Compound Turbo DIESEL Rat Rod - Got Smoke? 

75% diesel straight out of exhaust in air. Wasted fuel.

Just ridiculous to blow so much smoke for that small amount of power.

If the owner could compensate for turbo lag and adjust tuning a little, maybe the gearing as well that thing could be a beast!

I keep hearing comments like "Too rich, turn up the boost" Its a mechanical. No "Tune". Its rich. The turbo's are huge, which makes them hard to light, and overfueling means it stays in the boost once it gets there. He needs nitrous and less fuel. Get them lit early and stay lit, but with a 4bt that's tough. PS it sounds amazing, I hope he keeps at it. Plus to all the haters, some of the best tuning starts with trying it out, and smart people do that at a track. Stop hating.

can someone explain me what's the point of this ? i mean, not even the engine sound is sexy... And shit they smoke so much they don't even see the green lights. Like at 2:35 x)

First few passes looked like a stem locomotive with all the smoke cool to see.

Why do people still think more smoke = more power? It'll run better and go faster set up right which on older diesels like these means a mist of smoke once it's on boost. Smoke like this just breaks stuff (high egt's) and wastes fuel that could be making power.

Yeah no worries, from the EPA: "Gasoline carbon content per gallon: 2,421 grams Diesel carbon content per gallon: 2,778 grams" But diesel engines generally get at least 20% better mpg than gasoline engines. Also because of the type of combustion process in general that diesel engines use, they require less of the crazy alkaline earth metals such as lithium. (if you consider that a benefit for the environment). For the smoke spewers though, not SO much, but same for gas. Racing is racing.

The smoke isnt as harmful as it appears. It doesnt linger in the atmosphere, it just settles to the ground after a few feet.

Oh, it doesn't, diesel is as diesel does, I wasn't saying that. I was just fighting the demonization of diesel. 'Racing is racing' as in, "Yeah, that thing's not good for the environment, but neither are a lot of cars at the track. You shouldn't judge diesels as a whole because of it though." As far as how rich, I honestly can't answer that with an intelligent response, so I won't. I'm sure it impacts it negatively, but a large portion of the diesel smoke is just carbon, not CO2. Which is fine.

Yeah, that was gonna be my question - it sounded like it didn't even spool properly until it had already been rolling for 2 or 3 seconds. That's surely not how it's supposed to work, especially with that chirp from the tyres halfway up the track. Seeing as his buddy in the ill-fated Ram had no trouble pre-boosting, what prevented this in the rat? 9.6 seconds isn't so hot over an eighth of a mile. Average closer to 45 than even 50mph. Still quicker than an econobox road car, but only barely.

Very interesting... wonder how these diesels DUMPING black smoke's fuel efficiencies factor into this... I don't know much about diesels, so I don't know how much 'richer' these diesels are running than a normal stock one (at the ~20% better mpg)

For all those Prius that have been sold, this definitely offset their carbon footprint.

So much wasted fuel and they aren't fast at all! If your smoking that much and it doesn't clear up under peak boost then your doing it way wrong. Omg I can turn up a pump but don't know how to upgrade anything else. These people make Cummins drivers look like douche bags.

might be the reason we have not adopted 3 cyl turbo cars that get 60 plus miles per gallon here in the USA too much like in europe but they also pay 7 dollars per gallon

That's as maybe... I drive a diesel myself, but I'm not going to go about pretending that carbon-soot nanoparticles are totally harmless. And a typical gas engine will style produce more power per litre and per unit weight of engine.
