.

Yes. I plan to put in a urine diversion hose (into the black tank) of some sort. The deer and I are pretty familiar. We don't see the buck very often though. Every year we've get new spotted little ones and then we watch the grow up year after year.

Best to run the fan with anything inside. Moisture buildup can lead to mold.

I recently replaced my bath vanity in my condo and the drain pipes were 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" pipes (Murphy's law) so I slid the 1 1/4' pipe into the 1 1/2" pipe and packed some plumber's putty into the difference. I found Goop plumber's glue in a tube at the big box store and used that on top of the plumber's putty. That Goop plumber's glue dries clear and to a really smooth finish so it almost looks like it was made for repairs like this. My GF said that if I ever install a composting toilet in the trailer, she's not going on anymore trips............hmmmmm......................

You're right. I definitely cheated a little there using what I had on hand. Should have used ABS cement. Didn't want to buy a new can for 4 little vent connections. Luckily it was very snug without any cement and there's no pressure pulling it apart. Seems solid. It would be an easy redo if I start to smell something. I'll do better next time :)

I have long experience with composting toilets, going back to the 70's. Twenty years ago some people tried to introduce composting toilets to the leasure boat community. It didn't work because there are to many compromises involved in trying to make a small composter work. I'm not going to run through any of them here but I will be interested in how you feel about it in a year or eighteen months. That you do, do excellent work and it's only you and Melissa maybe all the compromises are manageable for you. I'll be interested to see. In reading other posts on the subject something I hadn't thought about came up. One of this posters motives for going with a composting toilet was the mess he seemed to often find at dump stations. Is that a problem? Having to deal with other people's mess' does indeed annoy me. And if that mess involves sewage, raw or other wise, we could reach critical mass really quickly. I invite comments. Your work is amazing and your installation is very informative. However, not sure I would want to swap my black tank for a composting toilet. I get the solid waste advantage, but emptying out the urine every couple days would be annoying I think. While boondocking I assume you can just throw it outside?

Yes. Scatter it around away from your campsite. It depends on where you are. You can also empty it into your grey or black tank or divert the urine directly into the black tank. I also have a second urine container.

Another project well done. I use the Fernco couplers on my black and gray tanks. You may run into an issue with them. They sell a torque wrench specifically for them. I didn't know this and couldn't figure out why the couplers kept coming loose. Then I found out about the torque wrench. It's a small T wrench that click stops at the correct setting. Haven't had one come lose since. Your use is in a vent so it may not matter unless it starts to smell in the RV. In my case, my black tank decided to drain itself at the wrong time and in the wrong place.

Hi Brian, great tutorial as usual. A couple of questions. Why didn't you unscrew the toilet flange? When I did mine I unscrewed the flange and put the plug in the pipe going to the black tank. In doing so all of that ended up below flush. And if I wanted to I could put in a urine diverter at a later date. Next question. Where the vent house connects to the Air Head I found that the connection was a rather poorly designed connection and it kept falling apart when I would empty the solids. Have you had an issue with that connection and if so what did you do to resolve the issue?

My flange wasn't so easy to remove. I think it's cemented all the way down to the tank. Plus it's nice being able to just lift off the toilet and dump something down the hole. I'll probably add a urine diverter as well. For now, I picked up a spare container. I glued the inside sleeve on the toilet vent connection pretty well and don't plan on unscrewing the hose much. I'll simply pull apart the fitting where the filter is instead. It'll just leave about 3 ft of hose attached which is still easy to take out side and clean.

What is your review of the system now that it's been a few months? We considered this exact same thing except for the powered venting. The only reason we did not do this was a concern of the rain water coming in through the 360° vent cap. We sealed our black tank toilet hole same as yours because I am DONE pumping that black tank crap out. We have a C-Head unit and love it but once in a while things just need to vent. So now that you have sealed the toilet hole and use a 360° vent with a fan do you have issues with rain water?

We love it. No more rolling sewer. No issues with rain water because it would just go into the black tank in our case. You're right, the C-Head doesn't have a vent, does it?

Nice job on the install. The only thing I don't like about composting toilets is men have to sit down to pee, but I suppose it eliminates that "accidental" overspray on the walls when it doesn't go where you think it will! Have you tied the gray and the black tanks together yet? I'm curious how you do that.

The fan is rated at 0.09 amps. It's purpose is to keep steady airflow through the toilet. Nature's Head and Air Head toilets are popular for boondocking. Both have an inline fan but many others don't.

Will constant fan running into vent tube shared with your black tank (new park of gray tank system) cause a slight positive pressure in the tanks which might result in odor issues especially if drain traps run dry?

I just have it positioned over the original flange. It's not screwed down and doesn't move around.

Nice adaptation on the pipe diameter issue. If you feel it’s been long enough, could you do a followup video on your thoughts since changing to a composting toilet? After watching this and others, I’m wondering if it’s the way to go myself, but the disposal of both the liquid and solids seems a bit intimidating to me... Especially the liquids. We can go about 7 days without dumping currently but I like the thought of 2 to 3 weeks as reported on several videos so I’m interested in your experience since making the change. High regards!!

We've really enjoyed it. It's been an adjustment, but a game changer for sure. The solids is pretty easy we just dispose of it and put new stuff in every 3 to 4 weeks. The fluids container gets emptied discretely every day.

@RVwithTito 👋🙂 I'm installing an Airhead in my trailer and am working on the venting. The instructions say to vent to the outside through a minimum 2.5" hole, which turns out to be the size of the fan in the housing. By tying in to the existing blacktank vent (which is apx 1.5" diameter), an airflow restriction is created. Have you (or anyone else who's done this) had any performance issues (smell, primarily) as a result? It looks like I'm awakening an old thread, so hopefully I'll hear some longterm results. Thanks so much. 🙂

No. we haven't had any issues. It is definitely better venting through the roof IMO. We now have it installed in our Class A and I got the In-Line fan that has a hose attachment on either end. I also found a better Y rubber fitting that fit my vertical tank pipe and hose perfectly. Much better than the setup in this video. No regrets. We love it. For 2 of us we can go about a month without changing out the compost. I dump the liquid tank everyday though.

Okay, I have been wondering whether you'd need a stronger fan when you're traveling. I thought I might install a second, stronger fan, in the same line, and only use it while the RV is underway. Someone reported that, because the inside air was lower pressure than the outside, while they were moving, the little fan wasn't enough to pull the fumes out, and they got pulled into the RV instead. Your vent hose is connected to the black tank stack. Although I don't know how you use the black tank (disposal of pee, etc), it could be unpleasant to have its gasses pulled into the RV, so the stronger fan would be to overcome that while the indoor pressure was down. I have no way of knowing whether this is really an issue or not. I just took note of it when I read that someone had had that trouble. I don't think I have ever seen anyone else say this was a problem, but backdrafts are a reality, so they're nothing to ignore.

There's a hole on the other side of the toilet with a little screen in it. You can choose either hole to mount the hose. There are also little vent holes in the bowl.

I would like an update in three to six months. I have heard this type of commode is hard to keep clean on the inside. as there is no water to clean the sides when things get wild. Oh lord what did I eat to cause all this?
